<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Une structure conforme à la présente invention, convenant pour le chargement et le déchargement de navires pétroliers, sera décrite en détail ci-après à titre d'exemple uniquement, avec référence aux dessins annexés, dans lesquels: la fig. 1 est une vue de côté schématique de la structure en position normale de chargement ou de déchargement; la fig. 2 est une vue schématique de face de la structure en position normale de chargement ou de déchargement, mais non raccordée à un navire pétrolier; la fig. 3 est une coupe suivant la ligne A-A de la fig. 2;
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

The present invention relates to improvements to pipelines for the loading and unloading of ships and the like and it aims to provide an improved device for connecting a pipeline laid on the seabed or other body of water. to a ship or equivalent.
It is known to load and unload oil vessels at places where there are no docks or jetties along which the vessel may be moored, using a pipe laid on the bottom. from the sea in sufficiently deep water. The marine end of this pipeline is connected to one or at most two flexible hoses, which normally rest at the bottom of the water.
When an oil tanker is anchored or anchored, it hauls up cables, kept afloat by means of buoys, which are attached
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
to this or these pipes and tan them to the surface to connect them to its own system of pipes.
In such an installation, the necessary long stretches of heavy pipe have to be lifted by devices belonging to the ship itself and the diameter of the pipe that can be used is limited, thus slowing the speed of loading or unloading. In addition, the wear of the flexible hoses used is very high. We have tried to use more than two hoses but without success, because they are twisted.
According to the present invention, there is provided a rigid oblong structure which is fixed at one end to the bottom of the. sea or other body of water so as to be able to pivot around that end and which has one or more floats or float compartments which when filled with air keep the structure in a vertical or nearly vertical position in which the other end of the structure protrudes above the surface of the water, and a device for establishing fluid-tight communication between a vessel or the like and a pipe laid on the seabed.
A structure according to the present invention, suitable for the loading and unloading of oil tankers, will be described in detail below by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: FIG. 1 is a schematic side view of the structure in the normal loading or unloading position; fig. 2 is a schematic front view of the structure in the normal loading or unloading position, but not connected to an oil tanker; fig. 3 is a section taken along the line A-A of FIG. 2;
fig. 4 is a section taken along line B-B of FIG. 2; and FIG. 5 is a schematic side view of the structure lying on the bed of a river, the bottom of a lake or the sea, etc,
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
In the drawings, a pipe 1 laid on the bed 2 of the tithe river, the bottom of a lake or the sea, etc. is connected by flexible or articulated pipes 3, to four rigid pipes 4a, 4b, 4c and 4d which form the main support members of a structure 5, an additional support being provided by a framework 6.
The structure is long enough to protrude significantly from the surface of the water 7 when brought into a vertical or nearly vertical position (figs. 1 and 2) by a float 8 which is attached to it, but is normally lying horizontally. on the bottom 2 as shown in fig. 5. The size of the float 8 is such that this structure can be given a positive buoyancy which greatly exceeds its weight.
Although not essential, it has been found to be highly desirable to place float 8 on structure 5 so that the structure is lifted from the bottom of the water to an upright position in which it is in. a vertical plane forming an angle with the vertical. The arrangement of the float on the structure is such that the structure is brought to this upright position when the float has, for example, half of its maximum positive buoyancy, an increase in the buoyancy not straightening the structure further.
This upright position can thus be considered as a position of maximum possible uprighting of the structure.
By arranging the float in this way, the structure is given a stable equilibrium, such that if it is moved from this position of maximum possible righting, it will always tend to return to it.
In the arrangement shown in the drawings, the structure occupies, when not connected to the vessel, a position of maximum possible righting in which it is in a vertical plane forming an angle of 70 with its position. horizontal (fig. 5) on the bottom of the water. If the structure thus assumes a position of stable equilibrium, it remains very firm when loading and unloading a vessel or the like in bad weather.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
In addition, the structure can be moved away from the vessel or equivalent, so that during loading or unloading the structure is stressed and the risk of the vessel and the structure coming into contact with each other. is materially reduced.
A flexible discharge pipe 10 is connected to the upper end 9 of each pipe 4a, 4b, 4c and 4d and is intended to be connected to an oil tanker indicated at 11 (fig. 1).
Each pipe 10 is provided at its free end with a sealing and coupling device 12 which allows the pipes 10 to be connected to the tanks of the vessel, or if they are not 'connected, to be plugged. The end. lower part of each pipe 4a-d is formed by a sealed extension 13.
The extensions 13 of the pipes 4a and 4b and of the pipes 4c and 4d are welded to fixing blocks 14a and 14b, respectively.
The whole structure is anchored to the bottom 2 by three inclined chains 15 attached to each fixing block. The arrangement of each set of three chains 15 is such that it leaves a certain freedom of movement for each fixing block 14a and 14b, and allows the structure 5 to tilt in a vertical plane around an axis passing through the two. fixing blocks. The arrangement of the chains 15 should also allow considerable play from the top end of the structure in any direction within an almost square area in plan, having sides nearly equal to the length of the structure.
One end of a flexible air pipe 17 is attached to an inlet 16 provided on the upper end (fig. 1 and 2) of the float 8, the other end of the air pipe being held to the surface 7 by a buoy 18. The floating end of the air pipe 17 is provided with an air valve (not shown).
The lower end (figs. 1 and 2) of the float 8 is provided with vents 19 through which the water is expelled. It may be desirable to provide ropes 22 between the vessel and the structure to
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
to maintain the latter and to absorb the tensions which the flexible pipes 10 could undergo in the absence of these cords.
When loading, for example, an oil tanker, ¯ the boat anchors in front of and behind the mooring buoys (not shown) placed along the submerged structure 5 (fig. 5). The floating air tube 17 is pulled out by a boat and connected to an air compressor or a compressed air supply. The compressed air drives the water out of the float 8 through the vents 19, forcing the structure 5 to rise from its normal submerged or horizontal position at the bottom 2 of the water (Fig. 5) to the maximum possible righting position. The upper end 9 of the structure is thus brought well above the surface of the water in a position suitable for fixing the discharge pipes 10 to pipes on the ship connected to the tanks.
Any suitable device, such as a floating hoisting cable (not shown) attached to a yoke 20 (fig. 2) holding the free ends of the pipes 10 together, may be provided to facilitate lifting of the pipes 10 from them. position in dotted lines to their position in solid lines (fig. 1). The free ends of the discharge hoses are connected to the hoses of the ship and then a signal to start loading the ship with oil is sent to a shore-based pumping station. When the required quantity of oil has been loaded onto the tanker, the pumping is stopped, the pipes 10 are disconnected, they are closed and the air valve provided on the end of the air pipe 17 is opened.
The water can thus again enter the float 8 at a regulated speed, causing the structure 5 to descend slowly to its normal position on the bottom where it rests until it is needed again.
Although a preferred embodiment of the structure according to the invention has been described in detail, by way of example only, it is clear that numerous changes and modifications can be made to it without departing from the scope of the invention. present invention.
Although only one float 8 has been shown, it can
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
be desirable to have separate floats or a float divided into two or more compartments. Different shapes can be used for the float (s) .When using two or more of these floats or compartments, it is possible to have some which are still empty of water but which provide insufficient buoyancy to lift the structure. from the bottom of the water. This arrangement speeds up recovery of the structure since a smaller volume of water must be flushed out before buoyancy is achieved.
In addition, always empty floats or compartments may contain air at a pressure sufficient to expel water from other floats or compartments. This arrangement, serving to lift the structure, is achieved by providing a double air duct 17 so that the transfer of air from the float or from the compressed air compartment or other floats or compartments can be controlled by the valve. floating air. The float or compressed air compartment can be recharged regardless of the position of the structure.
The float 8 shown in the drawings surrounds substantially three sides of the structure 5 (Fig. 4). Alternatively, two or four pipes 4a, b, c, d can pass through the float. The height at which the float or float compartments are located on the structure should be such that the float or compartments are covered with approximately five to seven weights of water (1.6 m to 2.3 m) at tide low to avoid disturbances from wave action. On the other hand, the float must be placed as far as possible from the foot of the structure to ensure maximum leverage. In addition to the offset of the float 8 or alternatively, ballast devices, such as weight chains, can be attached to the structure 5 to ensure that it goes down to the bottom of the water in the correct direction.
Likewise, safety chains can be provided, attached to the structure and anchored to the bottom, to prevent the structure from falling against the side of the vessel if the float (s)
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
would burst when the structure is tilted towards the ship.
Instead of providing a floating air hose to empty the. or the floats of their water, .on can use urie air pipe laid next to pipe 1 towards the shore. This air duct is connected to an air duct provided on the structure 5 connected to the float or floats by a flexible air pipe arranged near the flexible pipes 3.
Various other arrangements of the anchor chains may be used and the arrangement adopted in a particular installation may depend on factors such as the strength of the tidal currents and the degree of movement to be allowed at the upper end. of the structure.
Although it is preferable to return the submersible structure to its horizontal position at the bottom of the water after each loading and unloading operation, since this facilitates the anchoring and putting off the vessel or the like and reduces the risk that the structure is deteriorated during a storm etc., when certain local conditions allow the structure to be left constantly upright by its floats. Devices used to empty the floats or to allow water to enter them can be omitted.
In an emergency, when it may be desirable to quickly lower the structure to its normal horizontal position, a quick release air valve can be associated with each float or float compartment, which valve can be opened quickly and easily, for example, by means of a cord arranged at the free ends of the flexible pipes 10.
A ladder can be provided on the structure to facilitate the inspection of the float (s) and the various pipe fittings etc.
