EMI1.1
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
EMI2.1
Dans ces formules générales, F représente le reste d'un produit de condensation d'une anthraquinone, comprenant plus de trois cycles condensés, exempt de groupes acide sulfonique ou acide carboxylique, et qui peut porter encore d'autres substituants; R représente de l'hydrogène ou bien un substituant; R représente de l'hydrogène, ou bien un reste ali- phatique, araliphatique, isocyclique ou hétérocycli- que;

Ils conviennent remar-

"New coloring matter and process for their manufacture"
The Applicant has found that new valuable coloring materials are obtained by reacting condensation products of anthraquinone compounds, comprising at least three condensed rings, (free of sulfonic acid and carboxylic acid groups, and which contain at least one secondary or preferably primary amino group), with compounds represented by the formula:
EMI1.1
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
in the presence of halides of mineral or organic acids, forming colorants corresponding to the form
EMI2.1
In these general formulas, F represents the remainder of a condensation product of an anthraquinone, comprising more than three condensed rings, free of sulfonic acid or carboxylic acid groups, and which may have still other substituents; R represents hydrogen or a substituent; R represents hydrogen, or an aliphatic, araliphatic, isocyclic or heterocyclic residue;
R2 and R represent hydrogen or alternatively alkyl radicals which, optionally with inclusion of a hetercatome, can be combined together $ or alternatively R2 represents an aryl radical; n is an ontier number, preferably 1 to 4, and X is an enicn. In a preferred group of dyes (II), R and R1 represent hydrogen and R2 and R3 lower alkyl radicals.
For this reaction, one brings into play by definition dyes containing amino groups, which one obtains by condensation of anthraquinones, it then forms dyes having more than three condensed rings, and of which the anino group or groups are secondary or preferably primary.
The ring systems resulting from the condensation can be both carbocyclic and heterogeneous in nature.

For the reaction, it is generally necessary that there is at least one equivalent of component (I) and at least one equivalent of the organic or mineral acid halide per reactive amino group.
Depending on the number of secondary or preferably primary amino groups present in the dye molecule, and depending on the nature of the reaction conditions, one or more groups may be introduced into the dye having the formula:
EMI5.3
In this formula, R, R1, R2, R3 and X have the meaning given above. In the case of dyes with a fairly high molecular weight, it is often advantageous to introduce more than one group corresponding to formula (III), so as to increase the solubility of the compound in water.
The products corresponding to formula (II), which are formed during the reaction, separate from the organic medium in sparingly soluble or insoluble form and
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
therefore they can be isolated easily. After having separated them by filtration, they can be washed with organic agents, such as acetone, benzene, etc. The yields are very good.
The reaction of aromatic amines and dialkylamides of aliphatic or aromatic carboxylic acids is, for example, known from Belgian Patent No. 540,870 of August 29, 1955 and United States Patent No. 3,073,851 of 15 January 1963.
The nature of the anion X is irrelevant for the tinctorial properties of the dye. In the case of manufacture using thionyl halides or phosphorus halides, dyes are obtained which contain a halogen anion, hence Br-. This can, however, be replaced by other anions customary in dye salts, by converting the dye salt into the free base with the aid of a basic agent, such as sodium carbonate, sodium hydroxide, etc. and again passing this base in the form of a salt, with the aid of suitable organic or inorganic acids.
In this connection, it is possible to obtain dye salts, which contain as anions benzene sulonate, toluene sulphonate, nitrate, sulphate, phosphate, citrate, tartrate residues,
BF4 or succinate.
The products obtainable by the present process are new. They agree remar-

cotton, aromatic polyesters, such as polyethylene terephthalates, 2% acetates and triacetates, polypropylene fibers, acrylenitrile polymers and copolymers, polyvinyl chloride fibers, synthetic superpolyamides , synthetic superpolyurethanes, etc.
For this purpose, the dyes of the invention are used in the form of their alkaline solutions, preferably in an acidic or alkaline medium and at elevated temperature. The dyes obtained are distinguished by very good fastness properties.
