<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

The present invention relates to novel quaternary ammonium compounds and to methods for preparing them,
Main Patent No. 560,506 relates to quaternary ammonium salts of fatty acid esters and N: N: N ': N'-tetrakis (2-hydroxyethyl) ethylenediamine which are particularly useful for the treatment of materials. textiles, for example to improve flexibility and antistatic properties, and also as lubricating agents.
It has now been found that certain quaternary ammonium salts of fatty acid esters and other polyhydroxypolyamines are particularly useful as textile treatment agents.
However, the present invention brings to the main patent the improvement or the modification comprising new ammonium compounds.

These new quaternary ammonium salts can be advantageously obtained from polyamines of formula
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
NH2 (ANH) p ANH1 where A and p have the meaning given to them above, by reacting the polyamines with alkylene oxides or mixtures of alkylene oxides, forming with the hydroxyalkylpolyamines thus obtained the fatty acid esters, and then quaternizing the fatty acid esters.
As polyamines which can be used, mention will be made of ethylenediamine,
EMI2.1
Isopropylenecliamine, hexamethylenediamine, diethylenetriamine, tetraethylenepentamine, trimethylenediamine and triethylenetetramine.
As examples of alkylene oxides suitable for the reaction with polyamines, mention will be made of ethylene oxide, propylene oxide, butylene oxide and isobutylene oxide, as well as their mixtures. Generally speaking, all of the active hydrogen atoms in polyamines are replaced by hydroxyalkyl groups during the preparation of hydroxyalkylpolyamines.
The esters of fatty acids and of the hydroxyalkylpolyamines can be advantageously obtained by an ester exchange between the hydroxyalkylpolyamines and the lower alkyl esters of higher fatty acids, such as butyl stearate or butyl laurate. The ester exchange takes place in the presence of catalysts such as alkaline earth or alkali hydroxides or alcoholates and also aluminum isopropylate, in the presence, if desired, of solvents such as toluene or xylene . If desired, lower alkyl esters of higher fatty acids mixed together can be used to effect the ester exchange. The acyl radical of the fatty acid alkyl esters preferably contains 12 to 18 carbon atoms.
By choosing the appropriate proportions of the reactants, the hydroxyalkylpolyamine can be fully or partially esterified.
The quaternization of the fatty acid esters and of the hydroxyalkylpolyamines can be carried out by heating with known quaternizing agents such as, for example, alkyl halides and other alkyl esters such as methyl chloride, bromide. ethyl, methyl sulfate (or dimethyl sulfate) and methyl p-toluem-sulfonate.
The fatty acid esters and hydroxyalkylpolyamines contain more than one tertiary amino group and a monoquaternary or polyquaternary ammonium salt will form depending on the proportion of quaternizing agent used.
The compounds of the present invention can be used in a manner similar to the compounds which are the subject of the main patent, and they are particularly useful as emollients and antistatic agents for textile materials of natural or synthetic origin, such as as cellulose acetate, nylon and vinyl resins.
The fatty acid esters used in the present invention can be prepared by the methods described in Examples 1 to 10 and the compounds of the present invention can be prepared as described in Examples 11 to 20, these examples not limiting the present invention. invention.

The quaternary ammonium salts of the present invention are capable of dispersing in water and have surface-active properties.
They can be easily applied to textile materials from aqueous dispersions as described in the example following which the percentages are expressed by weight.
