<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
C =2 à 3;=
Si = 1 à 2,5%
Mn = 0,6 à 1,6

It is known that the addition of magnesium, in the form either of pure metal, or of alloys with other metals such as copper ', nickel -' or with metalloids such as silicon, makes it possible to obtain 'castings of spheroidal graphite cast iron. This spheroidal graphite can be obtained either entirely on solidification or partially on solidification., And partially by conventional annealing as practiced in the malleability of black-core cast iron.
The moldings show, after graphitization annealing, few graphite spherules, numerous (30 to 300 per mm 2), quite coarse and often irregular.
The mechanical characteristics of metals having this structure are much lower than those of diffuse graphite cast irons which were the subject of prior patents in the name of the present applicant.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The invention relates to the heat treatment of completely white cast iron compositions for diffuse graphite (completely free of solidifying graphite) by a three-step process comprising a martensitic (or, if necessary, bainitic quenching) followed by a tempering with germination of the graphite followed by graphitization at a higher temperature.
According to the present invention, it has in fact turned out that it has been possible to obtain castings of cast iron having improved qualities and comprising infinitely numerous and fine graphite spherules, within limits never encountered previously, approximately 3,000 to 30,000 per mm2, these castings containing magnesium or alkali or alkaline earth metals or metals of the rare earth group incorporated alone or as a mixture, either simultaneously or successively.
The compositions of these cast irons are poorer in carbon and silicon than the usual compositions of known spheroidal graphite cast irons; they vary according to the thickness of the parts to be formed, the nature of the molds, the method of casting and the result to be obtained.
According to a first characteristic of the invention, the compositions of these cast irons are included within the following limits:
C = 2 to 3; =
Si = 1 to 2.5%
Mn = 0.6 to 1.6
Cu or Ni = 0 to 2 il
Al or Ti = 0 to 0.15%

magnesium can be made 2Vc..ntê ::. ceusent blur -or¯ne of copper-magnesium alloy. There is no inoculation of the graphite by the. silicon, unlike spheroidal graphite solidifying cast irons.
'According to another characteristic of the invention, these castings, cast white in core sand, green sand, or in metal shells with or without pressure, or by centrifugation, essentially undergo a thermal treatment cycle in order to obtain a very high number of graphite seeds according to known methods.
This heat treatment cycle includes: a) A preliminary quenching, after austenization at a temperature slightly higher than that of the eutectoid transformation carried out with water or oil, or molten salt, so that the quenching structure is obtained without causing stains in the molding. b) A germination temper at a moderate temperature, generally around 450 and lasting from 1 to 48 hours. c) Reheating of graphitization carried out at high temperature and of sufficient duration, these two parameters being defined as a function of the composition, of the casting mode, and of the thickness of the molding.
One can, for example, anneal at 880 for 1 to 4 hours depending on the case, which is considerably faster in the case of malleable cast irons.
Between the germination income and the graphitization reheating, cooling may or may not be carried out, depending on the operating convenience.
By this treatment process applied to cast irons of the compositions specified above, an entirely new material is obtained, with fine graphite spherules.
