<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
EMI8.1
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>

tall and have the disadvantage of not coming into action if the ambient temperature is too low.
The device according to the invnntion, which overcomes this drawback is mainly characterized by three current branches, the first of which comprises at least a first relay winding and a resistor, the second at least a second relay winding and a resistor. with a negative temperature coefficient and the third a resistor, these branches being connected in such a way that when the movable arm of the relay comprising the said windings is open, a current passes only in the first branch, whereas when this arm is when closed, a current flows through the three branches, the latter being connected in parallel with the input terminals,
the elements of these branches being dimensioned so that when the first winding is energized, the magnetic core of the relay attracts an armature integral with said arm, so that the latter is brought into its closed position, the armature coming into contact with the core under the action of its kinetic energy only after the contacts touch each other, this armature remaining stuck to the core under the effect of remanent magnetism, until the resistance to co-efficient negative temperature allows sufficient current to pass through the second winding of the relay, so that the magnetic flux thus compensates for the remanent magnetism, the armature then being separated from the core by an elastic force urging it, so that the arm returns to its position. - opening tion.

A made the realization of the object of the invention given as a c ...... the no '-' is shown in the accompanying drawing.
The ignition device shown 1 comprises two input terminals 2 and 3 connected to the heating electrodes 4 and 5 of the fluorescent tube 60 Between the switch 8 and the electrode 5 a filter coil 7 is interposed in a known manner made of silk. of the network are designated by 9 and lo, the voltage between these terminals being AC.
The device 1 further comprises a relay 11 with two windings 12 and 13. The magnetic core 14 of the relay 11 acts on the armature 15, the latter being mechanically connected to the arm 16 of the movable contact 17. The armature 15 is mounted from above. preferably directly on the arm 16. The latter is biased by a non-shown spring tending to maintain it in the position in which the contact 17 is open. This arm 16 could also itself consist of a flat spring ,, The winding 12 is connected on the one hand to terminal 2 and on the other hand by a switch 18 normally closed and a resistor 19 of high value with the contact. fixed 20, cooperating with the moving contact 17.
Contact 20 is connected directly to terminal 30
Winding 13 is connected on the one hand to terminal 2 and on the other hand to a resistor 21 with a negative temperature coefficient, this resistor being in electrical and thermal contact with a bimetallic strip 22 in the form of U. This strip 22 is also connected to the arm 16. When this strip heats up, the contact 18 opens.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
A resistor 23 is also mounted between the arm 16 and the terminal 2 parallel to the elements 13, 21 and 22. This resistor is a usual metallic resistor and therefore has a small positive temperature coefficient.
When a current passes, the value of resistor 23 therefore increases slightly, while that of resistor 21 decreases.
When the switch 8 is closed, a current flows through the device 1 in the manner described below, so that the electrodes 4 and 5 of the tube 6 heat up.
After a short interval this current is interrupted. The coil 7 then causes a momentary overvoltage between the electrodes 4, 5 which have become susceptible to emission due to heating, and the tube lights up.
As soon as the mains voltage is applied to terminals 2, 3 following the closing of switch 8, the following happens:
A current passes through the branch 12, 18, 19 causing an attraction of the armature 15 by the core 14, and thus a movement of the arm 16 at the eenconite of the force urging it, so that the contacts 17 and 20 are based on each other. At this moment a current flows in a second branch: 13, 21, 22 as well as in a third: 23.
The vectorial sum of these three currents causes the heating of the electrodes 4, 5 of the tube 6. The impedance of the second branch and that of the third being much smaller than that of the first, these elements 4, 5 and 7 and in particular the latter acting as impedance
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
initial to be interposed for said three current branches connected from then on parallel, the current in the first branch falls to an insufficient value to allow an attraction of the armature 14 sufficient to compensate for the force requesting the arm 16.
This arm nevertheless remains momentarily in its position for closing the contacts 17, 20, since the armature 14 remains stuck to the core 14 due to the kinetic energy received on coming into contact with the core after the contacts 17, 20 rest on each other and due to the remanent magnetism, the contacts 17, 2o are thus strongly applied to each other, the arm 16 being slightly deformed, When these contacts are closed, the current passing through the second branch 13,21,22 is relatively small as long as the resistor 21 is cold, while it is relatively large in the third branch 23. When the resistors 21 and 23 heat up this current increases in the second branch and decreases in the third.
The alternating magnetic flux generated by the winding 13 in the core 14 is initially very faulty.
As a result of the increase in the current passing through this winding, this flux increases up to a positive or negative amplitude, for which the remanent magnetism is exactly compensated, this magnetism being able to be positive or negative. The armature 15 is then no longer retained by the core 14 and the arm 16 opens rapidly under the action of the force urging it, This results in a strong voltage pulse
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
in the coil 7 from the ignition of the tube. The current continuing to flow in the branch 12, 18, 19 is too small to cause an attraction of the armature 15, the voltage at terminals 2,3 noting more that of the network, but the operating voltage of the tube 6 considerably. less than the first.
The switch 18 actuated by the bi-metallic strip 22 serves as a safety device. Suppose that the tube does not ignite, despite normal operation of the ignition device, for example because the electrodes are particularly cold or insufficiently susceptible to emission, in other words, because the tube is out of heat. 'use. In this case the network voltage would be applied again to terminals 2, 3 after opening of arm 16, and the cycle described would be repeated. * Contacts 17 and 2o would come into constant contact with each other. on the other hand, would heat up and become susceptible to emission upon opening of the arm 16, resulting in an arc which could destroy them.
This danger is eliminated in that the strip 22 is heated by the resistor 21, in the event that the tube 6 does not light up so that the switch 18 is opened. The heating of the band 22 is so small that it could be only partially mounted in the second branch, not at all.
The arm 16 is no longer returned to the closed position, when the current is cut in the first branch, the strip 22 must first of all cool down.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
enough for the switch. 18 to close.
In the meantime, the contacts 17, 20, which have not yet been very heated, also cool down, so that several repeated activations cannot cause damage. The ignition device cannot therefore be damaged even if the switch 8 remains constantly closed.
A tube that no longer lights is naturally replaced. If, on the other hand, the reason for the failure was due to the too low temperature of the electrodes 4, 5, they warm up little by little, until ignition is possible.
The device described works flawlessly not only at normal temperatures but also at very low temperatures, at which a discharge relay would never function if the mains voltage were applied to it. The current passing through the first branch and the pull of the armature 15 are practically independent of temperature. The time required for the negative temperature coefficient resistor to pass sufficient current for the remanent magnetism of core 14 to be compensated for, is of course to some extent a function of ambient temperature.
In practice this dependence is rather advantageous, apart from the fact that the dimensions of the resistor 21 are very small, so that its caloric capacity is minimal. If the time interval between the closing of the arm 16 and the moment when the permanent magnetism is compensated, is longer due to a low temperature, this is advantageous, since the electrodes 4, 5 are
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
EMI8.1
crossings longer by the current and the heating medium, than if this interval were constant for any ambient temperature.
The speed at which the arm 16 opens, at the moment when the remanent magnetism is compensated, does not depend on the temperature and is very high in comparison with the speed of the bimetallic strip switches.
The impulse. The voltage in coil 7, due to the sudden interruption of the current in the second and in the third branches is considerable, which is favorable to ignition.
The various elements of the device 1 are preferably mounted so as to form a whole, which can be arranged in the sockets intended for the usual discharge relays or bimetallic strips.
This advantage is valuable over known ignition devices, which also operate at low temperature with more safety than devices comprising a discharge or bimetallic relay. These devices, in fact include elements to be connected to the input circuit of the tube, they have more than two input terminals, because only certain parts of the device are mounted parallel to the tube and not the device. himself. It is thus not possible to replace existing discharge relays with such devices, without additional assembly work.
These devices no longer include safety devices protecting them from destruction in the event that the tube does not ignite. It is also possible to have a capacitor between terminals 2 and 3,
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
in order to avoid radio interference, this capacitor does not affect the operation of the device.
