<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

"Artificial island and method for its erection".
It is known, in coastal regions and in shallow waters, to establish artificial islands, in order to carry out soundings from them, for example. It was then common previously to work with foundations on piles.
If, however, these are waters in which one has to rely on high lateral forces due to wind and waves, and possibly also ice, such constructions on piles are very complex and expensive.
One could also consider establishing such islands using concrete floating bodies. The possibility of using this process would, however, be very limited. The difficulties then lie above all in
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
the fact that no sufficiently large dock is available; r the establishment of floating bodies.
The object of the invention is a method for the establishment of an artificial island in which the novelty lies in that one first establishes an annular and floatable erous body, which can for example be made. in steel. Such a steel body can be constructed relatively simply in sections in a dry dock. The individual sections can then be laid on the water by means of a floating crane and be assembled. The finished steel body is floated to the site, according to the invention, using a lifting beam. On the cnantier, after lowering the uprights of the lifting boom, the steel body is raised from it and in particular it is placed on the bottom by ballasting.
If a fixing against tilting and sliding is still necessary, this can be done mainly by driving pilings, which can be driven into vertical free spaces of the steel body. The hollow body can then be guided on these piles during its subsequent lowering, until the lifting island can finally be removed by floating,.
Subsequent lowering is done by pushing the steel body into the bottom. Finally, it is scoured with sand. When this is done, additional anchoring stakes or pilings are driven through other vertical passages. Subsequently, individual free spaces or the various spaces of the annular steel body are usefully successively pumped out and filled with concrete. The hollow body therefore simultaneously constitutes a permanent steel formwork. The base inside the steel body can finally still be fixed by underwater concreting. In addition, it might be advisable to agglomerate outside of the steel corrs, to avoid / rip-rap / embossments, / etc.
After this preparatory work, we can finally float a platform to
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
usefully dug also made of steel, which is again done using a lifting pole. The island platform is then supported on the firmly anchored hollow steel body and connected to it.
The finished island is in any case firmly supported and anchored to the load-bearing bottom. It consists of the annular wall, which is covered above by a platform placed more or less high above the water level.
Inside this fle is therefore a chamber closed on all sides. According to another characteristic of the invention, this chamber will serve for the storage of oil. It is then only necessary to provide a further pipe which opens out inside the annular carrier body, in the vicinity of the base, and the second end of which is below the water level on the outside. .
When filling the oil in the tank, the water previously filling the tank can be expelled through this line, because the oil due to its low specific weight always floats on the water. Due to the difference between the specific weights of oil and water, the level of the oil inside the tank is always a set distance higher than the level of the water outside. from the island. From the height difference it can be determined how high the oil column inside the tank is. If we take oil, water re-penetrates; from the outside and by the same pipe, inside the tank.
A measuring device, which usefully measures the water level outside the tank with a float and the oil level inside the tank with a second float, can coo- test with a scale which indicates at will and possibly also records the height of the oil column or the quantity of oil in reserve.
The essential advantage obtained according to the invention is that, thanks to the use of a lifting beam, very large loads can be moved relatively easily and
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
simply and without major preparatory work. It is also here that no auxiliary device should remain in the water for a long time. The only auxiliary device is the lifting boom itself, which only stays in place for a few days and can then be removed by floating immediately afterwards, being available for other work. No auxiliary frame, no temporary pilings, etc. remains in the water, which could later lead to disturbances or accidents.
The piles or pilings which are beaten to maintain the artificial leaf, are afterwards part of the island itself.
Other details and features of the invention will emerge from the description below, given by way of nonlimiting example and with reference to the appended drawings, which schematically represent in five figures the different stages of establishment. of the island, as well as the latter ready for use.
According to the invention, the individual sections of the annular hollow body 10, made of steel, are first laid out of the water and on a dry dock, these parts then being placed in the water using of a floating crane and assembled. The finished hollow body 10 is then anchored to a lifting device 11, which, in the exemplary embodiment described, has a U-shaped platform. The steel body 10 hangs in ropes 12. Some cells of the hollow steel body 10 may, in order to influence the depth of immersion, be filled with sand or some other ballast. The steel body 10, the basic shape of which need not necessarily, as shown in Figure 1, be a circular ring, is then floated with the lifting blade 11 to the place of erection.
At this point, as shown in figure 2, the uprights 13 of the lifting boom are first lowered, until they are firmly seated on the solid bottom 14.
Then the steel body 10 is erected. When this has been done, the steel body 10 is driven deeper by releasing the ropes 12 and adding ballast, until it rests.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
lement on the solid bottom 14, as shown in FIG. 3. Next, in vertical passages 15 distributed over the entire annular periphery of the steel body, piles or pilings 16 are beaten in three places, which are firmly anchored in the bottom 14.
After this, the steel body 10, which can then be gaided on the piles 16 already beaten, so that a tilting should no longer be feared, can be lowered even more strongly, in order to obtain as much as possible on any the periphery a close connection to the load-bearing layer 14. This additional depression can be helped by scouring the steel body 10. Possibly, and depending on the nature of the ground, we can also proceed to explosions. If the steel body 10 ultimately rests firmly, as desired, on the solid bottom, additional pilings 16 are driven through the other passages 15.
The number of piles or pilings can be chosen at will.
When the desired anchorage is obtained, the various free vertical spaces 15 of the steel body are usefully filled with concrete. Thus, a concrete island is simultaneously erected, the annular steel body 10 then serving as a durable formwork. At this time, the uprights 13 of the lifting island 11 can be raised and the lifting island itself can be floated out.
From the same lifting platform 11 can finally be suspended a platform 17, which in turn can be made of a hollow steel body and which is to constitute the final platform of the artificial island. With the aid of the lifting island 10, the platform 17 is floated. On the construction site, it is then placed on the already anchored steel body 10 and / is connected thereto. The lifting island 11 can then again be floated away and be prepared for another use.
Then, inside the steel body, the base can be fixed by applying a layer of concrete 18 and any scour in the vicinity of the artificial island can be protected by riprap 19 or another. way, after which the island is
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
ready to use.
Inside the artificial island 10, 17, there is a more or less large free space, which will normally be filled with water, since it is not absolutely watertight isolated from the water. surrounding water 20. This does not result in inconvenience. In any case, the free space inside the artificial island 10,17 can be filled with oil. This is especially important when using the artificial bulb as a drilling island.
The extracted oil can then be stored inside the island. Since the specific gravity of the oil is lower than that of the surrounding water, an oil level 22 will be established inside the island which is slightly higher than the water level. 23 outside the island.
The difference between the two liquid levels 22 and 23 is the greater the more oil 21 is accumulated and therefore the level 24 of the water 25 will be lowered more deeply. Sé in the lower part of the tank. In order to facilitate the outflow of the water 25 to the outside, according to the invention, a pipe 26 is provided, one end 27 of which opens out in the vicinity of the base 18 of the tank, while the other end 2b is located below the water level 23 outside the steel body 10. By virtue of this tubing or pipe 26, water can enter and exit without hindrance.
On the other hand, an outlet of the oil 21 is not to be feared, as long as the latter does not fill the free space inside the island up to the free end 27 of the pipe.
