<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

The present invention relates to a process for the manufacture of tubes from a strip metal 3 and is particularly aimed at the manufacture of tubes in the case where. this band is moved in the direction of its. lengthon forms it in the form of tube with facss in contact and one joins these faces by a bonding metal brought to the molten state.
We made many tubes of this type from * - a steel strip by joining the surfaces in contact with copper. The main aim of the invention is to provide
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
a method of making tubes from bare tape, thereby eliminating the need to apply the bond metal to the tape in the form of a coating or film. According to the invention, the bond metal is introduced into the tube in the form of a strip or wire, and the tube is then subjected to a heat treatment to melt the bond metal. The main difficulty experienced is that the tube thus formed, which has a round cross section, is twisted around its axis.
This twist appears to be due to different conditions of the metal with respect to relative hardness and softness and the various stresses established in the metal. It follows that the joint directed in the direction of the length of the tube changes position.
When the strip or wire of the bonding material is melted, it descends by gravity to the lower part of the tube and, if the seal is found there, the bonding metal flows between the faces in contact with them. reunite during its solidification. However, if the tube is twisted so that the seal is displaced upward from the bottom of the tube, in parts of the length the molten metal cannot flow between the contacting faces.
According to the invention, it is strong. the tube in an inverted manner so that the seal is normally in the lowest position, and furthermore it is given a non-circular shape in cross section to be able to guide and hold it in a position in which the seal is. in the lowermost part-33 of the tube so that molten metal can flow between the contact faces. Preferably, the tuba thus formed is shaped in an inverted position so that it presents, an elongated shape is cut through the shape of which the major axis is sensitive.

After bonding the faces and making contact, the tuba is previously subjected to a treatment intended to give it a transverse cut of a substantially circular shape.

The shaping train can be in any classic tY.Q3, but its rollers are zorgcl so as to give the band a hollow shape in cross section. The darniars pebbles of the train are represented in 15 and 13 and we see in fig. 3 that the mandrel has an elongated cross section and that the rollers 15 and 16 are provided with a groove so as to form or envelop the metal of the band giving it in cross section an elongated form. As the tube advances into the heating zone, it is heated by electrical resistance to a temperature suitable for melting the bond metal. The molten bond metal descends by gravity to the bottom of the elongated tube and, as the seal is held at the lowermost part, the metal flows between the contacting faces.
. The molten metal quickly crosses the whole of the contact zone between the layers, thus flowing over an arc of 360 by capillary effect The metal does not flow away from the surfaces in contact which cut the outer surface - laughter of the tuba at edge 17, since the capillarity space breaks at this point.

conformation and da assembly of arronidssage, Fig. 7 shows at 50 a furnace through which a series of tubes can be passed simultaneously. This furnace is suitably heated to raise the temperature of the tubes and cause the copper they contain to melt. As the snorkels leave the furnace they pass through cooler tubes 53 and from there onto a support 54 after they have been cooled sufficiently to be able to be introduced into the atmosphere without undergoing harmful oxidation. admit into the furnace through a pipe 55 a gas, non-oxidizing, or reducing, which can escape from the inlet of the furnace and the outlet of the cooler.
The furnace has a / pipe / guide 56 for each tube (Fig. 8). This pipe has in cross section an elongated shape so as to be able to adapt more or less closely to the tube. In the implementation of the invention with the aid of the furnace 50, the shaping train is separated from the furnace and the tubes which emerge from this train are formed rapidly and cut into sections. A series of tubas are passed simultaneously through the furnace 50 which they pass through at a much slower rate than that at which they are formed by the shaping train, but simultaneously passing a series of tubes through the tube. furnace, the overall flow rate of the furnace can be made to correspond substantially to that of the shaping train.
After the snorkels have taken out of the oven and have been cooled, they can be passed through the rounding assembly 44, which in this case does not, of course, need to be in the alignment of the shaping train.
In any case, the elongated cross-sectional tube can be easily maintained so that the seal is kept in the lowest position. As the copper strip or wire melts, it can access the contacting faces at the point where said faces
