<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
EMI4.1
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

"Oxygen blowing process pouf converter *.
The present invention relates to a converter of the type employed for the manufacture of steel followed by the oxygen blowing process.
The use of this kind of converter, in particular in the processes where one treats the crude iron rich in phosphorus and where, in addition to oxygen, one uses lime in the form of dust or in classified pieces , has shown that, already after a certain number of different fusions depending on the particular nature of the blowing process and between values ranging from 90 to 160, the stability of the converter was compromised.
As a result of very hot waste gases, containing metal oxides and forming during the process (principa.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
(also due to the presence of iron and manganese), the converter cap is attacked in the first place and destroyed prematurely.
Tests are being developed to increase the life of the bonnet by employing a thicker packing and adding more martensitic dolomite. The results must first demonstrate to what extent the durability can be improved in this way. Until now, the wear plates provided at the mouth of the converter have not yet given satisfactory results,
Therefore, the problem is to find a solution for the metallic vapors and the hot waste gases, which contain metallic oxides, are formed in particular as a result of the phosphorus content and which, due to their speed increased by the throttling at the output of the converter, are particularly aggressive for the coating, and this,
in a way other than that consisting in improving the refractory lining used heretofore for the converter cap, with a view to increasing durability.
According to the present invention, a solution is proposed, the characteristic of which consists in that the converter has an intermediate piece penetrating inside. Thanks to this intermediate piece penetrating inside, the waste gases are not only directed mainly in a determined direction but, just like in a chimney, the draft already existing above the converter is further reinforced, so that, even with a constant internal diameter along the entire length of the spacer, the waste gases are discharged with acceleration.
The intermediate piece is advantageously produced.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
born in a * mobile and interchangeable way; especially since it must also be removed with the lance before ',' 1 overturning the converter.
In some cases, it would even be sufficient to place the spacer in the form of lost body before the; start of blowing. In this case, the insert would only be used for the main blowing time. The destruction of the part must then be taken into account when the converter is tilted for the first time. The hot and noxious waste gases and vapors then only act on the bonnet during the short period of subsequent blowing.
Like the lining, the material provided for this spacer, resting on the edge of the converter, must be made of a refractory mass. A spacer made with this material will be burnt at most after a few fusions to the point of having to be * replaced. However, the costs necessary for this effect are extremely low so that, compared with known systems, a technical progress which can be described as significant is already being achieved.
For parts with a longer service life, the material is
Cooled metal, that is to say that the cooling agents pass through the metal insert, for example in perforations, the cooling being able in particular to be carried out with water. In addition, a combination of a cooled metal with a refractory material can be envisioned.
In order to be able to use the cooling on the one hand for the insert itself, but on the other hand also for the residual gases flowing over the inner wall of the cap, cooling gases are used as refrigerant. flowing inside between the
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
spacer and the converter wall. For this purpose, on its base resting on the edge of the converter, the spacer has cutouts, through which the separated cooling gases are pressed into the interior of the converter and flow near the casing. of the spacer. It seems advantageous to use, as cooling gas, gases which decompose at high temperatures, such as for example CO2.
Superheated steam can also be used. The temperature of the waste gases is around 1500 - 1700 ° C, while directly at the mouth of the converter values of 2000 ° C have been measured.
These cooling gases are entrained by the evacuated residual gases, they pass into the inner edge of the insert and are again evacuated through the free cross section thereof. Likewise, we can do
EMI4.1
pass the% to the do r-tr. '. "t" .., 4 ...- ¯t..a.t8ft * .... ticked in the insert and open on both sides.
To give the waste gases a greater exit speed, the inner wall of the intermediate piece can be made in the form of a nozzle.
In addition to pure cooling, by the introduction of cooling gases, the concentration of hot vapors of metals and metal oxides is further reduced which mainly cause untimely premature wear.
Thanks to this insert according to the present invention, almost the entire quantity of the residual gases with their vapors of metals and metal oxides attacking and destroying the gasket is discharged directly from the converter, so that inside of the last, @
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
there remains only a small part coming into contact with the interior surface of the cap.
When employing a spacer with cutouts at the support base, these actual amounts are entrained by the cooling gases flowing in and along the outer shell of the housing. the intermediate piece and they are evacuated by it with the other waste gases. This maintains low temperatures on the converter bonnet packing. In addition, thanks to the low flow velocities existing in the corners, the small particles of metal oxides and slag, subsequently flowing in the corners located between the insert and the converter, are slowed down. and their kinetic energy is reduced.
In this way, the formation of pocket bottoms in the area of the corners is also reduced.
The appended drawing shows schematically an exemplary embodiment according to the present invention and. in particular a longitudinal section of a converter with a symmetrical cap as well as of an intermediate piece penetrating into the converter.
In a converter 1, penetrates a lance 2 ending at a certain distance above the bath 3.
This lance is partially surrounded by an intermediate piece 4, provided for the evacuation of residual gases.
This intermediate piece 4 rests on the mouth of the converter.
In order to withdraw and introduce the insert, electrical, mechanical or devices actuated by a pressure agent can be provided, these devices guiding the insert independently of the movement of the lance. However, the structure of this
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
device does not directly constitute an object of the present invention; therefore, it does not appear in the drawing.
