<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

Closing flange
This invention brings about improvements in closures for steel, light weight, and other metallic, or partially completely non-metallic, shipping packages, particularly for drums used in shipping various chemicals and other products *
Mainly due to the rapid increase in handling and labor costs,
the use of light drums made of metal or fiber genuinely responding to the definition of "packaging not taken back or lost" is becoming more widespread. It is obvious that drums intended for

proportion: Jubl.; t, according to the cost price of a finished drum, regardless of the material used in its construction, must be attributed to the format used for it. The cost price of the closures used above was out of proportion to that of these economical packaging.
A demand has therefore arisen for a closing device the manufacture and application of which are compatible, from a cost price point of view, with the barrel which it must equip.
EMI2.3
The invention responds to this demand by providing a plastic closure flange which, in addition to achieving the desired economy, can easily be inserted into the opening in the wall of a package, without the use of heavy tools.

and so as to ensure a structurally sound and watertight closure, Further, by selecting a suitable synthetic material for the manufacture of the flange,
this can withstand a wide range of chemicals and is

therefore particularly suitable for use in fQta which are either varnished or provided with a comparablo preformed plastic liner, to resist chemicals to the greatest extent. The closure as well as the drum are therefore suitable for shipping materials such as chemicals or various food materials,
where the contents of the package
EMI2.6
the stage must be insulated and prevent contact with the material constituting the wall of the latter *
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
It is therefore an object of this invention to provide an inexpensive closing flange which can advantageously. 6 'to use with the drums not taken again Another goal that to turn * nir such a bridle of reduced weight,.
Another object of the invention is to provide combinations of novel closure flanges for packaging walls.
A further object of the invention is to provide a lightweight, inexpensive closure flange which does not contaminate the contents of the shipping package to which it is applied and which cannot be contaminated by the contents thereof.
Another object is to provide a plastic closure flange which will elastically provide a tight seal around the opening in the wall of a package, with sufficient rotational resistance to meet acceptable standards.
A more precise aim of the invention is to provide a closing flange which can be easily inserted into the wall of a packaging provided with a liner or a coating without disturbing or damaging the latter.
Further and more detailed objects of the invention will become evident from the description of the invention made with reference to the accompanying drawings, or will be pointed out as this description continues.

The closure flange as embodied in this invention is generally designated 1 and shown in detail in Figures 1 and 2. It is contemplated that the flange or sleeve is constructed of a relatively resilient material.

lightweight, such as polyethylene. This is however given by way of example and should not be interpreted in a limiting sense. The main parts of the flange 1 are constituted by an essentially cylindrical neck 2, the inner surface of which is is provided with a net 3, a base 4 ties the force of a ring extending laterally outwards and a retaining lip or bead 5.
Referring to Figures 1 and 2, we can see that the base 4 has a cer-

In its uninserted position, the base 4 tilts upward, forming an angle with a horizontal plane passing through the lower surface of the flange, as seen in
EMI4.4
fig.2.Ca, .o-ai also allows to see that the upper surfaces 6a, 7a, ot 8a of the sealing fingers 6, 7 and 8 are parallel to the inclined base 4.
The exterior of neck 2 extending upward, 6 from base 4, is polygonal, The retaining lip $ extending to, Ltextbr, aur, from

of the upper end of neck 2, has a polygonal periphery corresponding to that of neck 2,
Fig. 2 clearly shows the alignment of the corners 12 and the closed flats 13 on the polygonal exterior of the neck. The underside of the retaining lip 5 forms a short horizontal rim 14, extending laterally towards the neck. Outside of coitus From the periphery of the rim 14, the upper surface of the lip extends as a convex portion 15 constituting the upper edge of the flange.
The head or other wall 20 of the package into which the flange is inserted may, in general, be of any shape best suited to the particular package of which it is to be part. neck bordering the opening of the wall of the container intended to receive the flange must have * no particular shape 'to reconcile the neck of the latter, while it must exist' dirty on the wall of the packaging, a flat surface, extending outwardly from the neck, for effective engagement with the base 4 of the flange.
Although the flange of the present invention, as shown herein, is intended to apply to thin steel drum heads, it is also intended to apply to steel packaging walls. other materials such as plastics, glass fibers and sheets of wood fibers, which are cited by way of non-limiting examples.
The wall 20 of the packaging, shown in the inverted position in FIG. 3, has a polygonal neck 21 formed outside this wall and bordering an opening therein. The neck 21 has corners 22 and flats 23, of which the formation corresponds to that of the corners and flats of the neck of the flange * The inner surface of the neck of the packaging may be provided with a coating or a layer of material 24 serving to
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
prevent contact of the contents of the container with the interior surface of the wall.
Coated cases or protective coatings * came into use in the drums industry for the shipment of chemical or food products where, thirst the wall of the packaging, or the contents thereof, could be contaminated one by one. 1 other.This layer can take the form of a liner formed beforehand of a suitable material, of which polyethylene is a non-limiting example,
or to be constituted by a coating applied to the material in touillas of which the drum is to be frbré It has become a rather general practice to insert the * closing flanges in the opening of the wall of the packaging after application of the varnish coating $ or prefabricated liner Accordingly, extreme care must be taken to ensure that the protective layer is not fractured or seriously shattered during the insertion of the flange, as this would obviously render the barrel unsuitable for the use for which it is intended.
The flange of the present invention is particularly suitable for the situation just described, because, as shown in Fig. 2, the flange can easily be inserted into the opening in the wall of the package with The retaining flange 5 acts as a pilot part, to initiate the passage of the flange in the opening, since its peripheral configuration conforms to that of the latter. In addition, the rounded surface 15 of the lifter 5 co-ordinates with the curved edge 25 surrounding the opening, to force the neck 2 to elastically contract, as indicated at 26 and likewise, to contract the retaining lip 5, the diameter of which is normally greater than that of opening 21,
to fit into it.
It can be seen that by applying pressure in the direction of the arrow in fig. 3, we can let the
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
flange in the position shown in Fig. 4, where the flange 14 of the retaining lip 5 passes elastically over the leading edge 27 of the opening 21. This view also clearly shows the extension 29 of a liner. prefabricated would be securely clamped between the flange 14 of the retaining lip 5 and the leading edge 27 of the opening 21, so as to eliminate any possibility of tearing it from the flange.
However, since the strap is made of an elastic plastic material, it will give way before the lining supported by metal or another rigid material and will therefore not damage the latter,
In the case of a coating applied by projection, the retaining lip 5 N'would introduce directly over the. edge 27. this would be true whether the projection is taxed before or after the insertion of the flange.
Fig. 4 shows how the inclined base 4 is elastically pressed after insertion, to lay flat in a horizontal plane, allowing the upper surfaces 6a, 7a and 8a of the fingers 6,7 and 8 to grip the surface adjacent flat wall of the package.These three fingers act as a seal, to effectively prevent any leakage between the package wall and the flange.Likewise, the tendency of the base 4 to return to its natural tilted position exerts a strong clamping action on the parts of the opening 21 located between the base and the retaining lip
This arrangement not only ensures a permanent, leak-proof seal, but also has excellent rotational resistance.
due to the corresponding polygonal surfaces of the neck of the flange and the opening, which are in engagement with each other by the insertion of the flange.
When the closure is complete, as shown in fig. S
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
shows the head 20 of the packaging inverted, in its upright position, with a closing cap 30 screwed into the flange, A hermetic cover 31 is shown, crimped in place over the assembly. This hermetic cap provides additional insurance against leaks and effectively prevents tampering with the closure. It can also be seen here that due to the inclination of the fingers 6,7 and 0 'away from the longitudinal axis of the flange, there is a tendency to the part of these fingers, in the event of a loosening of the selul flange, e to press the lower part 28 of the neck thereof laterally inward.
However, when a closing plug is screwed into the flange, this part 28 will be forced laterally outwards, bringing it to new. calf fingers sealed to improve their pressure on the wall of the package. It will also be noted here that the curved surface 15 of the retaining lip 5 acts as a seal seat, cooperating with the part 32 of the stopper 30, constituting the clean gasket of the latter, in order to achieve a tight seal with the latter. The airtight cover 31 serves to further compress the seal portion 32; around the river 5.
It should be understood that as certain changes may be appropriate to the construction set forth herein and as the invention may be made in various shapes and with different materials without departing from the scope of the invention, it is desired that all that is contained in the description above or illustrated in the appended drawing is interpreted in an illustrative and non-limiting sense.
