<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>
<Desc/Clms Page number 13>
buse 45.
<Desc/Clms Page number 14>
<Desc/Clms Page number 15>

A burner for welding and metal arc cutting under protective gas must fulfill various functional conditions. The arc produces a very intense heat which is necessary for the welding, but which is very quickly unbearable for the burner; so that powerful cooling by circulating a coolant is Indispensable; in particular, the intense cooling of the gas nozzle is of great importance in the first place, because it avoids, as a result, the sticking and welding of projected particles, as well as strong wear of the gas nozzle. the nozzle and greater gas consumption.
Numerous constructions of the dis-
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
positive lines of water in the burner, but these devices do not take into account the multiple requirements of the practice, in particular when the coolant must be brought to the immediate vicinity of the nozzle.
Apart from the handle or the fixing devices and the actuating devices, burners used for welding and arc cutting of metals under protective gas have, in general, the following main elements:
At the rear, a metal core part which can be fixed in one place, either in a handle in the case of a hand-operated welding gun, or on a support in the case of automatic welders.
At the front, a nozzle which is usually held in a support.
The nozzle and its support are advantageously made of metal.
Since the core is under electrical voltage during soldering and its role is to transmit the electric current directly or through a small supply tube to the electrode, these components must be electrically isolated. - prior metal tutifs of the core to prevent any harmful arc formation by ground contact between the nozzle or its support and the object to be welded. For this purpose, an intermediate electrically insulating part, in one or more parts, is placed between the core and the support.
Further, the metal core has an axial bore for receiving a non-fusible electrode or a small current supply tube through which a fusible wire electrode is advanced and electrically energized.
Since the electrode occupies the axial zone of the burner, it is necessary that the pipes necessary for the circulation of the cooling fluid are outside this axial zone. They are placed in the wall of the burner or they are directed outside the ceral core to the nozzle by the intermediary of small tubes and flexible hoses. In the realization
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
last mentioned, the organs; of passage have. always tend to be leak proof and they are easily damaged in rough service.
Another point is the tightness to be. carried out with care of the protective gas chamber in relation to the chambers through which the cooling fluid passes, as well as: in relation to foreign gases. With all these conditions, the construction of the burner must nevertheless make it easy to handle, simple, robust and safe in operation.
The present invention overcomes the drawbacks of idiots. known constructions and makes it possible to establish the conduits necessary for the circulation of the cooling fluid so that the number of burner elements is reduced to a minimum and that these elements, which all have a substantially cylindrical shape, are arranged coaxially, while being able to take any position around their common axis, the dondults for the coolant being kept in all cases.
The subject of the invention is therefore a cooled burner for welding and arc cutting of metals under protective gas, which has a metal core under electrical tension, during the welder, comprising an axial bore for the electrode and built-in longitudinal channels for supplying and discharging the coolant, as well as a gas nozzle fixed to the mouth of an outer metal casing surrounding on its side a part of the core and electrically insulated from it by at least one non-conductive intermediate part.
According to the invention, the metal casing forms at least the outer wall of at least one chamber for longitudinally directing the cooling fluid, this longitudinal chamber extending at least over a part of its length above. the anterior end of the longitudinal channels located in the core and communicating with each of these two channels by two grooves formed one behind the other - radial passages.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The longitudinal chamber can be in a single place and annular, while communicating near one of its ends by one of the grooves as well as by radial passages with the longitudinal channel located in the core and near its the other end by the second groove as well as by radial passages with the second longitudinal channel located in the core. In this case, the cooling fluid is not led forwards through the anterior end of the core. Only the outer metal casing is cooled, which may be sufficient when the quantity of heat to be removed is not very large.
If, on the other hand, the heat to be removed is greater, which is the case for example when welding with an electrode wire to be melted, the cooling fluid must be conducted more forward to ensure better cooling of the the nozzle . The longitudinal chamber limited by the casing is then advantageously subdivided into two cooling chambers in the form of half-shells which conduct the cooling fluid in the immediate vicinity of the outlet of the nozzle and which evacuate it from there, then which communicate , at each fols, near their posterior ends with one of the two longitudinal channels located in the core by one of the two grooves arranged one behind the other, as well as by radial passages.
The outer casing is then advantageously double-walled and contains the cooling chambers in the form of half-shells between these two walls, the two cooling chambers being separated from each other by two longitudinal fins which however, do not go completely to the front, so that there is communication between the two cooling chambers in the form of half-shells near their front ends. The front end of the cooled casing then serves as a nozzle support and the nozzle is cooled indirectly by the wall of the casing.

cooling hood.
However, if the nozzle is to be able to be cooled directly by the coolant, it is possible to provide around it an annular cooling chamber or preferably two other cooling chambers in the form of half-shells, the inner wall of which is formed. by the nozzle itself. and which are each fols placed in communication with each of the two cooling chambers in the form of half-shells limited by the casing by one of two other front grooves arranged one behind the other, as well as by radial passages.

The burner of Figures 1 to 5 is advantageously intended for non-fusible electrode welding, but it can also be easily adapted for wire electrode welding by replacing the electrode holder.
Apart from the handle and the actuating device which have nothing to do with the invention, the burner has the following main elements:
A metal core 1, an outer metal envelope re 2 which at the same time serves as a support for the metal nozzle 3.
These two outer metal parts are electrically insulated by the Intermediate part 4 of the core under electrical voltage during welding. The core has an axial bore to receive the small tube 5 for supplying the current to the electrode, * in which the non-fusible electrode 6 is enclosed and held fixedly by blocking the nut 8 fixed to the cap. posterior closing chon 7.
The protective gas enters through the bore 30, passes between the small tube 5 and the core 1 forwards to exit through the anterior openings 9, the gas chamber being behind the elastic ring 10 between the. core 1 and the closure cap 7 being completely sealed.
The two longitudinal channels 11 and 12 are formed in the core 1 and are connected by the orifices 13, 14 with the conduits which bring the cooling fluid to the burner and through which this fluid escapes therefrom. In the exemplary embodiment shown, the two longitudinal channels 11 and 12 provided in the core are drilled from the rear and are closed at their rear end to the welds 15 and 16.
- The metal casing 2 forms the outer wall of an annular longitudinal chamber 17, the inner wall of which is formed by the intermediate insulating part 4, the communication between this longitudinal chamber and the two longitudinal channels.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
dinals pierced in the core being made by grooves and radial passages as follows
One of these two longitudinal channels, namely the channel 11, communicates through a radial orifice 18 with a groove 19 which again communicates through at least one radial orifice 20 drilled in the intermediate part with the longitudinal chamber 17.
In another transverse plane, the second longitudinal channel 12 communicates through an orifice 21 with a groove 22 communicating through at least one radial orifice 23 drilled in the intermediate part with the longitudinal chamber 17. It is irrelevant, within the meaning of the invention, whether the two grooves 19 and 22 are made on the surface of the core, as shown, or in the interior surface of the intermediate piece.
So that the coolant cannot flow between the core and the intermediate part from one groove to the other, a labyrinth seal 24 is advantageously provided over this distance.
To stop the circulation of the cooling fluid in a sealed manner with respect to the outside, elastic seals 25 and 26 are advantageously arranged in front of and behind the intermediate piece, the front seal 25 abutting on the ring 28 in two parts fixed in the seat. 27 and the rear seal 26 being placed between the intermediate part 4 and the locking nut 29. By locking this nut 29, the two seals 25 and 26 are tightened at the same time, they close the chambers. Traversed by the coolant and, in addition, exert an outward and inward pressure, keeping the casing 2 on the core 1.
It would also be possible to provide a stopper at the rear and to have the locking nut in front, in place of the ring 28, the tightening then being done from the front.
In the burner described, the cooling fluid performs the following path:
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
It enters through the bore 13, passes through the channel 11, the orifice 18, the groove 19, the orifice 20 and enters the longitudinal chamber 17, from where it is discharged through the orifice 23, the groove 22, the orifice 21, the longitudinal channel 12 and the bore 14. The circulation of the cooling fluid can however also take place in the opposite direction.
The burner shown in Figures 6 to 9 is particularly advantageous for arc welding with a fusible electrode. For more intense cooling of the nozzle, the cooling fluid is brought beyond the anterior end of the core to 'near the nozzle outlet.
As in the first embodiment, the burner comprises a metal core 1 with an axial bore to receive the small current supply tube and the wire electrode, these two elements not being shown, as well as two longitudinal channels. - dinals 11 and 12 connected by orifices 13 and 14 to the conduits which bring the coolant to the burner and which evacuate it. In this exemplary embodiment, the two longitudinal channels 11 and 12 are pierced in the core 1 from the front and are closed at their front ends at the weld points 15 and 16.
The outer metal casing 2 is now double-walled and contains between these two walls two cnamDres 31, et.32 in the form of half-shells which extend rearwardly above the channels 11 and 12 and towards the forward to around the nozzle '3. These two cooling chambers 31, 32 are separated from each other by the two longitudinal fins 33, 34 which do not extend to the front, so that the two cooling chambers 31, 32 communicate the one with the other at their anterior end and that the cooling fluid can flow in these places from one of the cooling chambers into the other. The envelope 2 serves at the same time as a support for the nozzle 3.
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
.finally, the casing 2 is electrically isolated from the core 1 by an intermediate piece, two grooves dug one behind the other establishing the communication of the two longitudinal channels 11 and 12 with each of the two cooling chambers = dissement shaped half-shells 31 and 32, and this because one of the longitudinal channels communicates through a radial orifice and the other cooling chamber through at least one radial orifice with one of the grooves, while the The other longitudinal channel communicates through a radial orifice and the second cooling chamber through at least one radial orifice with the second groove.
So that the cooling fluid cannot flow directly between the core and the intermediate part as well as between the latter and the casing from one of the grooves to the other, it is possible to provide seals over these distances. in labyrinth.
In the exemplary embodiment shown, the intermediate piece is in two parts; it consists of the two rings 35 and 36 threaded one behind the other on the core 1 which each comprise one of the grooves 19 and 22. The longitudinal channel 11 communicates through the orifice 18 with the groove 19 and the longitudinal channel 12 through the orifice 21 with the groove 22. Ies two grooves 19 and 22 communicate through the orifices 20 and 23 with the cooling chambers 31, 32 in the form of half-shells.
In rings 35 and 36, of course, the grooves must be open on both the inner surface and the outer surface and they must therefore extend through the entire wall of the rings, the parts of the rings being finding grooves on both sides being kept spaced from each other by spacers. In the advantageous embodiment shown! of these rings, the grooves are formed by opposed recesses made in the interior surface and in the exterior surface of the rings, a spacer pierced with communication holes 37 being arranged between the recesses.
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
opposites and forming an interlayer.
To seal the coolant circuit, elastic seals 25 and 26, respectively, are placed in front of the front ring 35 and behind the rear ring 360.
The anterior seal 25 bears on the stop 38 made of insulating material screwed onto the core 1. The locking nut 29 screwed onto the core 1 is located behind the rear seal 26. n blocking this nut 29, the two seals 25 and 26 are at the same time energized, sealing in a sealed manner the embers traversed by the coolant and also keeping the casing 2 firmly on the core 1 by exerting a pressure towards it. 'outside and inward.
It is advantageous, but not absolutely necessary, to further place between the two rings 35 and 36 a third seal 39 which seals off the two grooves 19 and 22 with respect to each other.
It would also be possible to fix the stopper
38 in a way that by screwing. (; 'is so, for example, that another two-part ring, similar to ring 28 of Figure 2, could be used and retained in a seat.
A ring of ceramic material 40 may be placed in front of the outlet of the core and the stopper 38, this ring simultaneously protecting the two above-mentioned parts from any metal particles which may be projected and also contributing to the regular distribution of the protective gas leaving the core.
In order to ensure perfect cooling of the nozzle, hence as large a passage as possible of the heat from the nozzle to the cooled casing, the nozzle must be properly fitted into the casing. this result is best obtained by providing on the nozzle 3 a conical surface 41 adapted to a corresponding conical surface of the mouth of the casing
2 and pressed by means of a cap nut 43 which engages a projection 42 of the nozzle.
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
In this burner, the cooling fluid enters through the orifice 13, passes through the longitudinal channel 11, the orifice 18, the groove 19, the orifice 20 into the half-shell chambers 31, where 11 is directed towards the front until close to the nozzle 3. It passes, in this place, around the front ends of the fins 33, 34 forming partitions to enter the second cooling chamber 32 and is discharged through the orifice 23, the groove 22, the orifice 21, the longitudinal channel 12 and the bore 14. The cooler fluid can naturally follow the reverse path in the burner.
The protective gas is led forward into the core 1 through the longitudinal bore 44.
The third exemplary embodiment of the burner according to the invention shown in FIGS. 10 and to 16 presents, with respect to the two embodiments previously described, the additional characteristic that the nozzle is cooled directly by the cooler fluid. Another difference lies in the ae fixing mode of the insulating intermediate piece and of the casing on the core. These parts are aimed at each other instead of being held together by tightening joints.
In this exemplary embodiment, the burner suitable in particular for welding with a fusible wire electrode again has a metal core 1 with an axial bore to receive the small electric current supply tube and the electroae, these two elements n 'not being shown, and two longitudinal channels 11 and 12 which communicate through orifices 13, 14 with the conduits which bring the coolant to the burner and discharge it. The two longitudinal channels 11 and 12 are drilled from the front in the core 1 and are firm at the welds 15 and 16.
The two longitudinal chamores 31, 32 in the form of half-shells are located between the metal casing 2 and the intermediate part 4; they are separated from each other by the
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
Longitudinal fins 33, 34 integral with the intermediate part 4 and they each communicate with the two longitudinal channels 11, 12 of the core 1 by one of the two grooves arranged one behind the other, as well as by radial passages , and this in the following way:
The longitudinal channel 11 communicates through an orifice 18 with the groove 19 and the latter communicates through at least one orifice 20 with the longitudinal chamber 31.
In addition, the longitudinal channel 12 communicates through an orifice 21 with the groove 22 and the latter communicates through at least one orifice 23 with the longitudinal chamber 32.
The intermediate piece 4 is screwed onto the core 1 behind the grooves 19 and 22 and extends forwards beyond the anterior end of the core 1. The nozzle 3 and its support 45 are engaged in the anterior mouth. from the intermediate part 4 to below the longitudinal chambers 31 and 32. The two inner chambers 46 and 47 for cooling the nozzles are enclosed between the nozzle and its support, then communicate with the cooling chambers 31 and 32 by two grooves anterior 48 and 49 hollowed out one behind the other, as well as by radial passages. The arrangement and the conformation of the grooves 48 and 49, as well as the passages relating thereto, may correspond exactly to those of the grooves 19 and 22 and the passages relating thereto.
But we have represented here a slightly different arrangement as a possible variant:
The groove 49 is located between the intermediate part 4 and the nozzle support 45, the chamber 32 being closed at its front end by a projection 50 formed on the intermediate part.
The groove 49 communicates with the chamber 32 through at least one orifice 51 and with the nozzle cooling chamber 47 through at least one orifice 52. On the other hand, the groove 48 is established so that a gap is formed between 1 ' front end of the intermediate piece 4 and a projection 53 formed on the support of
<Desc / Clms Page number 13>
nozzle 45. The groove 48 thus formed communicates with the chamber 31 by its end 54 left open and with the chamber 46 for cooling the nozzle via at least one orifice 55.
The two cooling chambers in the form of half-shells of the nozzle have been formed here in the nozzle support and are separated from each other by the two longitudinal fins 56 and 57, but these two fins do not extend forward only to an extent desired so that there is still communication between the two cooling chambers 46 and 47, so that the coolant can flow from one of the half-shell cooling chambers into the other and be nevertheless forced to flow completely to the front; 11. A vapor blanket could otherwise form in the front part of the cooling chamber which would interfere with the cooling of the nozzle.
The nozzle 3 is held in the support 45 by a cap nut 43. Miis it would also be possible to weld the nozzle in its support.
The casing 2 is constituted here in the form of a cap nut, it immobilizes the support 45 of the nozzle and it is screwed behind the longitudinal chambers 31, 32 on the intermediate part 4. A certain number of seal rings 58 ensure the sealing of the chambers through which the cooling fluid passes from the outside, the two rear seals being tightened by the two nuts 59 and 600
The protective gas is advantageously conducted through a channel 30 provided in the core 1 to the gas chamber located between the latter and the small electric current supply tube, not shown.
The grooves 19, 22 and 49 are hollowed out here in the surface of the core 1 and of the support 45 But, it would also have been possible to hollow them out in the inner surface of the intermediate part 4; It is in fact Indifferent, according to the invention) whether the four grooves are, hollowed out in the core or in the intermediate part or again partly in the core and partly in the internal part.
<Desc / Clms Page number 14>
term. In addition, it would also be possible to form the intermediate part differently at its rear part, for example in the same way as shown for its anterior part.
It would then simply be fitted onto the core and held onto it by means of a cap nut which would engage, as shown, on the nozzle support and cover the intermediate piece, but would be screwed onto a insulating ring fixed (for example screwed) on the core behind the intermediate piece.
The rearmost hollowed out groove could then be provided for example between the Intermediate part and this other ring.
In the burner shown, the cooling fluid enters through bore 13, flows through longitudinal channel 11, orifice 18, groove 19, orifice 20, longitudinal chamber 31, orifice 54, the groove 48, the orifice 55, the chamber 46 for cooling the nozzle and arrives at the anterior end of this chamber, where it flows around the fins 56, 57 in the chamber 47 for cooling the nozzle. the nozzle. From there it is discharged through the orifice 52, the groove 49, the orifice 51, the longitudinal chamber 32, the orifice 23, the groove 22, the orifice 21, the longitudinal channel 1 and the bore 14. However, the circulation of the cooling fluid can also be done in the opposite direction.
Other combinations of the elements are also possible while allowing the cooling fluid to be conducted according to the invention. For example, the double-walled casing according to the second embodiment can be combined with direct cooling of the nozzle by the coolant.
The burner according to the invention, three different embodiments of which have been described, has the advantage of intense cooling which can be obtained in the simplest manner. All of the burner parts have an essentially cylindrical shape; they are coaxial with the core and can take any position around their common axis.
The burn-
<Desc / Clms Page number 15>
they can be mounted without difficulty simply by engaging, screwing or fitting these elements into one another in the correct order of succession without taking into account the position of the various elements around their common axis. In the first two embodiments of the burner shown by way of example in FIGS. 1 to 9, it is even sufficient to block a single nut in this way, namely 'nut 29, in order to close the circuit of the cooling fluid in a sealed manner by from the outside and to immobilize at the same time in their assembly position all the listed burner components.
By simply loosening this nut, you can immediately remove the cooling jacket with the nozzle, check the various parts and replace them if necessary.
In the description and in the drawing, in each case there is provided in the core a longitudinal channel for the supply of the cooler fluid and another longitudinal channel for its evacuation. But it is possible, without departing from the scope of the invention, to provide in the core several supply channels and several discharge channels operating in the same way, which may even be advantageous in practice to obtain a larger total section of these channels, and the grooves as well as the cooling chambers can also be subdivided.
Liquids, such as water for example, are generally suitable as coolant; where appropriate, it is also possible to use gases, in particular compressed air.
