<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
On décrit ci-dessous d'autres traits caractéris- tiques.

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

The present invention relates to an achromatic prism system with variable focal length, designed to vary the focal length of all optical systems and lenses, and therefore for image projection, image reproduction, imaging. photography of images, alteration of images, etc.
Hitherto known optical systems, spherical and cylindrical, systems which have a generally fixed focal length have been used for the projection, presentation, photography and alteration of images.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
determining the distance between the projector and the image screen and also the circumstances to be taken into account during operation under known ordinary conditions. However, when the present system of achromatic prisms with variable focal length is used, the change of lenses and image frames to obtain the desired conditions is avoided.
The invention relates to a system designed to be mounted in relation to the main objective forming the image, this system being capable of. to vary the light rays and the focal length in accordance with the conditions requiring alteration of the image and the distance, a result which until now was only obtained by changing the main lenses with different focal lengths. The present achromatic prism system operates independently in the horizontal and vertical direction and is constructed as a variable unit.
The invention is mainly characterized by a system with variable focal length, this system comprising four adjustable achromatic prisms, arranged one after the other in the optical axis, with mutual spacing and in a mode such that the variations. desired are possible.
The first two prisms in the variable focal length achromatic system are mounted in such a way with respect to each other that, by an adjusting movement, they modify the passage and the refraction of light rays through them. prisms so that the image can be altered horizontally and vertically to an appropriate desired size. The two second prisms
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
are mounted at right angles to the first prisms and are adjustable relative to each other in the same manner, thereby altering the passage and refraction of light rays vertically, so as to obtain an appropriate vertical image dimension , corresponding to what we want.
Other characteristic features are described below.
The invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying schematic drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the four achromatic prisms arranged one behind the other, while Figure 2 is an end view of two achromatic prisms in two angular positions.
As shown in Fig. 1, the achromatic prism system with variable focal length comprises four achromatic prisms A, B, C and D, which are arranged behind each other along the optical axis with some mutual separation. The achromatic prisms are mounted in an extended housing (not shown) and in front of the first achromatic prism A is mounted the main objective. The latter, not shown in the drawing, may consist of a converging lens or of an optical system with lenses.
The object of the system with achromatic prisms with variable focal length is that the rays, light, represented by arrows 2, passing through the achromatic prisms, are refracted in such a way that the rays, represented by arrows 3, leaving the last prism D, receive directions such as the image, projected through the system with achromatic prisms at variable focal length, either larger or smaller than an image at will

projected through a conventional lens. This result is obtained by positioning and angularly adjusting the achromatic prisms as will be described more specifically below.
In Figure 1, the achromatic prisms are shown in neutral positions in which the variable focal length achromatic prism system does not effect a change in image size. As can be seen, the first two achromatic prisms A and B are mounted in such a way that the refractive ridges 4 thereof are parallel to each other and form a right angle to the optical axis 1, if although the refractive faces 5 and 6 have always a direction transverse to the light rays. Further, the achromatic prisms A and B are mounted such that the refractive ridges 4 thereof face each other in opposite directions.
Each of the achromatic prisms is angularly adjustable along a central axis 7 situated transversely to the direction of the light, this axis being parallel to the refractive edges 4. By rotating these achromatic prisms A and B around their axes according to certain angles, it is possible to alter the dimension of the image. horizontally. The dimensioning of the achromatic prisms must be done in opposite directions from the neutral position, so that when the achromatic prism A is turned to the left, the achromatic prism B must be turned to the right and vice versa. versa.
We show this in figure 2 where the prisms A and B are in neutral position when they are represented in
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
solid lines, while the broken lines. pus show the prisms facing left and right respectively in angular positions corresponding to a desired reduction in the size (height) of the image. If the achromatic prisms are rotated in opposite directions, that is to say respectively to the right and to the left, a refraction is obtained corresponding to an enlargement of the height of the image. Both achromatic prisms can. be turned independently of each other by means of separate rotary knobs or push buttons.
However, these prisms can preferably be coupled together, for example by means of toothed wheels 8 as shown in figure 2, and thus / the achromatic prisms can be rotated in opposite directions using a single rotary knob or pusher.
The two second achromatic prisms C and D are constructed and arranged in the same way as the achromatic prisms A and B, except that they are rotated by 90 around the optical axis with respect to the other achromatic prisms previously mentioned, so that the refractive edges 9 and the achromatic prisms C and D, in addition to being mutually parallel, are also located at an angle of 90 to the refractive edges 4. Each of the achromatic prisms C and D is angular adjustable. around a central axis 10, which is parallel to the refractive edges 9 and forms an angle of 90 with the axes 7.
The set of achromatic prisms C and D behaves in exactly the same way as the set of achromatic prisms A and B. However, since the two sets of achromatic prisms are rotated 90 ° C with respect to each other, the set achromatic of prisms C and D will produce an enlargement
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
and a reduction respectively in the image direction not influenced by the set of achromatic prisms A and B. In the present case it was assumed that the set of achromatic prisms A and B was used for the height alteration d 'picture; the set of achromatic prisms C and D consequently by an adjustment of the achromatic prisms determines an alteration of the image width.
By appropriate adjustment of the achromatic prisms. As a totally proportional alteration of the height and the width of an image can be achieved, so that the image is enlarged and reduced respectively without any distortion.
The two sets of achromatic prisms must be mounted in such a way that they can be adjusted angularly with respect to each other, about the optical axis as the axis of adjustment rotation.
The variable focal length achromatic prism system as described above can be used to take ordinary photographs and cinematographic photographs, to show a cine- matooraphic image of any kind and format, both small and small. enlarged, for image reproduction, as well as for optical sighting and measuring instruments of all kinds for civil, military, astronomical and astronautical use, for television and illumination including projectors and apparatus for alter the illumination conditions, regardless of whether the variable focal length achromatic prism system is designed to be placed in front of a conventional lens or to be contained in such devices

or instruments,
nor that achromatic prisms consist of glass or other refraction materials, known or unknown. The prism system can also be used in connection with collimator lenses.
It is obvious that the apparatus described and shown can be modified in its details without departing from the spirit or the scope of the invention.
