<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>

The present invention relates to devices used to join in a sintering machine, an upper wind box or botta to a lower wind box mounted so as to allow the pallets and the crews of rollers to move along a determined path between this hood and this The wind box
Machines of this type are used not only for the frying of mineral concentrates and the like, but they have a large number of equivalent uses, including calcination, grain burning, heat treatment, grilling, etc .. For

more ease,
hereinafter the expression sintering machine will be used ",
The general object of the invention is to provide a simple, efficient and durable device, serving to prevent leaks and losses of air or gas at positive or negative pressure through the tubes. movable shutter elements ensuring the sealing between the. pallets and the adjacent edges of the upper hood and the windbox, as well as along the pallet supports. or It can be considered that the device of the sealing system according to the invention is more particularly studied with a view to adaptation to sintering machines of the Dwight-Lloyd type.
For the implementation of the invention, a closed tunnel-shaped chamber extends over the entire length of the sealing device of the windbox and of the hood. This chamber, or tunnel, forms an additional enclosure surrounding the longitudinally oriented sealing device and the pallet support rollers, and air or gas entering or leaving the end portions is prevented from entering. in this tunnel-shaped space, while pebbles can enter and exit.
By virtue of this arrangement, it is possible to generate inside the sealing chamber a positive or negative flow of air or gas having the desired relationship with that prevailing in the tunnel-shaped sealing chamber. .
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Oven if the deseription is greater, this chamber will be simply referred to as "tunnel" in many places throughout. during the description which follows.
The timmel can be maintained under positive or negative pressure, as needed, to prevent leakage, or it can be filled with suitable gases.
One of the important objects of the invention is, in other words, to achieve a substantially airtight or gas-tight communication between the upper and lower windboxes, which enables the pallets and Conjugate roller crews move along the machine between the wind boxes, without loss of positive pressure or. negative air or gases used.
The following description, given with reference to the accompanying drawings, given without limitation and relating to preferred embodiments of the invention, applying to sealing devices used in sintering machines of the Dwight type. Lloyd, will provide a better understanding of this invention.

There is shown in cross section in FIG. 1 the frame and the movable pallets of a sintering machine of the type to which the invention applies in a particularly interesting way.
An embodiment of the invention is shown in figs. 1 to 4, The movable pallets designated by the reference 10 are. studied in such a way as to move in an abutting relationship along a horizontal path. They are supported (except as indicated below) by rollers 11 which roll on rails 12. These rails are in turn supported by a frame desired generally by reference numeral 15 and. which includes suitable vertical and horizontal members'.
The rails 16, visible in FIG. l, form a lower return strand for the pallets. The device forming the object of the invention simply seals the ion of the path followed by the pallets as they move in contact with one another during sintering. Although it is usual, in the machines of this. Typically, to ensure the return of these pallets to the ions of a lower strand located in the sintering path, it will be understood that other methods can be used

not limited to the return of the pallets provided here, as will be understood below. '
EMI6.2
There is provided, under the path do f-itta [: 3, a lower wind box desired by the reference 20. This wind box here comprises side panels, fixed to side members 22 by which they are supported, these side members having back wings 23 directed upwards, on which are fixed sealing elements, as described below.
The upper wind box, or

In the arrangement shown the pallets 1C Compren-. nent of: transverse horizontal grids and the usual side walls 26 intended to retain the material. It is provided, outside these side walls, ner-. Longitudinal openings forming 'support and guide surfaces, and elements carrying the hubs of the rollers.
Longitudinal angles 35, adjustable in the vertical direction, are provided between the wings 23 of the struts 22 (which are connected to the upper parts of the side walls of the lower wind box 20) and the pallets 10. The vertical adjustment of these angles may be secured by screws indicated at 36, assuming that the angles 35 are secured by bolts or screws passing through elongated or oblong shaped holes.
The angles forming side members 35 carry sealing strips 37 provided on their upper face with wear guards 38 co-operating with similar wear linings 39 provided on the vanes. Similar wear linings provided on the palsttes and on the sealing strips 40 extending along the boot may seal by sliding, in the same manner as the linings 38 and 39.
A connection plate 41 is fixed on the bar 40. This plate extends over the entire length of the hood, and it projects laterally to an angle bar 43 presenting. a longitudinal groove in the upper face of its wing directed inward. This

groove receives a flange,] 4, 1 <nLatiu downwards, provided on. the free edge of the plate 41. This pl <iq3 thus covers by obstructing the space between the pazoi 25 of the hood and the sealing strip 110.
The arrangement which has just been described with reference to FIG. 2 corresponds to an already known construction. However,

wind.
As indicated above, according to the invention, there is provided a device mounted on the outside of the sealing strips and of the sliding or wear linings, as well as on the outside of the rollers of the pallets, so as to produce a gas-tight connection between the hood and the lower air box; This tunnel-shaped casing runs the entire length of the upper and lower air boxes

a vertical portion 50 extending downward from the side wall 25 of the hood, then running inward, as shown at 55. The inner edge of the plate 50,55 can pass through

sealing 3 and by the wear linings f3 and 39 on the part of this path between the hood and the wind box.
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
The wear linings provided between the pallet and the sealing strip 37 are suitably lubricated, preferably by means of a lubricant supply and metering device.
The members which form the tunnel which has just been described may be made of metal, of a heat-resistant woven material, or of other composite materials having sufficient flexibility to allow vertical displacements of small amplitude in view of the adjustment of the position of the wear linings 38 and 39.
It can be seen that the parts 50. And 55 of the tunnel form, in fact, the extensions of the sides or side walls of the hood, outside the rollers and under them, so that an effective sealing without slipping is completed between the hood and, the lower wind box.
If it is assumed that the tunnel ends are closed, and if air or gas is routed upward through the pallet grids, under positive or negative pressure, no leakage occurs between the upper part of the lower wind box and the lower part of the hood.
The passage of air or gas in the downward direction likewise takes place entirely through the grids', owing to the presence of the upper plate 41 of the tumel and the sliding sealing elements provided between the grids. , on the one hand, and the hood and the wind box, on the other hand.
It is obvious that without special measures a considerable leak could occur at the ends of the tunnel. A closure device is provided, consequently at these ends, this device cooperates with the rollers 11 in such a way that they penetrate into the tunnel.
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
and can exit, while preventing the free passage of gases or any appreciable leak.
According to the '. Embodiments shown in FIGS. 2, 3 and 4, the end parts of the tunnel are each fitted with a longitudinal furring 60, preferably of metal, in which is formed a longitudinal passage open on one side and shaped as indicated in 61 so as to match the profile of the rollers to. sausages 11 and their mo- eyes. '
A flexible material for gland packing may be disposed above and below the furring 60, the retort indicated at 62 and 63.
The elasticity of this sealing ensuring the sealing allows a limited relative displacement between the sealing gaskets and the sleeve 60. There is indicated at 64 (Fig. 4) holes allowing the passage of the screws used for fixing. of the fur 60, in order to prevent. its longitudinal displacement while allowing a slight vertical adjustment.
As shown in the cross-sectional view which forms FIG. 3, the rails 12 are removed inside the tunnel, although the furring and the gland packing can. surround the rails if it is desirable to pass them through the tunnel. The slowness of the fur 60 is such that it always surrounds soft or several pallet rollers, as shown in the profile view which forms the pin 4.which prevents leaks and the passage of fluid around the rollers, which must, as will be understood, move with a slight play in the space provided by the fur 60.

reigning in the wind box or in the hood, which can be hand held. in this room. Thus, the sintering or the like carried out in the machine is carried out in a more efficient manner due to the absence of air or gas leaks.
In the tunnel described above, it was assumed that the sealing hood was fixed to the frame. However, the weight of the hood can be partially carried by the sealing strips, and can be adjustably balanced to remove pressure and friction, and the resulting wear on the gaskets. It has been shown in fig. 6. a tunnel fixed to an assembly and support frame of a hood.
Referring to the arrangement shown in FIG. 6, it will be noted that the upper sealing strip 40 is fixed to a Z-shaped bar 70, tightly fixed to a lower longitudinal U-bar 80, fitted to the lower edge of the side wall 25 of the hood.
Stirrups or yokes 81, projecting laterally, are fixed on the U-shaped iron 80, the branches of these stirrups being crossed by a vertical rod 85, which can slide through a flange 87 fixed on a vertical member of the frame of the machine A spring 88 is mounted so that its tension can be adjusted to control the weight which can be absorbed by the sealing strips and the mating wear linings during movement of the pallets.

necessary to pass the rails through the sealing tunnel.
It is desirable that the upper and lower sides of the tunnel and their fastening element to the hood and to the windbox have self-supporting characteristics and retain some flexibility, and it is obvious. In this regard, that one can use various types of walls to form the tunnel. The profile delimited for example by the parts 50 and 51 can be modified, as indicated schematically in FIGS. 8,9 and 10.
In Fig. 8, plate 93 is curved like a watch. In fig.9, the plate 94 may have folds directed in opposite directions. On figure 10, a single offset zone 95 can give the plate the necessary flexibility.
It is obvious that other shapes can make it possible to achieve the aim pursued. Other variants of the tunnel are shown, for example in figs. 11 to 14. In the embodiment shown in FIG. 1.1, a lower wind box 120 is used, the connection mode of which - to the sealing strip corresponds substantially to that shown in FIG. 2.
A wing is planned here

plate and provided with a threaded part onto which are screwed nuts 181 -disposed respectively above and below the plate.
The lower sealing plate 185 is. preferably sealed with a dewlap to the wall 170 and to the lower sealing strip 37, thereby sealing the lower windbox, which is indicated at 20. A substantially sealed tunnel is thus obtained. An advantage resulting from this particular position of the screen plate 175, which is tilted downward and inward towards the pallets,. is the prevention of any accumulation / material on the upper face of this inclined plate.
There is shown in FIG. 14, a method of étahchéisation by tunnels, carried out on the opposite sides of the pallets, and it has also been shown, the connections made with the hood and the lower or main wind box. In these figures, the pallets 10a are narrow and have relatively high side walls 26a. The lower wind box 20a comprises a duct 21a disposed laterally, bringing air or gas to the wind and discharging them from this box.
The airtight connections made with the lower wind box -may correspond to those described previously, and it is of course possible to provide a certain number of wind boxes and conduits of this type, as required, to obtain correct operation of the machine.
The air or gases can be brought to the upper faces of the pallets or can be evacuated therefrom by a manifold 190 connected at 191 to the vault 192.

hood having a downwardly directed portion 195 located on one side of the pallet path, outside the rollers 11, and suitably connected to the assembly by a lower sealing plate, as shown in 194 .
The upper part of this tunnel can be closed by a vertical plate-shaped element 195, directed downwards, fixed on the upper wall 1% 2 and extending inside the side walls of the pallets 26a.
The length of this plate 195 corresponds to several pallets, and it is a function of the length of the hotta itself.
On the other side of the path followed by the pallets there is provided a vertical wall 1% 6, which is connected to the lower sealing strip by a horizontal plate 197, while an upper plate 198 extends. above the upper face of the adjacent side wall of the pallets and has a flange 199 folded down.
Access holes such as 138a can be provided at appropriate points in the vertical walls.
It can be seen, on reading the preceding description, that in the various embodiments considered an inexpensive, durable and efficient device is obtained, making it possible to connect the upper and lower wind boxes, bypassing the path. followed by mobile pallets.
According to the squid represented for example on the fies. 1 12, the tunnel is made watertight by the moving plates of a mayor preventing sensitive

any passage of gas or air. According to the embodiment shown in los fig.s 13 and 14, the seal between the vanes and the lower wind box pockets the passage of air,
and the sealing elements provided on the upper inner edges of the side walls of the pallets can be used for a large number of applications, since they provide the sealing of the upper part of longitudinal tunnels.
In all cases, free or floating particles of material are prevented from coming into contact with the lower sealing strips and strips; 'Sealing strips and wear linings prevent the infiltration of air or gas around the vanes and thus ensure the passage of air or gases through the material on the fins. of pallet cases.
The sealing tunnel, including the ends; are designed so as to be closed while allowing the passage of the pallet rollers with a view to their penetration in this tunnel or their exit, allows to obtain a determined or balanced pressure inside the tunnel, which prevents even greater efficiency in the escape of harmful gases :, as well as the resulting loss of yield during sintering or roasting.
Adjustments and repair or replacement of wear linings can be carried out in a latic fashion. The slow functioning of the machine is by no means stopped.
As indicated above, the details of construction can be modified, in the field of technical equivalences, without departing from the invention.
