<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>
<Desc/Clms Page number 13>
trait interrompu.
<Desc/Clms Page number 14>
<Desc/Clms Page number 15>
<Desc/Clms Page number 16>
<Desc/Clms Page number 17>
<Desc / Clms Page number 1>
The present invention relates generally to the exploitation of mines and, more particularly, to new and improved methods and apparatuses of coal exploitation and, more particularly still, to the progressive exploitation. and intermittent @ coal.
Various mining machines have already been made which serve to cut down and remove coal without the aid of the well-known chopper which is generally used to cut from below the working face which is then cut down by drilling and blasting to load it up and take it to the surface.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Some recently commissioned machines, operating intermittently, use a cutter bar which cuts the coal on a part of the working face which is then cut down by means of vibrating picks actuated by hammers, 1-e coal falling on a conveyor who takes him. This type of machine works in alternating cycles of cutting a specific part of the face of the coal, then working with vibrating picks which cut down the coal immediately above the cutting and make it fall to the top of the seam to that the carbon is removed from this part of the working face. The machine is then brought into a section close to the working face until the coal is removed over the entire face of the stope to a determined depth.
The size of the charcoal removed by the picks of this type of machine is an undetermined factor depending on the cleavage of the charcoal and ordinary chopping problems always arise from the use of the chopping bar. In addition to the obligation to remove dust, it is difficult to regulate the coal as it loosens and scatters on the ground and other loading devices and a crew are required. cleaning. For cutting a great deal of power is required for the work accomplished.
Another type of intermittent machine uses a battery of cutting bars whose chains are arranged in parallel vertical planes located a few centimeters from each other. This battery of bars or head is moved in a vertical plane and it is made to advance in a section of the working face in the vicinity of its base.
When the cutting bars have penetrated their entire
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
working depth, they are lifted to cut the coal, lying above until the teeth of these bars have removed all the coal up to the roof, from the seam in the chosen section of the working face.
The peaks or teeth of these bars come together and penetrate the coal from the bottom and back along the top dragging loose coal to a conveyor which away from the working face. With this machine, it is still difficult to catch all the coal when it comes loose and the bar grinds the coal into fine and giving a considerable amount of dust. This type of machine also requires a large amount of force for the work being done.
The present invention overcomes the various difficulties presented by the above processes and intermittent machines and relates to a process and apparatus which greatly improve the production of coal without giving this large proportion of fines and dust and it is necessary R elatively less power to fell and remove the same amount of coal at the same time. The charcoal is removed by trimming and rotating overlapping concentric grooves and the protrusions between them, leaving the wall clean.
The present invention relates to a method and apparatus in which, at the same time, the coal is cut, preferably by planing, to remove it to a determined depth and loaded into a series of sections of the front. size until all of it has been tapped, after which we move forward to make the series
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
following cuts.
The cutting is preferably effected by means of rotating planing heads, having widely spaced teeth, progressively receding in the direction of the axis and joined by sharp surfaces towards the rear. These cutting heads are mounted in the rear. quadrangular relation, the heads of the same height operating in opposite directions to bring the coal laterally between the heads where it is loaded on a conveyor in order to remove it from the working face.
The quadrangular arrangement of the pruning heads allows them to work as a unit that can be rotated on a vertical axis at the front of the machine and the whole unit advances to successively cut sections of the coal when the unit rotates from side to side. When the various sections of the coal have been removed and the unit has moved back, the machine is advanced to the new exposed cutting face and stopped to allow the cutting unit to remove another set of sections. successive steps on the working face before moving the machine forward again.
The upper size heads are vertically movable with respect to the lower heads so as to increase the dimension of the unit with the height of the coal seam, but when the upper heads are fully lowered, the size dimension of the unit may be made so that there is vertical and horizontal clearance for the machine. So if the size unit is kept in line with the machine, it can
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
operate as a continuous operating machine by moving the cutting unit and the whole machine by successive advances or by advancing by propulsion of the machine alone.
In order to advance intermittently only the cutting unit in the coal and keep the front of the conveyor on this unit, whatever its position, it is preferable to use a conveyor capable of lateral articulation, as well as to lengthen or shorten with the size unit, without stopping its operation. This is an important object of the invention and is achieved with sections of the conveyor capable of pivoting with variable recovery between the ends of the return leg of the conveyor.
This improvement also allows the conveyor, at the ends of the machine, to articulate laterally to load the coal and bring it to receiving devices located on either side or to rotate the coal. rear towards an entrance, when the machine cuts a location arranged obliquely in relation to it.
Other objects and advantages will become apparent from the description below and from the claims.

The mining machine, shown in Figures 1 to 3, comprises a carriage 10 carried by two caterpillars 11 actuated by toothed wheels 12 at the rear of the carriage and passing over idler wheels 13 at the front. . Between these wheels 12 and 13, the upper strands of the tracks 11 are supported by idler rollers 14 rotating on the carriage 10 and the lower strands bear on rollers 15, also carried by the carriage 10 and supporting it directly by means of the tracks 11, giving continuous support over the entire length of the tracks.
The machine carriage 10 is made of two sturdy side flanges 16 and 17, connected at the front and at the rear by cross members 18 and 19 in the form of boxes, at the bottom by the floor 20 and at the top by recovery 21.
The motor 22 (Figures la and 1b), which is preferably a variable speed direct current motor, actuates the hydraulic pump 23, the control levers of which are placed at the rear and on one side of the motor. cart, in box 24 (Figures 2b and 3b), but they are not shown in detail. The hydraulic pump 23 provides all the power necessary to advance and steer the machine, raise, lower and turn the heads of
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
waist at the front of the machine and operate and rotate the conveyor.
Hydraulic motors. traction devices 25 are placed on each side of the carriage, in the vicinity of their respective toothed wheels 12 and they are independently controlled in order to ensure a possibility of complete maneuvering in the direction and in forward and reverse gears.
The flanges 16 and 17 extend to the front of the cross member 18 and they are provided with paths 26 and 27 facing inward (figures'la, 3a and 5) serving to receive the slides 40 and 41 of the base or circular platform 28, able to move vertically.
Cross member 18 has two sets of projecting consoles
31, at a distance from each other, with openings in alignment serving to receive pins 32 carried by double-acting hydraulic cylinders 33 and 34, the pistons of which are coupled to one end of oscillating arms 35 and
36 mounted on the shaft. 37 carried by the flanges 16 and 17.
These oscillating arms are connected by connecting rods 38 and 39 to the slides 40 and 41 of the circular platform 28, so as to raise or lower the latter in the slides.
26 and 27. The platform 28 carries the table 42 rotating on it and held in place by a split crown 42 '.
Table 42 carries the entire system of heads moving circularly in front of the machine frame. Arms
43 and 44, arranged horizontally, slide in slides 45 and 46 of the table 42. On the latter, between these slides, there is a double-acting hydraulic cylinder 47, the piston 48 of which extends forward as far as 'to an eye 50 held by the pin 51, passing through
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
spaced ears 52. These ears and the front ends of the arms 43 and 44 are fixed to the transverse plate 53, the ends of which carry the vertical slides 54 and 55.
The part 53 is provided with vertical uprights 56 and 57 on which pivot the eyes 58 and 59 of the ends of the cables 60 and 61 coming from this part 53 and passing over the pulleys 62 and 63 rotating on the front ends of the pivoting cylinders 64 and 65. on the opposite sides of the flanges 16 and 17. At the rear of the cylinders 64 and 65 come out the pistons 64a and 65 .a whose outer ends carry pulleys over which pass the cables 60 and 61 which return to their respective cylinders and their ends are fixed to the frame. Each of cylinders 64 and 65 is double acting and is controlled such that one piston moves forward while the other moves back.
In this way, the part 53 can rotate with the table 42 in an arc of about @@, regardless of the forward or back position or the ascent or descent of the platform 28.
Plate 53 is integral with lower gearbox 66 and, in the: vertical slides 54 and 55, renting ages 67 and 68 attached to and moving with the upper gearbox 70. The lower box 66 goes up or down with the platform 28 and the upper box also moves with it, but it can be moved away from the lower box by means of jacks 71 mounted on the sides of the lower box, their pistons coming to bear on ears 72 of the upper box.
A hydraulic motor 73 is actuated, by appropriate transmissions, from the pump 23 and is attached
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
at the rear of the upper box 70. The motor 73 actuated the shaft 74 and the pinion 75 which it carries at one end actuates the toothed wheel 76, the hub of which has a splined opening through which passes a vertical shaft 77 having complementary grooves (figure 3a). In FIG. 1a, the shaft 77 is shown as comprising two worm screw pins. 1-; pinion 78 for the lease ..: upper and. the pinion 79 for the lower box. Each of them is engaged with a worm 80 or 81.
These screws are carried by horizontal shafts carrying spur gears 82 meshing with the toothed wheels 83 of four shafts 84, 85, 86 and. 87, of quadrangular heads, the upper shafts being able to move away from the lower shafts. Thus, the hydraulic motor 73 actuates the four shafts via its reduction gear and the upper box can be lifted by the cylinder 71 relative to the lower box, without interrupting the control by means of the splined shaft 77. .
Each of the shafts of the heads carries a pruning head comprising a central pilot mGche with double toothing ot a series of wicks arranged obliquely and radially while receding towards the rear, each comprising two of which: 3 and. being removable so that it can be replaced. Preferably, the lower heads advance more than the upper heads and the first bit of the radial series is disposed on the side opposite to the shaft, so as to ensure a certain balancing of the head.
The outer niches of the lower heads advance a little more than the corresponding ugly upper heads, as can be seen in figure 1a. Only four shafts with heads are foreseen in this quadrangular arrangement, but we can add
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
additional trees and heads in horizontal or vertical rows, which are preferably added so as to maintain the quadrangular arrangement of the pruning heads.
At the rear of the upper heads, on each of the shafts 84 and 85, is fixed an eccentric disc. These eccentric discs are identical; they are mounted on the upper shafts 84 and 85 and rotate with them in opposite directions; they have circular tracks serving to receive the slotted plates 88 and 69 which rotate in opposite directions and are in phase relation of 180 one compared to each other. These plates have in-line bushings to receive the sliding link bar 90 which prevents the plates from rotating, but allows them to rotate in opposite directions in their separate orbits determined by the eccentrics on which they are mounted.
Each of the plates carries a series of three teeth 91 and the plate 89 carries a second series of upper teeth 92.
When the plates turn, when their shafts turn, the upper and lateral sets of teeth move on small circular paths represented by the dotted circles in figure 4 and the different teeth cut out the protrusions left between the notches made by their heads. neighbors. This gyratory cutting action exerts only a very low load on the rotating shafts,
while easily removing the carbon protrusions and is a very important object of the invention. By changing the size of the eccentric, we. can determine how much of the protrusion is removed.

The lower gearbox 66 carries projecting arms 93 and 94, directed downwards and forwards, joined at their lower edges by a horizontal plate 95 forming a pocket. On the sloping front edges of arms 93 and 94 are attached blades 96. Lane 96 carries knife 97 along its lower edge which extends below horizontal plate 95 and beyond the ends of box 66 .
The pocket 98, formed by the spaced arms 93 and 94 and the plates attached thereto, receives the front end of the chain conveyor 99 which is fixed in this pocket. This carrier is made of four sections. The front section was fixed in the pocket 96 and it pivots on the second section 102 at a point 101 located below the center of the circular part 28, The second section the): 'telescope in the third 103 which rises; rearward to the top of the machine. The fourth section 104 pivots 90, 45 on either side of its central position.
Each of the conveyor sections has an age-shaped lower surface 105 for the return end of the chain 99 and a trough-shaped upper surface 106 supported the loaded end of the chain. The sidewalls 107 and 106 of the trough extend substantially above the upper surface 106 to prevent the coal from falling as it comes rearward from the pruning heads. The rotation of the conveyor on the pivot 101 allows the front section to rotate horizontal with the pruning head and the telescoping of the second section 102 into the third 103 allows the first two sections to move forward and backward with the system. heads.
The carrier
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
is hinged on the top of the chosen one of the machine when lifting or lowering the size unit in relation to the body of the machine. Each of the surfaces of the conveyor 106 and 105 carrying the load and return legs of the different sections of the conveyor overlaps in the direction of travel in order to prevent the chain or its cross members from catching thereon.
As can be seen in Figures II ?, 2b and 3b the load and return strands of the conveyor move away and give the edges in arcs 109 and 110 whose centers are on the pivots 111 and 112 fixed relative to the body of the machine and on which the arms 113 and 114 rotate which support the fourth section 104 of the conveyor to allow it to describe an arc. The upper and lower surfaces 106 and 105 of this section have complementary arc edges lying below and above the respective arc edges 109 and 110.
The fourth, rotating tail section 104 carries the shaft 115 which can turn thereon and actuated at each end by hydraulic motors 116 and 117. A large spigot 118 surrounds the shaft to guide the chain 99 which is operated by the chain. 'shaft by means of the tooth wheel 119,
Between the ends of the body, the return end of the chain 99 passes over the idler wheel 120, descends around the idler roller 121, then back onto the idler wheel 122, to go from there to the 'front of the uachine. The return roller 121 rotates on the end of the piston 123 which exits the double acting cylinder 124.
This piston is prevented from turning and it pushes the chain of the @ sportsman worm,. down to the position shown in
<Desc / Clms Page number 13>
dashed line. As the conveyor heads rotate, the effective length of chain 99 increases. As the pruning head system advances, the chain should also be longer. The force exerted to rotate the tail of the conveyor or the pruning heads or to advance the system forward is sufficient to overcome the pressure exerted by the piston 123 and to reverse the latter, as shown in the figure. 1b.
On the other hand, when the tail and the heads are straightened and move back, the pressure of the piston 123 takes up the return end of the chain by fully developing the latter in the position indicated by the dashed line m.
The tail section 104 is rotated like the size t @, es. As seen in Figure 3b, the cylinders 125 and 126 are mounted on either side of the third section 103 and their pistons move towards the front of the machine.
On the outer ends of the pistons 127 and 128 rotate the pulleys 129 and 130 and on the rear ends of the cylinders likewise rotate the pulleys 131 ot 132. The arched surface of the intermediate section 103 has protruding ears 133 and 134 at the ends. from the angled edge 109. on these ears, turn the pulleys 135 and 136.
The three pulleys on each side of the machine carry cables 137 and 138 .. The front ends of these cables are fixed on the frame carrying the cylinders, retort this is indicated at 139, and 140. These cables go to the front turn on the pulleys of their respective pistons, they return backwards between the cylinders and the trins- carrier to go on the pulleys located at the rear of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 14>
cylinders, they go from there on pulleys 135 and 136 placed:
on the sides of the section 104 where they are fixed on the consoles 139 and 140. The hydraulic cylinders 125 and 126 are actuated by analogous controls and in a manner analogous to what has been said in the subject of cylinders 64 and 65, which pushes the piston 127 while moving the piston 128 back at the same time and by the same amount, rotating the section 104 around the pins 111 and 112.
The sides 141 and 142 of the conveyor are fixed relative to the pivoting section 104, but they are only attached to the intermediate section 103 near the center of the stiffening plates 143 and 144. Thus, the sides of the conveyor move on. plate 145 bearing the arched top. The cross chain strands engage the small radius wall of the flexed sides of the conveyor, thereby guiding the chain and dragging the coal onto the inclined conveyor.
The lower box 66 is provided with flexible ears 146 and 147 projecting outwards, the edges of which closely follow the outer marginal notches of the lower size heads so as to collect the pieces of coal which would not have been brought back sideways. on the carrier by the pruning heads. These ears are articulated so that they fold back towards the heads when the latter recede.
In operation of the machine, the cutting heads arranged in a rectangle are brought to the cutting face. Circular piece 28 is raised or lowered by means of cylinders 33 and 34 so that the lower row of heads cuts down the coal at the bottom of the vein. The row
<Desc / Clms Page number 15>
top of sized heads is then placed relative to the bottom row so as to knock down the top of the vein to be tapped. The head system is then preferably rotated to the right by contracting the cylinder 64 and lengthening the cylinder 65. All the heads are then rotated and the whole system is then made to advance on the slides 45 and 46 by means of the hydraulic advancing cylinder 47, the piston 48 of which comes out at a selected speed, suitable for exploiting coal.
The rotating heads continuing to advance exploit the entire vein and the side rotating bits 91 and upper bits 92 remove the protrusions between the notches. When the piston 48 has reached the end of its stroke, it recedes rapidly and the turntable rotates to the left to make a second cut in the working face. Consecutive cuts made by oscillating the cutting heads sideways on the cutting face preferably overlap each other in much the same way as the vertical row of the head system.
When making cuts on the face of one side of the tunnel to the back or open side of the system, protection must be provided to prevent the coal from settling on the ground. Folding baffles can be seen at 148 and 149, the first being folded up when the heads cut from right to left and the second 149 is developed to stop the coal and keep it within reach of the heads.
These baffles extend over the entire height of the head system as seen in Figures 1a, 2a and a and are provided with a section 150, pivoting by means of a hinge 151 on the arched section 152. This hinge 151 is
<Desc / Clms Page number 16>
locked in position open by the sliding screws located at the back of the bites. The seetioi; arsuée 152 is articulated at 154 on the spaced ribs-133.
These articulations 154 are locked in the open position by the sliding screws 156. When the baffles are linked these baffles are locked by the hooks 157 '
After making the first cut in the face, the baffle which is from the rear or open ce'3 of the heads is unfolded and locked in the open position until the system has reached its extreme position of lateral rotation.
The tracks then move the machine forward to bring the recessed heads closer to the working face to allow them to advance back into the vein by making consecutive cuts as the head system rotates intermittently side to side. 'other * Intermittent advance f' *; the machine after each lateral oscillation of the heads and intermittent inaction of progressive lateral cuts in the coal, up to the limit of displacement of the piston 48, leaves a tunnel whose sides are mainly a series of steps. These steps leave room for workers when the machine passes and they also provide protection for the props used to support the roof.
By advancing the machine in the center of the tunnel and swinging the heads at the plot limit of the arc displacement of the turntable, the dimension of. drilled tunnel is noticeably larger than that of the machine. Well, you can put them side by side at the back of the machine and you can rotate the tail of the transporter to fill them alternately.
