<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

The present invention relates to a machine for continuously quenching cylindrical-looking bodies, the length of which may be as great as desired.
It is necessary to obtain a regular quench on these products by ensuring uniform cooling over each straight section, which amounts to eliminating or making negligible any parasitic phenomenon such as the dissymmetry of the distribution of the fluid from quenching, under the action of gravity, for example.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
When it comes to quenching small parts such as gears, such a goal can be easily achieved by rotating the workpiece around its axis. Such an operating mode is impracticable if one wishes to treat heavy or bulky parts.
The invention makes it possible to obtain the result mentioned above and to avoid the drawbacks of known arrangements.
To this end, the invention comprises a machine in which a distribution cylinder, provided with distribution nozzles, is secured to a rotating tubular body to form with the latter a distribution chamber, the rotating tubular body itself being. even mounted in a fixed distributor and driven in rotation by a motor return, the product to be quenched axially passing through said distribution cylinder.
The description which will follow, with reference to the appended drawing, by way of non-limiting example, will make it possible to clearly understand how the invention is put into practice while bringing out other advantageous features.
Fig. 1 shows in partial section the quenching mechanism.
Fig. 2 shows on a larger scale the radial arrangement of the quenching fluid distributing nozzles.
The mechanism shown comprises a casing 1 fixed to any suitable support and communicating by an external connection 2 with a source of quenching fluid. One of the sides of the approximately cylindrical body 1 is connected by a collar to a bearing support 3 which contains rollers 4 protected on the outside by a dust shield 5 and on the inside by baffles 6.
The opposite end of body 1 is likewise connected
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
by flange to a second bearing support 7 containing rollers 8 protected by internal baffles 9. The bearing support 7 supports the flange 10 of a housing. gearbox which receives a housing 11 and a cover plate 12, the flange 10 and the plate 12 themselves supporting the bearings of a shaft 13 driven by a pulley 14. The shaft 13 carries a pinion d 'gear 15 intended to drive a toothed ring 16 centered on the longitudinal axis of the body, 1.' This ring 16 is carried by the end of a distribution drum 17 which is supported by rollers 4 and 8.
This pivoting distribution drum opens through wide openings 18 inside the body 1, the zone provided with the openings 18 being comprised between two sealing surfaces 19 and 20 surrounded respectively by gaskets 21 and 22. The gasket 21 is fixed on an internal flange of one of the ends of the body 1 and the gasket 22 is fixed on an end flange of the bearing support 7.
The drum 17 has at one of its ends a ring 23 which receives the end flange 24 of a distributor drum 25, the watertight fixing being obtained by tightening, by means of bolts 26, of a gasket 27 placed in an annular groove of the flange 24 and clamped to the bottom of said groove by an annular hooking rib of the ring 23.
The opposite end of the drum 25 is provided with a flat ring 28 which clamps by a rib 29 a seal
30 placed at the bottom of a groove formed in the surface of a flange 31 fixed by bolts 32 in an end internal reinforcement of the drum 17.
In this way, the sealing of the distribution chamber between the drum 17 and the drum 25 is ensured by the aforementioned seals, under the effect of the clamping.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
bolts 26. It is thus made convenient to change the distribution cylinder without the need to change the distribution drum, depending on the diameter of the product being treated and the hardening law to be applied to it.
The distribution drum 25 is used for the projection of jets e is provided for this purpose with nozzles 33 according to a distribution and in number which depend on the desired result for the quenching envisaged. It is advantageous to implant the nozzles 33, only one of which has been shown in the drawing, in an oblique direction with respect to a radius of the cylinder formed by the drum 25 and also in an oblique direction with respect to a diametral plane of said cylinder.
The projection height of the nozzle, inside the drum 25 forming the distribution chamber, is chosen at a level which remains greater than the thickness of the liquid stream applied by the centrifugal force on the internal wall of this drum, so that unbraked jets reach the wall of the body to be quenched. To facilitate and regulate the flow of this liquid stream, the flange 24 offers a profiled shape, the ring 28 with an internal projecting crown preventing the flow of a sheet of liquid towards the other end of the tube. the device.
The operation of such an apparatus is very simple and does not require further description. The material to be quenched undergoes an axial displacement in the direction of the arrow while the distribution drum and the distribution chamber are driven by the gear drive,
The advantages obtained with the aid of such an apparatus relate to the homogeneity of the quenching, the quenching fluid is delivered symmetrically in the form of rotating jets and the quenching medium remains symmetrical since the fluid. -
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
of quenching is removed after its first contact with the part to be quenched.
A vapor film, in the case where the quenching fluid is liquid, cannot be produced continuously on the part to be quenched because this film is periodically torn off with a high frequency by the successive impacts of the jets.
The intensity of the quenching can be easily regulated without affecting the regularity of the treatment, by acting on the flow rate of the injection nozzles, on their number for a given operation, or on both at the same time.
It is observed that the treated product is immediately covered with a film of homogeneous and regular soaked material which behaves, subsequently, even in the course of treatment, like a rigid envelope which combats possible deformations.
Such an apparatus can project on the surface of the objects to be quenched a liquid or gaseous fluid of any desired nature,
It goes without saying, moreover, that without departing from the scope of the invention, modifications can be made to the embodiments which have just been described.
