<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

* Improvements made to convection heaters ".
The present invention relates to oonveotion heating apparatuses, of the kind of apparatus comprising an upright casing providing passage to a current of air which flows through an inlet opening located at or near the base. from the envelope and which exits through openings located at the front of the envelope or near said top,
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
a substantially horizontal tubular heating element both disposed in the casing for transmitting heat to the air which is caused by the heating element to rise in the casing during operation of the heater
The heating element of such a heating device can be heated by the value of water, by hot water or by another fluid, or even by an electrical resistance member, arranged in its tubular part.
According to accepted practice, the casing of a heating appliance of the aforesaid kind is made in two parts, a part comprising a rear, a top and sides, which part after the heating element was fixed in position, is mounted on the heating element, the other party. ; consisting of a detachable front panel which is positioned on the first part after mounting the first part.
This practice is unsatisfactory, because when mounting the casing over the element, or when fitting the flow and return connections to the element, you can damage the latter, and also because that in order to minimize the risk of such damage, an appreciable transverse clearance is usually left between the heater element and the rear and front panels of the casing.
This clearance results in a poor efficiency of heat transfer to the air entering the casing and, consequently, a comparatively poor efficiency of the heater. The ! Received practice is also unsatisfactory in that the envelopes for wall or floor mounted heaters are not interchangeable.
In a convection heater of the foregoing species, in accordance with the present invention, the casing comprises a central section having a bushing and spaced upright front and rear walls between which and at the base thereof. - the or in the vicinity of the base of which the element extends

heating element, and two end sections, each of which are arranged for easily removable mounting on one end of the central section, so as to cover at least the end of the part of the central section in which the element extends. heating and so as to constitute an upright end wall of the passage delimited by the casing.
It is evident that when the heating element is mounted in the central section, the risk of damage to this heating element during installation is reduced to a minimum and, therefore, there is no need to provide any clearance. appreciable between the heating element and the rear and front walls of the enclosure. Likewise, it is evident that the end sections of the heater casing can be provided in two shapes which are suitable respectively for wall mounted and floor mounted heaters. described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is an isometric view of a heater having end sections suitable for a floor mounted heater, one of the end sections being shown in disassembled condition.
Figure 2 is a sectional front elevation of a heater having end sections suitable for a wall mounted heater.
Figure 3 is a side elevation in section, taken on line III-III in Figure 2. @
The envelope shown in Figure 1 and that shown in Figure 2 each comprise a constructed central section 10 having respectively front and rear upright walls 11, 12 and a substantially horizontal top 13.
Along the side edges of the center section of the casing there are inwardly projecting flanges 14 extending perpendicular to said edges and each having a
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
portion 15 of reduced width, located in its lower region * The front and rear walls of the middle section of the casing are connected and spaced by a pair of top plates 16 and a pair of bottom plates 17, the upper and lower plates being attached to opposing flanges at each end of the center section.
These spacer plates each have (in order to form a means for mounting and locating a terminal section of the casing on the central section, as will be described) a flange 18, inclined upwardly. and outwardly along the top edge of each spacer plate, and flanges 19 along the rear and front riser edges of. so-called spacer plates, flanges which project parallel to the rear and the front of the front section of the casing, respectively. near the top of the front panel There is a group of horizontally elongated openings, constituting the means of exiting the heated air stream from the casing. The group of openings can alternatively be located in the top panel 13.
To regulate the flow of air through the casing, a damper in the form of a rectangular plate 21, having substantially the length of the central section of the casing, and having par- Parallel inclined longitudinal edge ties, directed in the plate 21 being in opposite directions, 22, / able to pivot about a central horizontal axis in order to allow to modify the section which the envelope offers to the air current which therein past. To allow the damper to pivot, a linkage is connected to it which includes a handle 24, which projects through a vertical slot 25 in the front wall of the casing.
The heating element of the present embodiment comprises three parallel tubular conduits 26, having the same length as the central section of the casing and intended for
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
born with heating fluid. The opposite ends of the conduits 26 Do not open in the upper part of respective inlet and outlet distributors or manifolds 27, 28, the width of which is rather less than the width of the casing, the outlet manifold 28 being disposed at a slightly higher level than the inlet manifold 27.
Rectangular fins * 29, having almost the same width as the casing, are aligned symmetrically around the pipes and are spaced in the row at equal intervals small enough to ensure that the air passing between the fins comes into intimate contact. with the fins. The fins should be spaced slightly apart from the rear wall 12 to prevent conduction heat transfer thereto, and preferably they contact the front wall 11 to allow heat to be transmitted therein by conduction, thus so that the heat can radiate from the front wall.
In the top of the outlet manifold is a vent or trap 30, which vents the air which separates from the heating fluid in the lines. In the lower part of each collector there is a passage 31, opening laterally outwards, and a passage 32, opening vertically downwards, one of which is blocked in service, while the the other receives the heating fluid flow or return pipe.
FIG. 1 shows an envelope whose passages 31 are blocked and whose passages 32 are connected to pipes, while FIGS. 2 and 3 represent an envelope whose passages 32 are blocked and whose passages 31 are connected to pipes. pipes.
An upright plate 33, integral with the top of each manifold, is disposed around the conduits 26 between the internal faces of the manifolds and the first and last fin 29a of the row, respectively. To fix the element
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
In the central section 10 of the casing, the upright plates 33 are arranged inside the casing so that they press against the base of the inner faces of its flanges 14 just at the base. above the portion 15 of reduced width of the flanges. The faceplates are bolted to the flanges.
The finned conduits are then arranged in the central section of the casing, near its base, whereby each manifold has an internal face housed between the reduced parts of the flanges and protrudes laterally with respect to the central section in such a way. that the lower part of each manifold protrudes below the central section.
The end walls of the air passage formed by the casing are in the form of end casing sections.
When the heater is to be mounted on the floor, as shown in Figure 1, the end sections 34 are preferably of such a height as to constitute the feet of the heater, which feet also serve. to hide the lower part of the manifold 27 and 28 and the fluid pipes which extend downwards.
When the heater is to be mounted on the wall, as shown in Figures 2 and 3, the end sections 35 have advantageously the same height as the central section 10, so as to leave visible the lower part of the legs. manifolds 27, 28 and the fluid pipes which connect thereto laterally. These end sections 34 and 35 are respectively press-formed from sheet metal and include an end panel 36 and respective top, front and rear portions, 37, 38 and 39 which, when the terminal section is mounted on the central section, are respectively coextensive with the top, front and rear of the central section of the casing.
In the rear parts of each end section there is a notch 40, or
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
silence an ear 41, carried by the action, central 10, tightening to mount the envelope on a wall.
Each of the end sections is provided with vertically spaced horizontal plates 42 which are attached to the end panel of the respective end sections and which have, along the far edge of the end panel, flanges 43, projecting forward and downward, complementing the end panel. - Silences of the upwardly inclined flanges, 18, carried by the spacer plates 16, 17 of the central section.
During the installation of the convection heaters described, the central part of the casing, carrying the heating element, is fixed by bolts which pass through the retaining lugs 41, to a wall, with a clearance between the base of the envelope and the floor sufficient to allow the free passage of air towards the base of the envelope. This distance is at least equal to the front-to-rear width of the envelope. The collectors 2 ?, 28 are then connected to the heating fluid outlet and return pipes, pipes which are connected to the passages opening laterally 31 or to the passages opening downwards 32.
The end sections 34 or 35 are then arranged over the open ends of the central section by sliding the downwardly projecting flanges, 43, of the end sections, over the upward sloping flanges, 18 , of the central section.
The flanges 19 carried by the front and rear edges of the center section spacer plates then engage the inner faces of the rear 39 and front 38 of each end section and the part lower end section conceals at least the upper part of the manifold.
End sections 34 can be fitted to a heater having side connections to the fluid pipes by forming appropriate slots in the
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
terminal sections, all of which extend upward from their lower edges.
One of the methods of fixing the central part of the casing carrying the heating element to the nur, which constitutes a variant which replaces the use of ears 41, consists in using support brackets which are fixed. xed to the wall before the heater is installed and that extend outward and upward at an angle from the wall. In this way, so that the central part of the casing can be adjusted to the support brackets, its rear wall has an inwardly sloping top part, which is welded to the top of the casing, while the top of the casing The casing has a downward strap which extends along its rear edge.
The drop-down flange snaps over the support bracket, keeping the central part of the envelope in place against the wall.
It should be noted that the risk of damage to the fins during installation of the described heater is less than for an ordinary heater, and also that the described heater heats the heater more efficiently. air drawn into it, as the fins extend across the entire front-to-rear width of the casing.
It should also be observed that the central part of the casing containing the heating element can be used for mounting on the wall or on the floor and that, everything. at most, the terminal sections can be usefully said-. different, depending on how the heater is mounted,
In addition, the end sections can be removed to allow dusting of the heating elements. without risking damage to the heating element when replacing the end sections.
