<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Les objets précédents et d'autres objets plus détaillés comme il ap- paraîtra dans la suite sont obtenus par les structures illustrées aux dessins annexés dansdesquels : - figure 1 est une vue de dessus d'un truck à six roues avec trois organes de support de charge; - figure 2 est une coupe verticale longitudinale faite approximative- ment suivant la ligne 2-2 de la figure 1 et montrant aussi une partie du châssis du véhicule; - figure 3 est une coupe transversale verticale faite approximative- ment suivant la ligne 3-3 de la figure 1 ; - la figure 4 est une coupe verticale longitudinale faite suivant la ligne 4-4 de la figure 3; - la figure 5 est une coupe verticale transversale faite approximati- vement suivant la ligne 3-3 de la figure 1 mais montrant une seconde forme de réalisation de l'invention;

vement suivant la ligne 3-3 de la figure 1 mais montrant une quatrième forme de réalisation suivant l'invention; - la figure 8 est une vue en perspective de la traverse et des balan- ciers associés;
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

The invention relates to railway rolling stock and, more particularly, to means associated with a road vehicle chassis to allow lateral movement between the chassis and the trucks.
In electric diesel locomotives, space limitations on the locomotive frame often make it necessary to use relatively short wheelbase trucks while at the same time other factors which include the condition of the locomotive. track and the requirements imposed by the power used may make the use of six-wheel trucks with a separate motor for each set of wheels and axles desirable because of the large amount of equipment carried by superstructure, it is generally desirable -) - that the height of the frame measured from the rail be kept as low as possible o It is also of prime importance that the weight of the locomotive be distributed evenly over each of the wheels.
These problems have all been solved by providing a truck structure comprising a unitary truck chassis, carried by springs via compensating balances on three sets of axles and wheels. To reserve a suitable space above the intermediate axle to house the motor associated with it, the truck frame is moved from its usual position above the intermediate axle, towards one end of the truck and to distribute part of the vehicle body load at the other end of the truck and to give proper lateral stability a pair of laterally spread load pads are located on the truck frame between the axle assembly and- of wheels, median and opposite.
In order to give a suitable space for the engines longitudinally in the truck and at the same time to reduce the wheelbase as well as to simplify the problem of load distribution, the load bearing and the load bearings are integral with the frame of the truck. To ensure a constant uniform weight distribution, a non-yielding counter-block and a bundle of load carriers not able to yield sideways are provided on the locomotive frame to be able to both slide and pivot. compared to the truck frame and load pads.
Trucks of this type are very satisfactory at speeds up to and including 60 mph, but at higher speeds they are generally not satisfactory due to the fact that movement has not been anticipated. side of the body in relation to the truck. In the usual trucks used in high-speed service; mobile cross members allowing lateral movement, carrying the truck frame by means of rockers, are provided with a spring base and movable cross member springs interposed but, in some cases, directly, In any case, the fact of providing a movable cross member with oscillating movement requires a considerable longitudinal space in the chassis of the truck to accommodate the rockers and the additional cross member structure.
This requires a larger wheelbase which, as noted above, is not always possible.
A principal object of the invention is to provide a locomotive and truck arrangement, means for allowing relative lateral movement between the body of the locomotive and the trucks, while retaining the peculiarities of short wheelbase and length. uniform distribution of the weight specific to the truck, as discussed above.
A more detailed object is to achieve the main object by providing a movable crossmember with oscillating movement associated with the frame of the locomotive rather than the truck.
An additional object is to provide a truck and body arrangement of the type described above, in which the lateral movements of the body are made possible in part by a movable crossmember with oscillating movement associated with the body, cooperating with the body. crapaudine of the truck and partly by sliding the body, on the load pads, and at the same time to provide means to make each of the three supports, body and load, of the truck
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
constantly remains in full cooperation regardless of the lateral displacement of the body.
In this connection, it is evident that in the absence of these means, the tilting of the movable cross member which occurs when the ordinary oscillating cross member moves laterally would result in an angular opening between the horizontal faces facing each other from the frame due to the parallelism maintained between the chassis and the truck chassis by the load pads and the associated body supports.
These objects are obtained by supporting the chassis by balances from a mobile crosspiece carried by the slider of the truck. To prevent partial separation between the cooperating parts of the truck and the frame of any of the load carriers, in the preferred form of the invention, the frame is supported by the cross member using normal vertical rockers and provides non-yielding load supports and a cylindrical slider.
The vertical outriggers allow the movable cross member to remain parallel to the frame at all times instead of tilting during the lateral movement of the frame and therefore there is no tendency on the part of the frame parts. of the mobile cross member of the truck to be separated.
In another form of the invention, normally inclined rockers, load carriers which do not yield and a spherical slider are used to allow the tilting of the movable cross member without separation between the cross member and the truck frame. .
In a third embodiment, inclined balances are similarly provided but the usual cylindrical slider is used and load supports which can yield with spherical bearings, the non-parallelism between the truck and the frame resulting from the tilting of the cross member. mobile being absorbed in the springs and in the spherical bearings of the load carriers.
In a fourth embodiment of the invention, inclined rockers and load carriers are provided which do not yield, but by introducing a relatively thick rubber cushion between the truck and cross member parts of the cylindrical slider to take up. , by the possibility of yielding in compression, the tilting of the crosspiece during its lateral movements.

<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Event along line 3-3 of Figure 1 but showing a fourth embodiment according to the invention; FIG. 8 is a perspective view of the cross member and the associated balancers;
The truck comprises three sets of axles and wheels 11, 12 and 13 each having a pair of axle boxes 14. Pairs of balancing arms 17 and 18 extend between each box of the middle assembly 12 and the boxes of end assemblies 11 and 13.
Coil springs 19 located on compensating rockers 17 and 18 resiliently support the chassis of the truck 20. The chassis of the truck 20 comprises, wheel parts 22 and cross members.
23 and 24, intermediate cross members 26 and 27 and a central longitudinal piece 28.
Three support members comprising a cylindrical catch 30 on the cross member 26 and elongated and laterally spaced load pads on the cross member 27 are provided for the U frame of the vehicle. The central axis 30 is located on the longitudinal center line of the truck at the intersection of the cross member 26 and the longitudinal part 28 and the load pads 31 are located respectively at the opposite end parts of the cross member 27. The bearings load are stretched in a direction generally transverse to the truck with their largest axes tangent to an arc having the frame at its center.
The three load carriers form rigid parts of the truck frame. The engine and gearbox assemblies 32 are associated with each axle and supported in part by it and in part by chairs by neighboring intermediate cross members.
The locomotive U-frame comprises a pair of longitudinally extending I-section stringers 33 connected from place to place by cross pieces comprising spaced apart rails 34. The upper and lower cover plates 35 and 35a are connected. the spar 33, the lower cover plate 35a being eliminated between the spacers 34 to form between them a space receiving the movable cross member. To provide for relative lateral movement between the truck and the frame, a laterally movable cross member 36 is located in the space between the struts 34.
The movable cross member 36 is formed with a cylindrical clamp 37 which is in pivotal cooperation and able to support the loads with the clamp of the truck 300
In the preferred form of the invention, shown in FIG. 3, the movable cross member 36 is provided at its ends with extended ears 38 where rockers 40 are pivotally suspended at 39. At their lower ends, the rockers 40 are pivotally connected at 41 to chairs 42 extending inward and downward from the side members 33 so as to cause the side members 33 and the lower frame U to be carried by the movable cross member 36 to allow movement lateral relative to it.
To prevent the cross member 36 from moving transversely to the frame to transmit longitudinal forces from the truck to the frame, cooperating wear plates 43 and 44 are provided on the adjacent walls of the movable cross member and spacers respectively. To prevent excessive lateral movement of the movable cross member relative to the frame, stops 45 are attached to the frame side members in alignment with the end surface of the ears 38 which support the rockers.
Part of the body load is transmitted to the truck by non-yielding cylindrical elements 48 which are attached to the U-frame in vertical alignment with the load carrier 31 and which are received on the latter to allow movement of the load. sliding with respect to it responding to the oscillating movement of the truck around the slider.
To prevent vertical separation between the body and the truck, without interfering with the normal movements of the truck relative to the body, laterally extending pins 49 each carried by a pair of erect protrusions laterally spaced on each wheel piece 22, are passed through. through the opening
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
in longitudinally extending U-shaped pieces 49a, the ends of these pieces being fixed to the frame. These devices are in transverse alignment with the crapaudine.
It will be seen that during operation the U-frame will be free to move laterally with respect to the movable cross member 36 and with respect to the truck but that the horizontal surfaces of the sliders of the movable cross member of the truck will at the same time remain parallel at all times due to of the vertical arrangement of the rockers 40. Thus although the body moves a maximum distance laterally as permitted by the stops 45, there will be no tendency for the cranks of the crossmember and of the truck. 'be partly free from each other as would be the case if the mobile cross member could tilt transversely with respect to the truck and the chassis.
In the second form of the invention, shown in figure 5, the arrangement of the parts is generally similar to that shown in figures 1 to 4 and the same description of the structure is applicable except for the differences indicated. below. In this embodiment, the balancers 50 are inclined in the usual manner to give varying resistance against the forces tending to move the frame laterally of the truck.
To compensate for the tilting which occurred during the lateral displacement due to the inclination of the rockers, a spherical ccapaudine structure is provided, the central portion 52 of which of the movable cross member coming into contact with the concave part 53 of the frame. of the truck, so that when the cross member tilts during the lateral movement, although the truck frame is retained parallel to the vehicle frame by means of the load pads 31 and its co-operating elements 48, the cross member part mobile of the cra- paudine simply rotates around a horizontal axis in the part of the truck and no separation occurs,
A third form of the invention is shown in figure 6 in which the construction of the balances and of the movable cross member is similar to figure 5,
except that ordinary cylindrical orapaudin is provided here. To compensate for the tilting of the crossmember and prevent separation into any of the three load carriers, the elements of the lower frames which can cooperate with the load carriers 31 include a piston 54 arranged to have vertical movement in one. Cylindrical casing 55 incorporated into the frame. The lower end surface 57 of the piston 54 is of a spherical shape and contacts a corresponding spherical surface on the bearing pad 58 which, in turn, slidably rests on the load pad 31.
The coil spring 59 in the casing 55 constantly biases the piston 54 downwards so that the bearing pads 58 are always in sliding contact with the load pads 31, any angular deviation between the truck and the frame coming from the tilting of the moving cross member being absorbed by the spherical connection between the pistons 54 and the pads 58.
Figure 7 shows a fourth form of the invention in which rockers 50 and non-yielding frame support members '48 are provided. In this form of tilting the cross member is absorbed by inter- posing a relatively thick pad 63 of rubber or rubber-like material between the horizontal surfaces of the cylindrical frame halves 61 and 62, the pad being able to yield in compression by responding to the angular deviations between the sling halves.
The details of the structures may be varied substantially without departing from the spirit of the invention and the exclusive use of the variations falling within the scope of the appended claims is included.
