<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

Communication technology tends to. reduce to. minimum the volume of the constructive elements in order to obtain thereby a reduction in the volume of communication devices and, in addition, a reduction in price and material savings,
In many cases, considerable results have been obtained in reducing the volume of construction elements, for example, in the manufacture of tubes, by making miniature tubes, or transients or coils of ferrite, etc.
on the other hand, the technique of capacitors has not reached the point of being able to have such constructive elements at a reduced volume and very often capacitors occupy a much larger place in the apparatus or other constructed elements.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
important tifs. such as for example transitors. If, for example, the volume of a transitor is about 1.5 cm3, the volume of the capacitors presents, in the most favorable cases, a multiple of this value, namely about 4 to 5 cm3. As a result, it is at present impossible to exploit the advantages from the point of view of the location of transients compared to electronic tubes, which greatly delays technical development in this field.
This unfavorable volume ratio exists, although the comparison is made with electrolytic capacitors which are the most favorable from the point of view of occupied space.
Efforts are not lacking aimed at improving this unfavorable ratio of the volume of the capacitors compared to that of the other construction elements; thus, attempts have been made to carry out electrolytic capacitors in which the valve metal is constituted by tantalum, instead of aluminum. Although the volume is reduced by the use of this rare metal tantalum, it is not possible to achieve great progress with tantalum. The tantalum is a very difficult to obtain and extremely hard to machine sheet metal and therefore not very suitable for mass production.
To this we must add a very important fact, namely that the electrolyte in tantalum capacitors is constituted by lithium chloride. therefore an electrolyte which contains chlorine anion which is excessively dangerous for electrolytic capacitors and which, when the valve metal consists of aluminum, causes heavy corrosion and poor insulation. Therefore, a factory which manufactures tantalum capacitors should not manufacture aluminum electrolytic capacitors, since it is inevitable that chlorine will be fed to other sections of the factory. To this must be added the very high price of the rqre metal which tantalum constitutes in comparison with that of aluminum.
We also tried to obtain a reduction in volume by
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
using rough sheets of aluminum, however the usual construction such as the embedding of a casting, the central fixing with screws, etc., does not allow to avoid a determined limit of necessary space. This appears troublesome especially in capacitors which are to be used for service where transients are the base capacitors and with low voltage coupling capacitors.
The built-in dead space, that is to say the space which is not used for the winding in the capacitors, very often exceeds the space required for the winding itself.
The invention aims to produce very small electrolytic capacitors with the usual means in the art of electrolytic capacitors, which makes it possible to save material while simplifying assembly. In association with the capacitors according to the invention, it is therefore possible to exploit the favorable small volumes of the other building elements described above, for example transitors, and thus to produce smaller and less communication devices. expensive.
However, it is proved that the usual means used in the art of electrolytic capacitors are not sufficient to realize capacitors of reduced dimensions and present. at the same time, sufficient electrical qualities, given that the contact between the capacitor coatings and the shunts, for example the shells serving for the shunt of the cathode, present instabilities which are manifested under the form of intermittent contacts in apparatus, For example. this is the case in cases where the cathode foil is in contact with the casing so that the cathode branch strip is pushed over the casing, between the insulating base, often a threaded base, placed on the ledge provided in the wall of the enclosure. and the rim itself.
The constant security here depends on the elasticity of the rubber which provides the etanoheity of the capacitor and the contacting depends on the resistance to
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
aging of sealing rubber. Experience teaches that the cause of frequent contact defects is here to be looked for.
The difficulty of making perfect contact between the casing and the capacitor also increases with the reduction in the diameter of the winding. As a result, it has been proposed, for example, to obtain the bringing into contact between the casing and the cathode of the winding of the capacitor by several edges provided in the casing. This contacting is lacking in the case of small diameter windings, since the winding applied to the rim cannot form the necessary counter-pali: r.
Even if the winding has a diameter of 12.5 mm. contact safety: is called into question and when the diameters are smaller. it is impossible.
According to the invention, in order to eliminate the technical drawbacks described and more particularly in the case of electrolytic capacitors of small dimensions, a winding mandrel is used, preferably consisting of a profiled aluminum part. , square and roughened and which remains in the winding of the capacitor; by playing the role of the anode, this mandrel also forms the branch to the outside and carries a small weldable metal wire. for example a copper wire, which is pressed into the aluminum part.
Or one uses a winding wound on a profiled mandrel, for example of square cross section and this mandrel remains in the winding and serves directly as a bypass for the anode which is guided outwards by means of a weldable metal wire. , pressed into the mandrel. Only this profiled mandrel. remaining in the winding during fitting, gives, in a known manner, the possibility of obtaining a certain contacting * between the cathode and the casing .. and this, by means of a rim, even if the winding has only a small diameter.
This has another advantage, namely that a certain contacting is obtained even with a
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
only winding of the winding, given that the mandrel remaining in the winding finds a sufficient counter-bearing on the flange.
The tightness of the condenser is obtained by a rubber part which is slipped like a pipe on a part of the mandrel. According to the invention, in order to prevent the mandrel or the winding itself from escaping, the capacitor is covered with a simple perforated cardboard plate and is closed in a known manner by the folding of the casing.
In the case of capacitors with a particularly small diameter, this plate simultaneously serves to isolate the anode from the envelope which forms the negative blade of the capacitor,
Thanks to the invention, the dimensions of the capacitors are reduced to such an extent that it is possible to neglect the special supports for the capacitors during assembly. The capacitors are used in flywheel assembly, following an expression used for this purpose.
Two embodiments, given by way of non-limiting example, are shown in the accompanying drawings, in which the shapes of execution follow the figures. 1 and 2 are shown in section on a larger scale, while Figs. 3 and 4 represent a full-scale view of said embodiments.
In the electrolytic capacitors according to fig. 1, / this is an execution for low voltages, necessary for transients as basic capacitors, For this purpose a capacitance of 1 to 3 microfaradr is required for a working voltage of 1.5 Y. According to the invention, the capacitors obtained have a diameter of 4 mm and a length of about 13 mm.
The capacitor according to fig. 1 is executed so that the anode is formed by a roughened piece of aluminum forming the mandrel 1 of the winding. At one of the ends, the mandrel is provided with a hole made in the axial direction, into which the copper wire 6 is introduced; at this point the mandrel is compressed so as to become thinner and the copper wire is compressed.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
mean this narrowing. The constriction of the mandrel is covered by a rubber part 3. The dimensions of the rubber part are such that the latter is stretched from all sides. Thus we obtain a set formed by parts 1, 3 and 6.
After joining the metal casing 2 to a weld lug 7, by means of a rivet 8, this assembly is embedded in the casing. Between the mandrel and the casing is wound a paper insert 9 impregnated with electrolyte, the said insert also serving as a contact protection. Now an insulating plate 5 is applied and the casing is rolled up at 4 in a known manner.
According to the invention, the bringing into contact between the casing and the weld ear can also be carried out so that the bottom of the casing is thickened and reduced at the place where the rivet 8 is located so that it is possible to provide a hole at this location and which serves to receive a metal wire, such as in 1 and 6; The contact being obtained by compression, the inner face of the casing 2 can be roughened in order to increase the capacitance of the capacitor.
In the execution according to fig. 2, it is a capacitor for 5 microfarads with a working voltage of 25 V. This capacitor has a diameter of 10 mm and a length of 15 mm.
The essential difference with respect to the execution of the pin 1 lies in the fact that 1 represents the winding, the first winding of which is connected by welding or riveting to the profiled mandrel 11 serving simultaneously as a bypass of the anode. The wrapping comprises two roughened sheets of which one, the anode, is formed, while the other, the cathode, is not * In a known manner, paper impregnated with an electrolyte based on

During the execution of the winding, in opposition to what is known, one proceeds so that the winding does not start
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
not with the cathode, but with the anode. In an advantageous development of the invention, the winding is carried out so that one first or two windings are wound up, then the paper is interposed and, afterwards, another winding. the cathode.
At the end of the winding there is at least one winding of more cathode foil than anode foil. Then the winding, with the profiled mandrel, is inserted into the casing so that as opposed to the multiple flanges provided in the known embodiments, the certain electrical contacting between the outer layer of the winding and the casing is obtained by the profiled mandrel remaining in the winding, forming a counter bearing. by means of a single point of annular compression, for example a non-elastic metal wire surrounding the winding and embedded in a slightly conical envelope or by means of a single rim marked under 10 in fig 2.
In order to prevent accidental contact between the winding and the casing, for example by the anode sheet escaping during the winding, a strip of paper impregnated with electrolyte is inserted at 9, completely like winding.
The invention is particularly characterized by the fact that the volume of the capacitors is reduced so as to be equal to or less than that of the transients and other numerous structural elements.
