<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

.Cable constructions and armored rubber products incorporating such cables ".
The present invention relates to cable constructions comprising a number of multiple wire strands, helically wound, characterized in that certain each of the strands is composed of a / number of wire strands * which are free of tension. this move relative to each other so as to also take up a load applied in traction on the strands.
More particularly, the construction of
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
targets according to the present invention have a special utility when these cables are embedded * in a rubber body bridge arming the latter with a view to loads applied to the rubber body and acting in traction with respect to the to- rons
The manufacture of helically wound wire strands * and the function of a cable by the helical winding of tele strands are obviously known.
However, prior to the present invention, it has not been discovered that extremely useful characteristics for reinforced rubber products can be obtained by virtue of metallic cords in which the various strands composing the cable are composed of wires. metallic in a number such that they do not form geometric configurations .tables. For example, strands composed of one, two, three or seven strands of uniform diameter give stable and regular geometric configurations and the individual strands xx cannot, when applying a load in traction, be move relative to each other and therefore cannot take up the same load.
When these targets are embedded in a rubber body, they cannot take up the same load applied to the rubber body and acting in tension with regard to the various strands of the cable. On the other hand, and according to the present invention, cable constructions are provided in which the various strands are made up of, for example, five, six or eight metal wires of uniform diameter, so that the files are free to move relative to each other and, therefore; all the wires are used to share a tensile load-on, applied to the cables.
Importantly, when the cables of constructions of the last mentioned kind are embedded in a rubber body, the reinforcement of the rubber body is greatly reinforced because the
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
various wires of the various strands of the cables also reinforce the rubber body with regard to the annatto applied to the body, rubber and acting in traction vis-à-vis the embedded cables.
Due to the irregular geometric configuration formed by the wires of the strands of the cables according to the present invention, a considerably improved penetration of the rubber of the rubber body in which the cable is embedded is obtained, so that a product is obtained. of rubber reinforced with wire rope, considerably improved.
The present invention, in addition to providing improved reinforced rubber products, gives the **? If this results in a saving, For example, it has been found that in a typical construction of 4 x 5 cable, i.e. cable having four helically twisted strands each having five helically twisted wires, i.e. one total of 20 wires, each strand has a tensile strength equivalent to that of a cable
7 x 3, that is to say a cable of seven strands of three wires each, making a total of 21 wires. In the example given, we therefore obtain equivalent results with one thread less.
Another example of the economics resulting from the fact that resistance is obtained substantially; equivalent with fewer wires, is that, of a cable according to the present invention, of 7 x 5, that is to say having seven strands of five wires each, that is to say in total
35 wires, which is equivalent, as far as the resistance is concerned, to an ordinary 5 x 7 cable twisted through a 3 x 1 strand, and thus counting in total 38 fila.
Figure 1 is a cross section of a 4 x 5 cable according to the present invention.
Figure 1A is a cross section of a rubber product comprising the cable of Figure 1. Figure 2 is a cross section of a 7 x 5 cable according to the present invention.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The fiber 2A is a cross section of a rubber product comprising the cable of figure 2. In figure 1, the cable 3 is composed of four strands wound * in a helix, 4, 5, 6 and 7, each of which is formed of five metallic wires wound in a helix, w ie the same diameter. The general peripheral contour of each of the strands 4, 5, 6 and 7 this shown in dotted lines. The cable 3 thus formed can, as shown in FIG. 1A, be embedded in a rubber body 8 to constitute a reinforced or reinforced rubber product with regard to the forces acting in traction in the cable.
It should be noted that the fila., Observed in cross section * !, of each of the toroas, form a non-uniform geometrical configuration, as a result of which a tensile load acting to a greater extent on any of the individual threads of the strand, causes the spontaneous rearrangement of the wires of the strand so that the various wires share the load equally and therefore give rise to an optimum reinforcement or reinforcement of the rubber body 8.
Figure 2, we see another! typical cable construction according to the present invention. In this embodiment, a 7 x 5 cable, indicated at 10, comprises seven strands 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19 and 20, wound in a helix with respect to each other to form the cable, each pole comprising, 'as - above five metal wires W. wound in a helix. The general peripheral outline of the individual strands are generally indicated in dotted lines.
It should be observed that the various strands of the various strands always form non-uniform geometric configurations, although the individual strands of each of the strands may move here relative to each other.
As shown in fibure 2A, the cable of FIG. 2 can be embedded in a body of caouvtconus 21, with no load applied to the rubber product and acting in tension.
