<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

PRESSURE SHELL CAST IRON.
In the patent issued on February 18, 1952 under provisional n.623.957, the Applicant Company described a process which makes it possible to industrially obtain high-strength cast iron with nodular or spheroidal graphite from parts of ordinary thickness molded in sand and with white structure (cementite structure). She discovered that these treatments are greatly facilitated, that is to say, are carried out much faster and give a much finer structure, the graphite being in very fine grains and very numerous, when the solidification of the cast iron is made. in shell. However, such a manufacturing process is doomed to failure as a result of the blowholes, sinkers and especially micro-sinkers that occur in the shell molding of the cast iron.
It is known, on the other hand, that die-casting, applicable to fusible alloys of zinc, aluminum, magnesium and copper, does not apply to steels mainly due to the alterability of liquid steel in the process. waiting furnace and the difficulty of making metal shells resistant to the action of the metal jet at very high temperature.
It is also known that the die-casting of cast iron has not been carried out to date, due to the impossibility in which it was found to obtain high mechanical characteristics, or because the cast iron is at Lamellar graphite which transmits neither extension stresses, nor shear stresses, either because the cast iron has extremely fragile cementite dendrites.
The Applicant has discovered that the combination of the shell casting, pressure casting and graphitization processes with seed pre-treatment made it possible to combine their qualities without giving rise to their defects; this combination leads industrially to new products of high quality, high productivity of series parts, precise
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
sion and good surface condition of the castings, high tenacity of the cast iron, regularity of manufacture.
In fact, the casting of shell cast iron under pressure is greatly facilitated, in comparison with steel, by the great stability of the metal bath in the waiting furnace, by the lowering of the casting temperature, by the considerable attenuation of the effects of hot erosion on the shell.
We thus manage to cast the white cast iron without micro-shrinkage or blowholes, thanks to the pressure exerted during solidification. Cracks are avoided by unmoulding just after the end of solidification.
Thanks to the shell casting, the cast iron can be relatively loaded with silicon which lowers the casting temperature while maintaining a white structure to the parts in the as-cast state; it is thus possible to greatly exceed the usual contents of malleable cast irons, and to reach values of between 1.5 and 2%. Likewise, higher carbon contents of 2.6 to 3% may be accepted for the same reasons.
In order to obtain the optimum effect, it is preferable, according to the invention, to preferably employ copper melts without this being absolutely necessary. The copper acts both as a flowability improving element, as a germinating agent for graphite and as an addition element for heat treatment quenching and tempering.
In order for the process to give its full effect, it is appropriate, according to the invention, to carry out the triple treatment of quenching - germination - graphitization. The quenching treatment can be obtained from the heat of molding, by demolding quite hot, above 810, and direct quenching in a salt bath, for example at 1800/1 min., Then cooling in still air, resulting in a hardened shell casting without the risk of cracking or splitting. If the molding contains thin parts which have cooled too much, it can, immediately after demolding, be immersed in a stabilization bath at 810 one minute after being soaked in salt at 180.
The molding is then subjected to the germination treatment, for example 48 hours. at 4500, then with or without intermediate cooling, the molding is subjected to the graphitization of the primary cementite; for the graphitization to be complete, a holding time of 2 to 6 h. is required at 875, but this time can be reduced to between 40 min. t two hours by annealing at 900 The following table gives the numbers N per mm of fine graphite spherules with an average diameter of 2 to 6 microns obtained by this process. In these tests, the shell casting was 14mm. thick; the demoulding was done at more than 820 and the part was directly soaked in salt at 180.
The annealing included a first cycle: 48 h. at 450, and a second: 3 h. to 875.

But for the process to reach its full efficiency, it is preferable to allow the part to cool when leaving the matrix and to reheat it for austenization at 810/50 min. for example, and stepped quenching, at 1800/1 min. for example. The moldings are then subjected to the germination treatment, for example 48 h.

This is also what the following table shows, which gives the number of graphite spherules per mm2, these having a diameter less than 2 microns:

In all cases, the quantity of cementite is zero, so that annealing for 1 hour at 875 is sufficient.

After this treatment, a piece of cast 2162 was reheated to 835, quenched in 1-oil, returned to 700; it then gives: E = 80 R = 82 A = 2.5% on a 4 mm machined specimen. of diameter.
It is also possible, after this latter tempering to 700, to stop it by quenching in oil and to tempering for 2 hours at 500 in order to cause the structural hardening of the copper.
Finally, the compositions and properties of these cast irons can be modified by alloying elements such as: Ni, Mo, Ti, Al, Zr, etc. Machinability, after graphitization with or without quenching and tempering, is particularly easy thanks to graphite.
