<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

The object of the present invention is to improve the sealed assemblies of dita automatic pipes characterized by their jointing which results from the simple interlocking of the pipes under the action of an axial thrust in their common axis by the effect of a torus in rubber that rolls flattening between the two concentric pipes to form a joint between them.
We know that in assemblies of this kind, the torus is placed under elastic tension on the end of the smooth end prior to the introduction of the latter into the interlocking tulip, to come, during this introduction, to meet
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
a frustoconical ramp which determines its progressive rolling up to the annular sealing chamber where it stabilizes to form a flat seal which is also annular.
Since the tightness of this seal depends on the regularity of this flattening, it is extremely important that the elastic torus is not affected, before its rolling, by irregular tensions capable of producing its distortion during this rolling. Great care is taken in this regard in its prior arrangement on the smooth end, in particular by the use of a kind of tapered wooden shoe tree extending said smooth end and on which it rolls gently under the careful control of the 'operator. This expedient is an embarrassment and a waste of time on the job site.
It is also known that the seal in place is liable to move back towards the orifice through which it was introduced, if an overpressure of the channeled fluid occurs in service which will cause it to slide backwards, or an axial movement tending to separating the hoses will cause it to roll back. To obviate this risk, a ring is placed on the smooth end which should serve as a stop for the seal in both cases, but it is obvious that it is' ineffective in the second, because this stop is hidden in front of the seal of the even causes the smooth end which carries it to move back itself.
Finally, care is also taken to ensure the rigidity of the co-axial fitting of the pipes by making them penetrate deeply because their angular deflection would have the effect of crushing on the one hand, loosening the joint on the other hand. annular flat to the detriment of the seal. This deep penetration corresponds to a very significant loss of useful length for the piping, the supply price of which is correspondingly affected.
The invention resolves these difficulties and overcomes these drawbacks.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Indeed, and according to a characteristic of the invention, the torus instead of being stretched over the end of the smooth end, is inserted freely into an anterior fold of the fitting tulip; - ment, in front of the frustoconical ramp of this one. It is thus in a state of relaxation / perfect when the end of the smooth end penetrating into the tulip comes to approach it to drag it by rolling under the tapered ramp.
Another characteristic of the invention consists in the fact that the anterior fold of the tulip determines a wide external funnel which receives the smooth end and guides it towards the encasement with an extremely small clearance which facilitates its co-axial centering. Due to the smallness of this clearance, the depth of the fitting, intended to ensure the axial rigidity of the assembly, can be very considerably reduced, which correspondingly reduces the loss of useful length for the piping.
According to another characteristic of the invention, the stop of the seal, instead of being fixed on the smooth end with the aforementioned drawback, is formed by the internal edge of the tulip itself, which effectively opposes the recoil, either slippery or rolling of the joint *
In the accompanying drawing, which shows schematically and simply by way of example an embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 is a longitudinal half-sectional view of the assembly before it is joined, Figure 2 is a same view after jointing, FIG. 3 is still the same view, but with a variant of the shape of the joint.
According to the exemplary embodiment shown, it can be seen that the rubber torus 1 is placed on standby inside the tulip 2 between its front edge and the ramp 3. In this position, the elastic torus is in perfect relaxation. When the smooth end 4 moves forward, it meets the funnel 5 of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
tulip which guides it and helps to its centering through the very weak play 6. The smooth end abuts against the torus whose inner diameter is smaller than its own, so that it drives this torus by rolling friction, under the tapered ramp 3.
By this movement, the torus gradually rolls and flows by creep through the constriction 1 to the annular chamber 8 called sealing where it expands to continue to roll concentrically to this chamber, to finally come to stabilize flat, in position and shape 9.
The path traveled by the smooth end being a little greater than double that of the center of the shape of the seal, said smooth end penetrates with a very small clearance into the fitting neck 10 at the bottom of which it abuts. The rigidity of this assembly results from the games. also weak formed between the smooth end and its two suitably distant staves, namely, the interlocking neck 10 and the orifice 6 of the tulip.
According to another characteristic of the invention, the accidental expulsion of the seal in the two possible cases in service: by its sliding recoil under the action of an overpressure of the fluid or by its rolling recoil under the effect of the shrinkage. axial of the smooth end, is thwarted by the constriction 7 which constitutes the internal edge of the tulip and by which the seal is trapped.
In the alternative embodiment shown in FIG. 3, the seal after having crossed the constriction 7 encounters a new ramp 11 which forces it to take a frustoconical force 12, so that it only offers the channeled fluid a very small contact surface, an arrangement which can suitable when it is desired to minimize the effects, for example of a chemical nature, of this contact.
