<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

On a égalem@@ @rouvé Que
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

The polycyclic dye derivatives of formula 1 can be obtained themselves by condensing the suitable compound of formula D- (Z), where Z is a chlorine or bromine atom, with an aniline-carboxylic acid or a mercaptobenzenecarboxylic acid. .
A further subject of the invention is another process for preparing the polycyclic dyes of the invention, according to which a metal salt, preferably an alkali metal salt, of a dye derivative of formula I is reacted with a. compound of formula RZ, where R and Z have the meanings given to them above.
The second process according to the invention is advantageously carried out by stirring the reactants, preferably at a temperature of 100 to 140 + C, in a solvent which is preferably constituted by an excess of the compound of formula RZ, advantageously in the presence of a basic catalyst such as diethylamine or piperidine. The ester thus formed can be isolated by conventional methods.
Particular examples of compounds of the formula R-Z are ethylene hydrochloride, ethylene bromhydrin, β- or Y-chloro- (or bromo-) propanol and - ('- chloroethoxy) eth®.
