<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>

The present invention relates to the packaging of soft plastic food and to a method for packaging a soft plastic food in a pouch made of a deformable film or sheet.
It has already been proposed to mold, transport and distribute soft plastic foods in reversible pockets formed of a thin and flexible film. The present invention relates to another embodiment and to an improvement of this type of packaging structure, as well as to an improved method of packaging and distributing soft plastic foods.
When forming soft plastic food packages using reversible pouches of the kind specified above, especially when decorative patterns are printed in the walls of the pouch, it is preferred not to provide the pouch with a support of corresponding shape. Because of the high degree of flexibility required to make them reversible, unsupported film pouches are also deformable and do not remain in an upright position under the weight of bodies or food blocks. soft plastic lying in these pockets. Therefore, as described above, it is desirable to provide a relatively rigid support disposed around the pocket and supporting the latter around its mouth or opening, the rest of the pocket being located at a certain distance from the support. .
On the other hand, it has been found desirable to ensure that the bottom of the pouch does not contact any support surface, in particular a sur- face.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
face not conforming to that of the bottom of the pocket, when the bottom of the pocket is provided with a printed decorative pattern.
In the commercial distribution of soft plastic food packaging with reversible pouches supported as described above, a problem has arisen due to the tendency of the pouches to break or tear at their bottom. . Since the pockets are formed by extruding or stretching a thermoplastic film or film into a die, the thinnest and, therefore, the weakest part of the pocket is from the bottom thereof, at the bottom. and! right where the film thickness has been reduced to the greatest extent by the stretching operation.
Although, under the usual handling conditions, these bags have sufficient strength to support the weight of bodies or blocks of soft plastic food, it has been found, under certain conditions of severe handling, that tears or breaks have occurred. can occur in the walls, in particular towards the lower parts of the pockets. Thus, this can happen, when a box containing this type of soft plastic packaging accidentally falls on a hard surface, which produces a sharp shock, which is communicated to the body or block of soft plastic food suspended in the pocket, so much so that this body suddenly tends to push the bottom of the pocket down.
A general object of the present invention is a packaging for soft plastic food and a method for packaging such food in a deformable pouch, this packaging providing a satisfactory solution to the problem set out above. More particular-
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
ment, the present invention relates to a packaging for soft plastic food, in which the tendency of. reversible pockets without support to break under extremely severe handling conditions is avoided without simultaneous limitation of the kinds of patterns that can be applied to the walls of the pocket and without making it more difficult or more expensive to pass from one pattern to another.
As already indicated, the invention relates to a packaging of soft plastic food of the type in which a reversible pouch, devoid of support or support, and constituted by a thin and flexible film, such as a bag. thermoplastic film, is disposed in a hollow tubular support, so that the upper marginal part of the pocket is in contact with the upper edge of the support, a body or block of soft plastic food being placed in the pocket and conforming to the shape of the latter.
More specifically, the invention relates to an improvement of a packaging for soft plastic food of the type described, this improvement being characterized in that the pocket has at its bottom a generally flat zone lying substantially in the same. plane as the lower edge of the carrier, so that when the lower edge of the carrier is placed on a flat carrier surface, the flat bottom area of the pocket will also be in contact with the surface and will be supported by it.
Specific embodiments of the invention will now be described by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: - Figure 1 is a perspective view of the main elements of a structure container
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
according to the invention, the various elements being separate; FIG. 2 is a vertical section showing the elements of the container of FIG. 1 assembled, as they appear when the bag is filled with a soft plastic food; FIG. 3 is a perspective view of a complete packaging assembly showing the filled container or inner packaging partially removed from the outer cardboard box;
- Figure 4 is a vertical section of the en. appears to be fully packed, showing the inner packaging as housed in the outer cardboard box; FIG. 5 is a perspective view showing how the block or body of soft plastic food is dispensed from the bag; FIG. 6 is a perspective view showing how the block or body of soft plastic food is dispensed from a modified packaging structure, in which the upper part of the pouch is glued to the tubular support. , and FIG. 7 is a vertical section showing the modified packaging structure of FIG. 6 as it appears before the removal of the closure film or film, the packaging resting on a flat horizontal surface.
Turning first to Figure 4 of the drawings, there is shown a soft plastic food packaging assembly, comprising an outer carton box 10 containing a unitary inner food packaging generally designated by benchmark notation Il. The inner packaging 11 consists of a
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
support 12 extending vertically and with open ends, - a reversible pocket 13 formed of a thin and flexible thermoplastic film, and of a covering or covering film 14 of thermpolastic material
As shown in figure 4,
the section of the pocket 13 generally decreases inwards and downwards from its opening and this pocket has at its bottom a part 13a extending horizontally and generally flat. The pocket 13 also has an upper peripheral part or the annular part 13b, which rests on the upper edge of the tubular support 12. In the embodiment illustrated, the lip 13b is not attached to the support 12 and is freely therefrom. separable. However, the lip 13b can be glued to the upper edge of the holder 12, as shown in the modified packaging structure of Figures 6 and 7.
As illustrated in Figure 4, the bottom portion 13a is preferably located, substantially in the same plane as the lower edge of the support 12, as, when the package 11 is placed in a vertical position on a surface of flat horizontal support, its part 13a will be in contact with this surface and will be supported by the latter. Thus, in the complete packaging assembly of FIG. 4, the bottom 13a of the pouch contacts the flat bottom 10a of the cardboard box 10 and is supported by this bottom 10a. In practice, the container may first be formed of a ring 12 and a film pocket 13, as shown in figure 1. These elements are assembled as illustrated in figure 2.
The deformable film pocket is then filled with a soft plastic food, as illustrated in figure 2. To this end,
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
the pocket is placed on a flat horizontal support surface, such as surface 16, so that the portion 13a forming the bottom of the pocket rests on the support surface. At the same time, the pocket 13 is supported at its upper part or pressed around its opening, for example by pressing the leter 13b of the pocket on the upper edge of the support 12. All

After the filling operation, a covering or closure film 14 can be applied to the opening of the pouch and sealed thereto. so as to form a unitary package, as illustrated in FIG. 3. The filled pouch can then be placed in a cardboard box, such as the one designated by 10, having a flat bottom, such as the bottom 10a, of so that the part 13a of the pocket is brought into contact with the bottom of the cardboard box, so that the pocket continues to be supported around its opening by contact with the upper part of the support 12. The appearance of the complete packaging assembly is illustrated more clearly in Figure 4.
With the packaging structure just described, most of the weight of the food block or body in the pouch is supported by the flat bottom portion of the pouch. insi, as shown in FIG. 4, the weight of the food body B is essentially supported by the flat part 13a of the pouch, which is in turn supported by the flat bottom 10a of the cardboard box 10. The main purpose of
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
The contact of the lip 13b of the pocket with the upper end of the support 12 in this construction is to support the pocket around its opening and to prevent the pocket from sagging or deforming.
Thus, the planar lower part 13a and the peripheral part 13b cooperate so as to support the food body B. It has been found that this arrangement gives a greatly reduced tendency to break the pouch, as a result of An impact or shock produced when the package assembly is dropped onto a hard surface. The flat portion 13a of the pocket acts, in fact, as a shock absorber, without allowing undue stresses to be applied to the thin bottom area of the pocket.
When it is desired to dispense or remove the food block or body from its packaging, this can be done as illustrated in Figure 5. For this purpose, the inner packaging is removed from the cardboard box 10, then the cover sheet 14 is removed and the packaging is inverted. After removal of the ring 12, the bag is gradually inverted, so as to eject the body of food. If desired, pocket inversion can be favored by pressing down on the bottom of the pocket with the fingers or thumb of one hand, while lifting the lip 13b with the thumb. / and the fingers of the other hand, as shown in figure 5.
The flat part 13a of the bottom of the pocket has a further advantage in this respect, in that it constitutes a suitable surface to be pressed down with the fingers,

The packaging and the method according to the invention are particularly suitable for use with bags of the type described, which are furthermore characterized by the fact that the walls of the bags including the horizontal parts of the bottom thereof have - try decorative patterns in relief.
Thus, the pocket 13 is illustrated as having arcuate corrugations curved inwardly around the perimeter of the lower part of the side wall of the pocket 13, as shown at 18, an overlying groove 19 being surmounted by a series of arched bosses 20 extending in a vertical direction. The lower part 13a of the pocket also preferably has a decorative relief pattern, as illustrated. However, it is preferred that the pattern of the lower portion of the pouch has a series of closely related points in all directions of the pattern extending substantially in the same plane as the lower edge of the support, these points preferably constituting. , the outer points of the pattern.
The desired arrangement is most clearly shown in Figures 2 and 4 of the drawings, where it is seen that the pattern has along the line of cut a series of clutches, which are in contact with the contact surface and are thus. substantially in the same plane as the lower edge of the support. 12. FIG. 5 shows the whole of the motivates the lower part 13a of the pocket.
One of the surprising results obtained by the packaging structure according to the invention resides in the fact that the flat lower part of the pocket can effectively support the weight of the body or food block in the pocket, while printing a pattern. in relief on the part of the food body with which it
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
is in contact. This is especially surprising, when one considers that the pockets according to the invention, in order to be reversible, have a maximum thickness, preferably not exceeding 0.003 inches.
The zone of maximum thickness will be around the top or opening of the pocket, when, as is preferred, the pockets are formed from a thermoplastic film of uniform thickness, while the lower parts of the pocket will be considerably less thick. For example, a pocket stretched or formed from a thermoplastic film having a thickness of 0.002 inch may have a thickness of only 0.0005 inch at its bottom. Prior to the present invention, it would certainly not be expected that a thermoplastic film of a thickness of the order of 0.0005 / inch would support the weight of a soft plastic food body in the same way. illustrated.
As already described, in the packaging structure according to the present invention, it is preferred that the pouch is not attached to the support 12 and is freely separable from the latter. This presents a particular advantage in the illustrated embodiment, in which the annular lip 13b rests on the upper edge of the support ring 12. The free contact of the lip 13b with the upper edge of the support 12 allows. causes the lip to slide slightly relative to the support under severe handling conditions, while remaining normally in contact with the support, so as to provide the function of supporting the pocket around its opening and so as to prevent the latter from sagging or deforming.
In other words, when the lip, 13b is not attached to the upper edge of the support 12, the weight of the food body is more reduced.
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
completely transferred to the lower part or fana 13a ae the pocket, thanks to the permitted flexion and relative movement of the lip 13b. This has been found to tend to reduce the tendency for the top of the pouch walls to break when the package is subjected to or is otherwise subjected to an impact such as to project the weight of the body or food block downward. against the sides of the pocket.
Figures 6 and 7 illustrate a variant of the previously described packaging structure. In this variant, as shown more clearly in FIG. 7, the annular lip 13b is glued to the upper edge of the support 12, as indicated at 15. This arrangement may be desired for certain uses. When the upper part of the bag is thus glued to the support, it is used to promote the ejection of the food block by the overturning of the bag with the food block, as illustrated in figure 6. Figure 7 also illustrates how the lower portion 13a of the pouch contacts a flat horizontal surface on which the soft plastic food package rests.
Although any thin, flexible thermoplastic film can be used to form the reversible food-containing pouches employed in packages according to the present invention, certain particular films are preferred, such as chloride copolymer films. -polyvinyl acetate or ethylene glycol terephthalate films.
@although, in the previous description; the invention has been described in its application to a specific preferred embodiment, those skilled in the art will understand that the invention is susceptible of other
