<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
EMI5.1
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

It is known that it is possible to produce alloys by melting all the different constituents together and to achieve, by refrigeration, the desired use properties / by resorting, if necessary, to specific heat treatments.
Likewise, the. Metallurgical powder fabrication has been used for the synthesis of alloys, in the sense that full advantage has been taken of the ability of the metal atom to cross lattice reactions below the point
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
fusion. These procedures involve the application of higher or lower temperatures which can give rise to both material losses and the absorption of impurities from the material used for the crucible. In addition, sometimes significant differences can arise in the case of greater differences in boiling or melting points of the constituents.
Subsequently, it has been known that at comparatively very low temperatures it is also possible to prepare alloys from components with a high boiling point and having regard to their melting point. and significantly different boiling, when the intermediate use of mercury was claimed. Thus, alloys can be obtained by electrolysis of solutions of mixtures of salts on a mercury cathode and subsequent removal of the mercury by evaporation, when, by application of suitable measures, the composition of the electrolyte remains constant, relative to the temperature. concentration of the metal salts used and of the hydrogen ions as well as in the solvent.
As these conditions cannot always be satisfied, it has been found to undertake the synthesis of metallurgical amalgam alloys by mixing binary amalgams with each other and to produce the desired alloy by removing mercury at using an appropriate operation. Therefore, depending on the constitution of each of the systems in question and the concentration of metals used, the amalgams can be either homogenously liquid, or heterogeneously in the form of slurry and paste, or solid. In the case of liquid amalgams, these are real solutions of metal alloys in mercury, for example Zinc amalgams with 2% Zn at room temperature or tin amalgams. similar to 0.6% tin.
On the other hand, in the case of amal games in the form of porridge or paste, types of crystals

solids, in reality either mercury compounds or elementary metals, are suspended in more or less pure mercury. Amalgams of copper, nickel and manganese belong, for example, to the first group of mercury compounds; amalgams of iron, cobalt and chromium, for example, belong to the second group of suspensions of non-amalgamated metals. The solubility of the metals mentioned in mercury is, moreover, extraordinarily low.
Appropriate tests also showed that the phases in suspension in amalgams of copper, nickel and manganese dissociate into mercury and corresponding elementary metals, at a well determined temperature, located more or less very below the point of boiling mercury These decomposition temperatures are for copper amalgam of 100 C, for nickel amalgam of 225 0 and for manganese amalgam of 280 C.
If binary amalgams are mixed together, changes are observed in many cases, even at room temperature. Such reactions, however, only take place when a constituent of the alloy has a greater solubility in mercury; However, sometimes they are carried out slowly and often incompletely at ambient temperature, so that one is forced to seek working conditions which do not lead to these disadvantages.
Very frequently, it is also desired to produce alloys between metals which are substantially insoluble in mercury; this is referred to as the technically and so extraordinarily important group of iron-nickel-chromium alloys. [However, in these cases, no alloy formation usually occurs at room temperature.
Surprisingly, it has been established that such alloys, the constituents of which are almost or completely embedded in mercury, are formed very quickly and
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
completely in mercury, when the quantities of amalgam are heated to a temperature which is equal to or higher than the dissociation temperature of the most stable binary amalgam. In addition, it has been found that it is not sufficient to bring the different binary amalgams in themselves to their dissociation temperature, therefore without prior mixing, and only then to mix them with one another, given that, in this case, in particular no formation of alloys occurs.
In accordance with the. In the present invention, alloys suspended in mercury have been produced by mixing amalgams at temperatures well below their melting point, because the amalgam mixtures are heated to a temperature which is equal to or higher than the dissociation temperature of the thermally most stable compound of mercury.
Detailed explanations of this object will be taken from the following examples:
Amalgams of the metals of iron and copper can be produced either by electrolytic separation from a corresponding salt solution, against a mercury cathode, or by a transformation of these salt solutions with a non-noble amalgam. , like sodium amalgam, by the phase exchange. In order to eliminate by separation the differences in concentration in the amalgams @ and in order to guarantee a constant composition, very important for a dosage, in the whole of the amalgam, it is recommended to remove the liquid phase by extraction. by pressure or centrifugation as long as the amalgam affects a consistency similar to putty.
During the tests discussed below, the amalgams of the following compositions were treated:
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
EMI5.1
'tAmalgam of nickel: A- e 5 l' Ni Amalgam of manganese: 5,3 Hn Amalgam of chromium: 4,. ", -; Cr Amalgam of copper 14, 4 / Cu 1. If a mixture of amalgams is heated of copper and nickel at a temperature which is between the dissociation temperatures of the two mercury compounds, only elemental copper is formed, in suspension in the mercury, which however does not react with the mercury-nickel compound. On the other hand, if the temperature is raised until it reaches the dissociation temperature of the nickel-mercury compound, the formation of alloys results in a shorter time. The crystals of the copper-nickel alloy are immediately suspended in the mercury.
Alloy formation does not occur when the copper amalgam and the nickel amalgam are heated separately at
225 C or above and are only then mixed with each other.
Example of execution:
A mixture of 100 kgs of copper amalgam and 320 kgs of nickel amalgam, with the addition of about 500 kgs of mercury, is brought to a temperature of 250 C; during this process, the amalgam is kept in constant motion using a mechanical stirrer. After a reaction time of 2 to 5 minutes, the liquid phase is removed by. pressure extraction and the mercury, separated by distillation from the residue which contains about 50% less mercury than the sum of the starting amalgam. By this method, 28.8 kgs of a 50% nickel copper-nickel alloy are obtained.
2. These same immutable facts are also observed during the heating of mixtures of amalgam of copper and manganese. The binary alloy in question free from mercury
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
is only obtained at 280 C.
Example of execution:
A mixture of 100 kgs of copper amalgam and 130 kgs of amalgam is produced using the method described above. Me of manganese with the addition of 300 kgs of mercury, the mixture is heated to 300 and the mercury remaining is separated by distillation from the residue obtained after extraction by pressure of the excess mercury. The result is an amount of 21.3 kg of a 32%% manganese copper-manganese alloy. This alloy can be used as a pre-alloy for special brasses and has, by the proper selection of the temperature of the heat treatment, in the presence of the like melting alloy, the advantage of being able to be crushed a lot. easier. As a result, dosing is facilitated when preparing special brasses.
3. Under the same conditions, nickel-chromium alloys can also be produced.
Example of execution:
By heating a mixture of 100 kgs of nickel amalgam and 25.5 kgs of chromium amalgam at 250 and removing the mercury by pressure extraction and separation by distillation, 6.6 kgs of the alloy are obtained. Oekas for hot conductor at 80 nickel and 20 chrome.
4. Likewise, alloy formation also occurs in mixtures of nickel and manganese amalgam, only when the temperature reaches the dissociation temperature of the manganese amalgam (280).
5. Iron-nickel and cobalt-nickel alloys are formed in mercury only when the nickel-meride compound decomposes into elemental mercury and nickel, so above 225 0.
Example of execution:
If a mixture of 100 kgs of iron amelgame and 100 kgs of nickel amelgame and 300 kgs of mercury is treated with
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
heat for a few minutes at 250 ° C. and the liquid phase is extracted by pressure, 9.7 kgs of an iron-nickel alloy containing 45.3 nickel are obtained, after separation by distillation of the remaining mercury. Alloys of similar composition have acquired importance in the art as remelting alloys in glasses.
6. The same changes also occur when heating mixtures in which more than two binary amalgams take part. For example, iron-chromium-nickel and iron-cobalt-nickel alloys of desired composition can be obtained when such amalgam mixtures are heated at or above the decomposition temperature of the nickel-mercury compound.
Example of execution:
If we react a mixture of 100 kgs of iron amalgam,
28, kgs of chromium amalgam and 12.4 kgs of nickel amalgam. In the presence of 300 kgs of mercury, at a temperature of 250, and if the residue obtained by pressure extraction is subjected to the distillation process, it is obtains 7 kgs of steel with 18% chromium and 8% nickel. This alloy is known to be one of the most important corrosion resistant steels used in chemical engineering.
The transformations which take place during the thermal decomposition of mercury compounds proceed rapidly and this, as tests demonstrate, until the equilibrium corresponding to the temperature of dissociation of the gas is reached. the most stable mercury compound.
After the resulting transformation, the mercury can be removed in a considerable way and in a known manner, either by centrifugation or pressure extraction. The remaining residues, determined by the decomposition of the mercury compounds, contain consistently and significantly less mercury than the amalgams before the reaction. Thus the process
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
of mercury distillation, to be applied perhaps additionally, is shortened and the process made less expensive.
When mixing amalgams, it turns out to be particularly advantageous to operate with an excess of mercury since as a result a uniform and easy mixing of the amalgams is guaranteed.
Thus, an excess of mercury, ranging from about twice to 1 pair, appears to be the best excess amount. Mixing of the amalgams is expediently undertaken with a suitable mechanical stirrer and also continues during the heat treatment.
The process according to the invention allows, among other things, the production of alloy powders free from metal-loids or ferromagnetic powders having particular properties.
