<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

"Sofa convertible into a double bed **
The object of the invention consists in the production of a sofa bed, that is to say a sofa convertible into a bed and more particularly a sofa convertible into a double bed. The sofa bed according to the invention is very simple in construction, very robust and very comfortable. Its transformation from sofa to bed or vice versa, is accomplished without complicated maneuver as is the case.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
generally the case for sofa beds of this type.
The sofa which is the subject of the present invention consists substantially of a seat with two mattress cushions supported by a frame with two superposed frames and articulated together by a hinge allowing the opening of the frames in a manner comparable to that of the 'opening of a book, to place them on the same plane with respect to each other, at the same time as the cushions which constitute.' together kill a mattress for a double bed.
It is important to underline that the transformation and the positioning of the sofa bed for the double use. Are effected in a very simple way by the fact of the opening. or, by closing the frame and in a normal way by moving the superstructure, constituting the padding of the sofa, namely the elements forming the backrest, the armrests and the seat of the sofa.
This movement is easily performed and without any fatigue, given the lightness of the fillings and linings,
By opening the planes of the sofa, one of them and more precisely the lower frame is supported by the very legs of the sofa, while the top frame is placed on wedges which are arranged in the extension of the backrest uprights. , and possibly on the extension of the front uprights of the armrests.
The characteristics of the sofa bed according to the invention will appear during the description and in the drawings given by way of non-limiting example of one of the embodiments of the object of the invention.
On these drawings:
Figure 1 shows the couch. bed seen in perspective.
Figure 2 shows the sofa bed stripped of its fittings, also seen in perspective.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
FIG. 3 shows the sofa seen in elevation from its rear face.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the sofa, transformed into a bed.
Figure 5 is an elevational view of a side face of the couch according to Figure 1.
Figures 6, 7 show in elevation and in plan a constructive feature of the hinge which connects the two frames of the sofa.
The sofa convertible into a double bed according to the invention consists of an upper frame T and a lower frame T '. The upper frame T has an upper seat M and supports the armrests B and the backrests S.
The lower frame T 'has only a lower seat M'.
The seats, armrests and backrests are made from a soft and flexible material such as rubber foam or the like.
The upper frame T supports a tubular profiled element I, of preferably square section which extends over the entire length of the rear part of the upper frame, ie on the corresponding surface. in the case of the van. It is extended by two perpendicular side elements 101, and 201 constituting the armrests. At the front ends of the two sides 101 and 201 of the armrests, this tubular element 1 is bent at right angles towards the baa thus forming the upper uprights 2 and 102 which complete the structure of the armrests.
At the lower part, the T frame forms a rectangular structure to form the base of the upper seat M. This structure consists of a longitudinal element 3 and two sides 103, and 203 L profiles.
This L-shaped iron features a horizontally oriented wing.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
zontally in the base of the seat M and a wing facing downwards. The rectangle formed by the rear element 3 and by the two sides 103 and 203 is closed at its front part by the tubular element 303 'of preferably rectangular section' flat.
The angles of this upper frame T are reinforced by diagonal reinforcements 4-104-204-304 formed by flat bars.
At a certain distance from the ends of the backrest, the profiles 1, 3 are assembled together by the upper rods 8-108 of the rear uprights formed by tubular profile bars of square section, preferably identical to that of the profiles 1, 3 .
The lower frame T is constituted by a posterior element 5, by the two sides 105 and 205 of angular profile ,,,, L-shaped. A wing of this profile is oriented upwards. while the other wing is horizontal. At its front part, the rectangle thus formed is closed by the angular element 305 which is mounted with a wing 405 oriented downwards. Such a vertical wing 405 is suitably profiled at each of its ends which join the elements 105 and 205 implanted at right angles.
Perpendicular to the outer wall of side 5 of frame T 'and in alignment with the upper rods of uprights 8 and 108, m are fixed rods 7 and 107 with tubular profile ,. These rods reciprocally correspond to rods 8, and 108 in order to constitute a pair of posterior uprights.
The lower stems? and 107 of the posterior uprights are connected, at a certain distance from their upper end, to the downwardly oriented wing 405 of the angular element 305, by means of the cross members 9 and 109 suitably profiled.
Matching the ends of sides 105 and,
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
and 205 of the frame T 'are fixed los figea 6 and 106 of the two upper uprights, the latter correspond with the upper figea 2 and 102 of the previous uprights themselves * the sides 3 and 103 of the frame T of the 'upper support are connected to each other by pulls. elastic $ 10 that form. a flat and elastic support surface to support the cushioned seats M. Likewise the sides 5 and 305 of the lower support frame T 'are linked together by elastic tie rods 10 on which the cushioned seat M' is placed. .
These elastic tie rods 10 are agncs in procedures practiced on the side elements 3-303 and 5-305 of the frames T and T 'and more precisely, according to figures 6, 7, on flat bars $ 11, and 12 welded. have the longitudinal faces of the internal edges of said dimensions. '
The two frames T and T ', upper and interior, are articulated by hinges mounted on the pivots 15 and.
115 which pass through the atria 13, 14 and 113, 114 provided at the front ends of the sides 103, 105 and 203-205 of the two frames T, T '.
Figures 6 and 7 give the structural features of these hinges. At the anterior part, the vertical wing of the angular profile 205 ends beyond the lower upright 106 by an atrium 114 emerging upwards.The vertical wing corresponding to the angular profile 203 ends, after having passed the upper upright 102, by an overhanging atrium 115 symmetrical to the atrium 114.
To maintain the alignment between the two wing 203 and 205 and consequently between the two side elements of the frame, the wing of the element 203 is bent and profiled so as to align the atrium 113 exactly with the atrium 114 , despite the alignment between the two angular elements 203 and and 205 (Figure 7). The two atria are pierced by orifices through which passes a solid pivot 115 which comprises
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
pletes the hinge.
As clearly shown in Figure 6, the vertical wing of the angular profile 203 of the upper frame T has a height inside the corresponding wing of the angular profile 104 of the lower frame T ', so that when the frame upper is tilted around the hinges 1 $ and 115 its tubular profile 303 is superimposed on the horizontal flange 305 of the front frontal profile of the frame T '. This results in a significant reinforcement of the median longitudinal structure of the double bed.
To allow this partial superposition of the profiles 303 and 305, the upper uprights 2 and 102 and lower 6 and 106 are welded to the sides 103-105 and 203-205 in a position sufficiently far from the ear cups.
The lower ends of the uprights 7 and 107 of the lower frame T 'are provided with rollers R, R' in order to facilitate the movement of the couch. On the contrary, the lower ends of the uprights 6 and 106 are provided with gaskets or rubber soles for pressing on the ground.
The upper uprights 8 and .108 on the horizontal profile 1 are fitted with P rubber trims or heels to cut to the ground when the sofa is transformed into a bed.
The superimposed ends of the uprights 2, 6 and 7, 8 are also provided with rubber gaskets which constitute shock-resistant elements while providing spacing devices between the two upper and lower frames T and T ', when the bed is closed to be transformed into a sofa.
To transform the sofa into a double bed, the following operations must be carried out: -After removing the armrests B, the backrests S and the upper seat M, the upper frame T is tilted around
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
pivots 15.115, on the frame 'folded down T, the seat M is placed which together with the lower seat M' placed on the frame T 'constitutes the mattress of the double bed.
This bed rests on the castors R which correspond to the uprights 7-107 and on the rubber soles P provided at the upper part of the profile 1 forming a backrest in correspondence with the uprights 8. At its middle part the bed rests on the soles P provided at the base of the uprights 6. The uprights 6 must thus support all the median load, and in consideration of this, the superposition of the profiles 303-305 is provided as has already been specified above.
To transform the bed into a sofa, simply perform the reverse operations.
It should be noted that the weight of the person seated on the sofa, and therefore on the upper seat M, is supported at the front by the tubular profiled cross member 303 and, through the seat M ', by the angular profile 305 .
The flexibility and elasticity of the profile 303 and the rigidity of the profile 305 give this sofa great comfort, joint. great lightness and perfect safety.
CLAIMS l. Sofa convertible into a double bed, characterized in that the seat is made up of two superposed frames, articulated together, preferably in line with the front edge of the seat itself, so that the upper frame can fall back to a position occupying the same plane as the lower frame.
