<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

The present invention relates to a stuffing box comprising a seal or ring having a U-shaped section, having a thin cylindrical part in contact with the movable member (for example piston or piston rod, or shaft) and lips or raised side branches which tapering from the inside to the outside, to give them a certain flexibility, the said ring being tightened on the said movable member, by means of a fluid under passion.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The diameter of the coin in contact with the gold. movable gane is smaller (by a few tenths of a millimeter for example) than the diameter of the movable member on which it is mounted, so as to leave a small clearance between them when. fluid under pressure is not applied.
The ring is placed in a closed chamber and the pressurized fluid introduced into this chamber deforms the ring and applies it to the two walls of the chamber and to the movable member, thus ensuring perfect sealing.
Compared with known cable glands, the cable gland according to the invention has the following advantages:
The U-shaped ring can be made of any material, elastic or not, by simple machining or molding.
Sealing on all sides is automatic and requires neither prior tightening nor re-tightening.
Small odds errors are acceptable.
A material that is inelastic and even exhibits significant creep, such as Teflon, can be used to produce the gland since the tightening is constantly maintained by the fluid under pressure.
The replacement of a seal is very simple and can be carried out by any staff, the chamber returning to its original dimensions - after reassembly.
The pressurized fluid supply is independent of the U-ring and does not have to be dismantled when replacing the latter.
An embodiment of a cable gland provided with a seal according to the invention has been described below simply by way of nonlimiting example.

annexes, mounted on a piston pump.
The seal comprises a cylindrical face 1 made of vinyl compound (for example of a material known in the trade under the name of TEFLON) with a diameter slightly greater than that of the piston 2 or similar member to which the seal is applied. It also comprises two lateral parts la-lb f adorning with part 1 a ring having in cross section the shape of a U. These lateral parts tapering off from the inside to the outside.
This seal is held between a head 3 a cup 4 and it is surrounded by an annular body 5. This body comprises a duct 6 connected by a connection to a source of pressurized fluid, for example compressed air * The action of the fluid under pressure has the effect of ensuring the seal on its three faces.
It can be seen that effective tightening of the seal is thus obtained without creeping out of the material constituting the latter.
The head 3 has valves 7 and a cover 8.
The nut 9 of the cup 4- itself comprises a leakage tube 10.
