<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

A method is already known, for example from German patent 8020282, for welding plastic tubes to one another. According to the German invention, the ends of the tubes are engaged one in the other, a sheet of metal of annular shape being placed between the ends of the tubes which overlap; in this annular sheet, vortex currents are generated by means of a high frequency field, which produce the temperature necessary for welding.
This process is marred by serious flaws. It first assumes the use of pipes of different dimensions since one pipe must be inserted into the other. To produce the necessary high-frequency field, costly and bulky auxiliary devices are also needed, which are not available everywhere where synthetic tubes have to be assembled.
The process according to the present invention is free from the indicated defects. It makes it possible to assemble tubes of the same dimensions, which is generally a question of practice. The device for carrying out a method which also constitutes an object of the invention is characterized by great simplicity and by a low price.
The work can be carried out in a minimum time. Fatigue tests which have been carried out have shown that the joint has the same tensile strength and the same resistance to pressure inside the pipe as the tubes themselves, or even greater resistance than the tubeso
The method according to the invention is characterized in that the ends of the tubes are engaged around a support body which covers their joints and which centers them relative to each other, the support body having the form of a tube, and in that the joint is then covered with an envelope of heat-conducting material which surrounds the two ends of the tube, which on both sides other of the seal, is shorter than the internal support body,
after which the temperature of the material of the tubes near the joint is raised to a value at which the material becomes at least plastic and fills the joint, the heat being supplied from the outside by the casing which surrounds the tubes.
Of the device according to the invention, there are features which include on the one hand a tube intended to be engaged in the two pipe ends and to center them with respect to one another, on the other hand a casing which is intended to surround the ends of the pipes on either side of the joint and which is shorter than the tube in question and finally a device for heating the outer casing.
Other characteristics of the invention will emerge from the description of an exemplary embodiment shown in the accompanying drawings of a device according to the invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective representation
Figure 2 is a front view of the device, and
Figure 3 is a section along the line III-III of Figure 2,
The ends 4 and 5 of the tubes or pipe to be joined are engaged above a stiff tube 6 such that the latter extends approximately half its length in each of the tubes 4 and 5. The stiff tube 6 thus centers the two ends of pipe 4 and 5 with respect to each other and internally covers their joint 7; the importance of these provisions will be explained in more detail below.
Finally, the outer casing 8-10 of heat-conducting material is slid from one side over the seal 7. This envelope is shorter than the tube 6 and has the shape of a split cylinder 8

along its entire length along a generatrix, the plane flanges 9, respectively 10, of the slot overlapping each other *, -. The flange 9 is preferably a little longer than the flange 10, which facilitates the guiding the flanges relative to each other when the flange is put in place or when, after assembly of the ends of the tubes 4 and 5, it must be removed.
After the casing 8-10 has been put in place, bn passes a screw 11 through a troj in each of the flanges 9 'respectively 10, and a fuel container 12 is attached thereto, the fixing flange 13 of which is of such shape. that, when screwing the nut 14 onto the screw 11 for tightening the casing 8 around the seal 7, the fuel container 12 is brought into the correct position with respect to the other parts of the device.
The fuel container 12 contains a piece of solid fuel 15 (eg, excursion stove fuel), which is preferably glued. The heat produced by the combustion of the piece of fuel is transmitted by the outer casing 8 to the thermoplastic material of the tubes, on either side of the joint. The quantity of fuel is regulated in such a way that the synthetic material succeeds in salifying; for polyethylene, this occurs at around 200 C.
As the inner tube 6 is longer than the outer shell 8, oh prevents permanent deformation of the assembled tubes 4 and 5 even if, as expected, the material of the snorkels is brought during heating in a plastic or liquid state to 'at the edge of the envelope 8.
It is not necessary to heat as long as it would take for the synthetic material to become liquid. Also good and even better results are obtained when the heating is interrupted as soon as the synthetic material has assumed a pasty consistency, which for polyethylene already occurs. to 165-185 c. It can be seen that we have reached this buffer temperature respectively this degree of softening by the fact that the synthetic material tends to press outwards at the advantageously widened edges of the sleeve 8.
After the flame has been blown out, the tube 4 is grabbed with one hand and the tube 5 with the other hand and they are pressed against each other; in doing so, they are advantageously rotated with respect to each other by a few degrees so that the joint is completely filled with the plastic material of the tubes.
The device and tubes are then allowed to cool for some time, after which the screw connection 11-14 and the bushing 8 are removed. The joint is closed and the device can be used again when as needed, after replacing the fuel used.
As the inner tube 6 covers the seal from the inside, and the outer casing or sleeve 8 surrounds the ends of the tubes from the outside, air is substantially prevented from coming into contact with the material of the tubes which is interlocking. found in a plastic or fluid state; this has been found to be very important in order to avoid aging.
As regards the choice of the material of the inner tube 6, it must naturally be quite rigid and that it has sufficient strength to support the tubes during the assembly prooessus. As, at least, for tubes of small diameter, it is not a question of very large stresses, it is generally sufficient a tube of small wall thickness which does not reduce the passage section of the tubes in synthetic material.
It is however possible to constitute the inner tube 6 in a material soluble in the liquida which is called upon to circulate in the pipe constituted by the assembled synthetic masière tubes; in this case, the tube 6 is to some extent expelled from the pipe.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The outer shell 8 should be made of a heat-conducting material resistant to heat up to about 250 ° C., preferably tinplate or copper.
The fuel container 12 has, in the embodiment shown, an inner wall 16 which does not extend to the socket 8. On the contrary, the side walls 17 and 18 of the fuel container have such a shape. that they are connected exactly at the top to the shape of the casing 8. In this way, the flame of the burning fuel 15 cannot come into contact with the plastic tubes but only with the casing 8. A hole in the interior wall 16 and the opening which exists between the upper edge of the interior wall and the casing allow access of air to the interior of the fuel container.
When the device is intended for use in the open air, it is advantageous to shape the front wall 16 so that its upper part extends to the casing 8 and follows the casing. parallel to its highest point o The flame is thus protected by preventing it from being extinguished by the venta In such a case, however, a hole must be made in the rear wall 19 of the receptacle 12 and this hole is preferably a size such that it can be used to pass the piece of fuel through it
