<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

The obtained para-diisopropylbenzene is useful as a solvent or as an intermediate crude product for the preparation of para-dihydroxybensene (hydroquinone) by the so-called hydroperoxide process. One of its most important uses, however, is as an intermediate for the preparation of terephthalic acid.
Industrially one is faced with the problem of producing high purity diisopropylbenzene in an economical manner.
The reaction of benzene or alkylbenzenes with propylene, in the presence of an alkylation catalyst such as aluminum chloride, is known to give mixtures of the various possible substitute derivatives, as well as the various possible isomers; a particular problem relating to the preparation of polyisopropylbenzenes involves both the preparation of the diisopropyl compound and also the preparation and recovery of the para isomer in economical yields.
The findings associated with the invention and the solution of the above problem, as well as the objects achieved in accordance with the invention, as set forth herein, include the following: the preparation of cumene by reaction. tion of benzene with propylene or polyisopropylbenzenes in the presence of an acid reacting alkylation catalyst, such as aluminum chloride or other Friedel-Crafts type catalyst under equilibrium conditions to obtain a maximum cumene yield, the separation from the latter of a fraction containing a major proportion of cumene or, if desired, the separation therefrom of substantially pure cumene,

over a period of 2 hours, while stirring, while maintaining the temperature in the range of about 70 to 100 C, the feed rate being about 75 liters per hour at temperature and ordinary pressure.
This temperature can be maintained either by passing cooling water through the indirect heat exchange medium, or by allowing the mixture to boil and reflowing its condensate if the temperature tends to rise too high, or by passing water vapor through this medium if the temperature tends to drop too low.
Or, one can replace the propylene and part of the benzene by an equivalent quantity of poly-isopropylbenzè @
The reaction mixture is cooled to room temperature, and the lower mud catalyst phase is separated from the upper hydrocarbon phase, and can be recycled to the reactor if desired. i.e. the upper hydrocarbon phase, is charged into a reactor similar to that mentioned above, in the proportions of

Comparable or interesting results are obtained with various modifications of the foregoing, in particular the following. The catalyst can be any alkylation catalyst with an acid reaction., Preferably of the Fricdel-Crafts type such as aluminum chleride, acid Hydrofluoric acid or boo trifluoride Where all the advantages of such catalysts are not required, other substances such as sulfuric acid or phosphoric acid can be used.
In the first stage, or cumene preparation stage, the ratio of propylene to benzene should be in the range of about 0.7 to about 1.5 moles per mole of benzene, including the equivalent of propylene and benzene in the recycled polyisopropylbenzenes advantageously from 0.9 to 1.12 and preferably from about 1.1.
In the second stage, or non-equilibrium reaction stage, the propylene: cumene ratio may be in the range. from about 0.8 to about 1.5, preferably from 0.9 to about 1.3, and preferably from about 1.1 moles of propylene per mole of cumene. In this second stage of reaction, the reaction is stopped before reaching equilibrium. To facilitate this, a relatively low concentration of catalyst or lower reaction rate conditions are used. In the first stage, the concentration of catalyst is sufficient to give a mixture substantially to equilibrium when the addition of propylene or propylbenzene is complete, and in general this concentration is in the range of about 2 to 5% catalyst based on the weight of the product prepared.
In the second stage, or non-equilibrium stage, the amount of catalyst is only about 1/10 to 3/10 of that used in the first stage, or stage mentioned above.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
The reaction temperature can be in the range of -80 to 150 C, preferably 50 to 110 C for the aluminum chloride employed as a catalyst. The reaction time can be in the range of 0.1 to 10 hours, preferably 0.5 to 4 hours. High temperatures are bothered. usually associated with shorter times; the catalyst and the conditions of temperature and time are chosen to give the desired conversion at the desired production rates.
Additional aluminum chloride can be added as needed (which is for example determined by an on-site control alkylation reaction, in which a sample of the slurry is used as catalyst which is recycled, in order to know its catalytic activity). The spent catalyst is treated with water containing 15-30% hydrochloric acid in order to break up the catalyst complex, and the resulting hydrocarbon phase is separated and reused in the system.
It is truly surprising that the process of the invention can be carried out in such a convenient manner, with high conversions, to give a practically theoretical yield of the desired product.
On reading the foregoing data, certain variations and modifications of the invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art; it is desired to include in the invention all such variations and modifications, except those which do not come within the scope of the appended claims.
