<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>
<Desc/Clms Page number 13>
rouillage.
<Desc/Clms Page number 14>
<Desc/Clms Page number 15>
<Desc/Clms Page number 16>

To any mechanical device, problems have arisen in providing the device meeting a condition, capable of providing a sufficient control force to perform the necessary mechanical operations and, at the same time, involving a bulk and a weight maintained in Reasonable limits. This, and the problems associated with it, have led to the manufacture of devices, which are often complicated and expensive to manufacture.
The object of the present invention is therefore: - The improved construction of an automatic nozzle avoiding the difficulties indicated above, - an improved locking device, arranged to be triggered as a function of a determined condition, - a device locking device with greater sensitivity, economical manufacture, safe operation and more efficient operation than the locking devices heretofore used in this field, - an improved locking device which is more sensitive in its operation, with greater safety while avoiding excessive sensitivity that could produce accidental tripping for a slight difference in the operating condition,
- a combination of levers combined with the forces used, in order to ensure

more certain action of the device.
Other characteristics and advantages will appear to those skilled in the art with the desorption below, and the appended drawings in which: - Figure 1 is a cross section, with partial cutaway, showing a dispensing nozzle according to the invention, - figure 2 is a partial section on a larger scale, in the same plane as the section of figure 1, and showing the device satisfying a condition and the locking improved according to the invention, FIG. 3 is a perspective view, partially cut away, showing the diaphragm, the connecting assembly and the upper part of the plunger,
In the figures, the same references denoting the same elements and,
although the various characteristics of the invention are shown and described below as preferred embodiments, it should be understood that the latter are presented by way of example only and are not limiting, since many changes and modifications can be made without departing from the scope of the invention.
The dispensing nozzles of the type to which the present invention relates are provided with an automatic shut-off device, so that reservoirs or their receptacles can be filled to a predetermined level, and when oe

level is reached, there is an automatic interruption of the flow of liquid, no manual intervention being necessary. This general type of dispensing nozzle is described in US Pat. No. 2,582,195, January 8, 1952, and those skilled in the art will recognize that such nozzles have a lever-actuated main valve, biased for relief. be formed and fitted with a device for locking the operating lever in the open position.
Dispensing nozzles of this type are provided with a device satisfying a condition, which usually corresponds to a pressure variation from atmospheric pressure. This device is connected in a suitable manner to the operating lever, the connection being such that it releases a locking or locking system depending on the desired operating condition. The patent mentioned above discloses a means for producing a pressure below atmospheric pressure or the vacuum in the chamber of the device which satisfies a condition and which is evacuated during normal filling operations and subjected to pressure. this vacuum when a reservoir or other container has been filled to a predetermined level.
When this occurs, the device satisfying a condition operates to release the blocking or interlocking system, the main valve automatically closing under the influence of the thrust. The present invention is an improvement to structures of this general type.

distribution nozzles,
In the figures, a nozzle according to the present invention comprises a housing 1, generally fitted with an appropriate metal casting. An orouje part 2 extending towards the rear comes out both from a handle for handling the apparatus and also from a channel for the fluid to be dispensed, and an element comprising at its rear end the device 3 for connection with a flexible pipe bringing the liquid.
The hollow interior of the handle 2 communicates with another hollow portion 4 of the nozzle body only through an orifice * 5 in a partition or cleison. The main valve of the structure is placed in relation to this hole and it consists of a body 6 comprising a threaded upper extension 7. A roundolle of etanoheity 8 in a suitable elastic substance, resistant to the fluid to be distributed, is formed. located on the upper part of the body 6 and held in place by a washer aveo shoulder 9 screwed on the extension 7 of the body. A valve seat 10, cooperating with the sealing washer 8, is machined on the body of the molding 1.
The valve structure is pushed down by a compression spring 11 abutting the shoulder washer 9 at one end and a removable plug screwed into an opening in the housing.
In the particular embodiment, the Venturi device is placed on the shut-off valve. To this end, the body 6 having the form

of a truncated cone, ooopèru with a sleeve 13 inserted in the orifice 5. The sleeve has a certain number of orifices 14 close to the middle of its length and ooux-oi in turn ensure communication with an annular groove 15 established in the walls of the orifice 5. A channel 16 is drilled in the casing (Figures 1 and 2).
The valve body 6 is secured to a rod 17 which passes downwards through a stuffing box cap 1a of any suitable type, the end of the valve stem emerging from the bottom of the housing 1.
An operating lever 19 pivots at its front end on a pusher 21, the pivot being indicated by the reference 20. The intermediate part of the lever 19 is placed in a position allowing it to come into contact with the end of the rod. 17 to open the valve when the lever is raised to the position shown in broken lines in Figure 1. At the valve open position, the lever can be engaged in any of the notches shown by the locking element 22, pivoting on the eyes of part 2 of the housing. This element 22 is shown in the locking position, following the drawn lines ----------.
It is preferably urged by a spring, so that when the lever moves around the pivot point 20, as explained below, the element 22 is unlocked and escapes upward into the shaft. position partially shown in solid lines. A low res-

spell 23 can be engaged between the oartor and the. vier, if desired. It is common practice to provide the body 1 with a protection 1a for the lever 19, as shown in Figure 1.
When the nozzle valve opens, under the action of the lever, the fluid to be distributed flows from portion 2 to portion 4 of the housing, through the valve, between manohon 13 and the valve body 6. The conical shape of the valve body produces a Venturi effect tending to draw air through the openings 14 of the sleeve.
The configuration of the upper part of the housing has a diaphragm chamber 24 which ends in a cover 25. A flexible diaphragm 26 is engaged and clamped between the upper part of the housing and the cover 1 and 2, the cover. key being held in place by screws 27 or in any suitable manner. The marginal parts of the diaphragm 26 are perforated at 28 for the passage of the screw rods 27. It is also perforated at 29 which allows the channel 16 in the case of Stro connected to the channel 30 in the cover. 25, so that a vacuum can be created above the diaphragm in chamber 24.
The diaphragm is also perforated at its edges at 31 to allow communication between a further channel 32 formed in the cover 25 and a channel 33 in the body 1, to which a tubular member 34 is secured.

An exemplary embodiment is shown extending to the tank in a spout 35 removably secured to the body of the nozzle. The tube 34 terminates in a fitting 36 in the vicinity of the end of the flow boo, where there is a channel 37 through the flow spout and through the fitting 36, said channel opening out to the outlet. outdoors. As explained above, the air entering chamber 24 above diaphragm 26 removes the vacuum on the diaphragm until such time as channel 37 either closes or provides greater resistance to the diaphragm. the entry of the air, as it is known in the devices of kind.
As long as the canal remains open, the diaphragm is in a lower position (fig. 2). A coil spring 38, engaged between the inner face of the cover 25 and a Belluville-type washer 39 held on the upper face of the diaphragm, keeps the diaphragm in its lowest position.
In the preferred embodiment of the invontior, a stud device 40 is used against the diaphragm. At about the middle of its length, the stud carries a flange-shaped device 41, adapted to be placed under the diaphragm. The upper end of the stud is reduced and threaded on 42; and this part passes through a central perforation in the diaphragm and in the cup-shaped flange 39, the stud being held in place by a bolt 43.

Can be any suitable soft pad material but it is normally made of a gonro rubber substance or woolen cloth treated with oaoutchouo like oubotanoo so as to make it gas impermeable.
The lower end of the stud exhibited a washer-like flare 44, preferably having an inclined surface.
The pusher 21 is a generally cylindrical element, the lower end of which is reduced around the pivoting device 20. In general, the lever 19 is bifurcated at this point. The upper end of the pusher is somewhat open-ended so as to constitute a shoulder 45. A compression spring 46 is located around the body of the pusher, where it passes through a central hollow member 47 in the portion 4 of the molded body. The spring 46 is engaged between the shoulder 45 on the plunger and an element, opposed in the form of a shoulder 48, in the vicinity of the lower end of the perforation in the element 47. The spring, of course, tends to raise the pusher 21.
The upper end of the pusher is bifurcated at 49, and a small roller 50 is mounted so as to rotate on an axis 51 extending between the two portions of the bifurcation.
The pusher 21 and the diaphragm 26 are connected in a removable manner by a locking device which comprises levers pivoting on a base 52. The locking device will be better understood with reference to FIG.
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
base 52 has a set of holes 53 and it is fixed to the lower part of the chamber 24 by bolts 53a. The soolo 52 also has a central hole through which the upper end of the pusher 21 can move with the elements 54 and 55 facing upwards, disposed on its opposite sides to support between them a lever 56 pivoting around it. an axis 57.
Preferably, the upper ends of the elements 54 and 55 are provided with parts extending inwardly, mowing to maintain the lever 56 in a central position with respect to the axis of the pusher 21. The base 52 also comprises a second. pair of upward-facing elements 56 and 59 to support another lever 60 pivoting about an axis 61.
As can be seen more easily in FIG. 2, the lever 56 is a right angle lever comprising an arm 56a extending in a direction substantially perpendicular to the axis of the pusher 21 when the lever 56 is in the position. lock shown in Figure 2. For reasons which will become apparent soon, lever 56 also includes another arm 56b extending downwardly from pivot 57 and generally perpendicular to the arm 56a. The arm 56b has a notched portion 62 to receive the roller 50 carried by the pusher 21.
To ensure locking after a release and when the pusher 21 has returned to the position shown in Figure 2 and to prevent accidental release from excessive sensitivity and slight

variations in pressure during operation, the lever 56 is pushed in the counterclockwise direction by the spring 63.
The frictional forces are reduced, ... to a minimum, according to the invention, using the rolling movement rather than the sliding movement during locking and unlocking. weary. This is accomplished by aligning the pivots 51 and 57 and preferably, as shown in Figure 2, by substantially aligning them with the axis of the pusher 21. Using such an alignment of the pins and a roller 50, the locking or unlocking is effected using friction forces reduced to a minimum by the presence of the wall 62a tangent to the roller 50 at the intersection of a line joining the centers of the pivots 51 and 57 and which constituted the lower end of the notch 62.
If desired, the end 62b may extend slightly beyond and to the right of the point of tangency (figure 2) and may also be rounded.
As a result of the limitation of the size and to avoid the possible simultaneous action of the different elements during locking and unlocking, the depth of the notch 62 is practically equal to the radius of the roller 50. However, to take into account with variations resulting from manufacturing tolerances, trepidations causing operation, it may be advantageous to have one end 62b of wall 62a which extends slightly beyond the point of tangency to provide locking.

ot direct lage to avoid aooi-dontel unlocking.
The lever 56 can therefore rotate, clockwise, by an amount sufficient to release the roller 50 and the pusher 21 and, at the same time, it is not necessary that the central opening in the base 52 or the upper end of the pusher 21 is excessively large, to avoid the simultaneous mechanical action of the elements of the locking device.
In addition to its thrust action, noted above, the spring 38 also serves, in cooperation with other elements, to provide direct locking and to prevent the automatic release, when the diaphragm 26 is closed. found in the lowest position shown in figure 2. This is achieved by placing the underside of the oolleretto element 44 in the immediate vicinity of or in contact with a heel or cam 64 of the lever 56 As noted above, the spring 38 continuously exerts a strong push on the diaphragm 26 and on the element 44 in the lowest position (Figure 2).
This assembly provides an additional guarantee against accidental unlocking, because the clockwise rotation of lever 56 is prevented by the relative arrangement of element 44 and cam 64 and by the action of the spring 38 in all operating conditions, except when under the action of a vacuum the diaphragm 26 rises as well as the element 44 despite the action of the rassort 38, to effect a dever -

rusting.
The lever 60 has a downward angled end 60a, contaot with the arm 56a of the lever 56. The other arm 60b of the lovior bifurcates (Fig. 3), and can come into contact with the stud on the diaphragm. It should be noted, in Figures 1 and 2, that the bifurcation of the arm 60b is on either side of the reduced portion 40 between the washer-shaped elements 41 and 44, the latter forming move lever 60 clockwise (fig. 2). Those skilled in this field will appreciate, in the embodiment shown in Figure 2, that a considerable mechanical advantage is provided in the direction of movement of the release of the latch piece 62.
This is important, the triggering of the pusher being thus more sensitive and this sensitivity being even greater under the effect of a pressure variation on the upper face of the diaphragm.
During operation, an operator introduces the pouring spout 35 into the neck or the filling spout of a container to be filled and causes the start of the flow of liquid by lifting the lever 19 which opens the valve against the action. of the spring 11. The operator then locks the lever 19 in an open position by engaging its free end in a suitable notch of the latch 22. The flow of fluid through the Venturi device, in particular through the man- chon 13, tends to produce less pressure than the

atmospheric pressure, in the vicinity of the annular groove 15 which is in communication with the upper face of the diaphragm 26 via the orifices 14, the groove 15, the channels 16 and 30.
This tendency to produce a vacuum persists as long as liquid continues to flow through the Venturi device. However, until the reservoir or container in which the liquida is dispensed is completely filled so as to cover and form the channel 37, the tendency to produce a vacuum decreases as the upper part of the diaphragm 26 is extended. or connected to the atmosphere by means of the channels 32, 33, the sensing tube 34, the assembly 36 and the channel 37. Under these operating conditions, the tendency to produce vacuum cannot reduce the pressure on the valve. upper face of diaphragm 26 by an amount sufficient to overcome the downward biasing force exerted by spring 38.
As a result, the various elements will remain in the position shown in Figure 2, with the pusher 21 locked in such a position that the main valve will remain open and continue to deliver liquid. When the liquid in the reservoir or container reaches a level closing off the channel 37, the upper face of the diaphragm 26 is no longer vented and the vacuum producing tendency, noted previously, now reduces the pressure on the face. upper diaphragm 26.
When this occurs, the diaphragm 26 tends to move upward as a result of the decrease in speed.
<Desc / Clms Page number 15>
pressure in the upper part of the chamber
24. Obviously, the inclined washer-shaped portion 44 moves upward with the diaphragm 26, thus rotating the lever 60 clockwise around the axis.
61; and the latter, in turn, brings the arm 60a into contact with the arm 56a of the lever 56 forcing it to rotate clockwise around the axis 57 and thus release the pusher
21.
When the pusher 21 is released, it moves. generally downwards (figure 1) which automatically forms the main valve under the action of the thrust spring 11, even if the free end of the lever 19 remains in the unlocking position in a notch of the latch 22 .
Once the flow of liquid stops by closing the main valve under the action of the thrust spring 11, the operator will remove the nozzle, hence the spout 35 from the reservoir or container. thus reestablishing the venting of the upper part of the chaubre 24 again by means of the connecting channels 32, 33 of the detection tube 34, of the assembly 36 and of the channel 37. When this occurs, the vent 24 upper diaphragm 26 is again subjected to the. atmospheric pressure and the action of the spring 38 returns it to the position shown in Figure 2.
During this time, the thrust of the spring 46 caused the pusher 21 to return to its position shown in FIG. 2; as a result, the various elements are again in the locked position.
<Desc / Clms Page number 16>
and the nozzle is now ready for further dispensing. As noted above, locking is assured and accidental unlocking avoided by the action of spring 63 which urges lever 56 counterclockwise to the locked position.
In addition to this action, the spring 63 opposes any force intended to unlock the device; it thus tends to prevent accidental unlocking which may occur as a result of slight variations in the pressure in the upper part of the chamber 24.
It should be noted that the lever locking mechanism is an adjustment device that is easy to install and remove, that the pressure necessary to release the plunger is greatly reduced and that a construction has was planned, presenting in time the advantages of an economical manufacture. combined with a direct and safe operation.
Although a particular embodiment of the invention has been described and shown, it is obvious to those skilled in the art that many changes and modifications can be made to it without departing from the spirit and the understanding. framework of the invention.
