<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
Dès lors, sans aucune condition restrictive, un mode d'exé- cution est décrit avec plus de détails ci-aprés;en en férant aux dessins annexés dans lesquels : la figure 1 est une vue perspective d'un récipient cylin- drique équipé conformément à l'invention; . la figure 2 est une coupe radiale à échelle agrandie par le moyen de fixation, respectivement d'articulation de l'anse conforme à l'invention; la figure 3 est une vue en plan d'un récipient conforme l'invention; les figures 4 et 5 représentent en plan deux exécutions d'un élément de fixation, respectivement d'articulation, de l'anse applicable dans l'exécution des figures 1 à 3 ; la figure 6 représente en vue de face une variante d'exé- cution;
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

In general, the handles of metal containers and in particular metal cans are generally fixed by hooking their two free ends into appropriate devices fixed at two diametrically opposed points of the body of the container or at two diametrically points. opposites of the peripheral edge of said container body.
Whatever the means used in this general design, said fastening means are disposed externally with respect to the generally cylindrical envelope constituting the actual body of the container. The handle thus hooked, respectively articulated, normally rests against said container body.
Given the increasing demands for the
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
safety of additional packaging means and in particular packaging made of relatively vulnerable material, such as cardboard from which bundles grouping a certain number of such cans are made, it is considered necessary to look for means making it possible to protect said cardboard wraps against the dangerous stresses of the fastening elements of the handles projecting on the outer enclosure of the container and, conversely, the traditional fastening elements of the handles are liable to be themselves deformed, respectively put out of use, or as a result of dangerous stresses, or as a result of catching.
The object of the invention is a new method of fixing, respectively of articulation, handles for metal packaging of all kinds and more especially cylindrical cans with partially fitted cover but nevertheless capable of being adapted for any application. similar.
According to the invention, the fixing elements, respectively of articulation, of the handle are arranged in the plane of the rim of the container, so as to be practically inscribed in the largest circle of space of said container, said container. attachment elements, respectively articulation, being of a minimum bulk and practically without any protruding part.
In a preferred embodiment, each attachment element, respectively of articulation of the handle, is presented under; the shape of a part having, in plan, a curved shape concentric with the cross section of the metal container and, in cross section
Vertical, a U-shape, one branch of which is extended and bent so as to be able to wrap, respectively hang, the corresponding part of the crimping of the upper ring bordering the metal container.
The U-shape of said hooking part, respectively of articulation of the handle, is conditioned so as to come to fit in the corresponding part of said ring bordering the upper part of said metal container and adjacent to the
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
upper edge of the body of said metal container. The second branch of said U-shaped portion comprises an orifice possibly extended in the intermediate branch for the passage of the corresponding straightened end of the handle.
The latter, because of this new and very particular method of fixing, respectively of articulation, can present a curvature concentric with that of the body of the container and a radius such that the handle can be completely erased in the 'shoulder of the ring bordering the metal container such that the handle and its attachment means, respectively of articulation, are thus found to have practically no bulk, which certainly meets the optimum requirements. security conditions required and sought in terms of packaging, respectively shipping such metal containers.
If, for whatever reasons, larger handles are preferred, nothing obviously prevents profiling the free ends in such a way that, while being able to be fixed, respectively hinged to said elements according to the invention, the the handle can project laterally over the largest diametrical dimension of the container and extend by resting on the body of the container in the usual manner.
Said attachment elements, respectively of articulation, can obviously be profiled in any manner compatible with the nature and dimensions of the container and more especially of the ring which crowns the upper peripheral edge thereof. These elements can be made from any suitable material and, in particular, can be made from thin metal. Said elements can be fixed by hooking or partial or total crimping or even by welding or by application of all the means generally in use in the technique and industry of manufacturing metal containers.
The method of fixing, respectively of articulation of the handles according to the invention is applicable independently of
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
the shape of the body of the container and is adaptable to any generally any profile of the edging rings or any other similar arrangement suitable for constituting a suitable seat for the cover, respectively for the means (the closure of the container.
Therefore, without any restrictive condition, an embodiment is described in more detail below; referring to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cylindrical container equipped in accordance with to invention; . FIG. 2 is a radial section on an enlarged scale by the fixing means, respectively of articulation of the handle according to the invention; Figure 3 is a plan view of a container according to the invention; FIGS. 4 and 5 show in plan two embodiments of a fixing element, respectively of articulation, of the handle applicable in the execution of FIGS. 1 to 3; FIG. 6 represents a front view of an alternative embodiment;
figure 7 shows in half-side view the execution of figure 6
In the execution of Figures 1 to 3, there is shown a cylindrical container 1 bordered by a crimped ring 2 having,. inwards, a shoulder 3 and a housing 4 substantially U-shaped for the friction-fixing of the corresponding edge 5¯ of the cover 6 ..
In accordance with the invention, the fastening elements of the handle are constituted by two small minimum encumbration parts, respectively 7-8, each having an interior part approximately U-shaped and an exterior part 10. extending one of the branches of said U-shaped part 9 and coming to fit against and hook under the corresponding part of the crimp 11 of the aforesaid ring 2.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
The whole of the attachment part, respectively of attachment thus formed has, in plan, a curved shape concentric with the cylindrical body 1 of the metal container. The free edge
12 of said fastening elements is folded in the shape of a hem and the inner branch has a slot 13 allowing the passage of the folded body 14 of the handle 15 In practice, said slot will generally be extended to the bottom of the U-shaped part of the handle. said attachment piece.
As can easily be seen by examining FIGS. 1 to 3, it suffices to apply two such fasteners, respectively of articulation of the handle on the outer edge of. the ring,
2 bordering the metal container and to 'fix them firmly by deforming their outer part 10 in order to hook the corresponding part of the crimping. Subsequently, when the cover 6 is put in place by energetically clamping its profiled edge 2 in the corresponding annular channel 4 of said edging ring, said fastening elements are still held in their position of fastening to the metal container 'by the fact that the hemmed peripheral edge 16 of the cover comes to rest against the hemmed edge 12 of said fastening elements.
This arrangement also results in the corresponding part of the two ends of the edge being somehow enclosed between two concentric walls so that any force which could be detrimental to the handle is transferred to the adjacent elements. In addition, the handle is prevented from moving radially, which constitutes a very appreciable advantage for the benefit of this new method of fixing, respectively of articulation of the handle.
As shown schematically in plan view in Figures 4 and 5, the fasteners may have an essentially variable length, which will be determined in proportion to the needs of the hooking in order to achieve good resistance to tearing of said fastening means, respectively of articulation of the handle.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
The latter can, as shown in Figure 3, be inscribed [in the shoulder l of the edging ring so as to be fully housed there and thus completely erased. Or, as shown diagrammatically in FIGS. 6 and 7, the handle 15 may, towards its ends, present a complementary folding, respectively 17-18 in order to overflow on either side of the container and to be able to be extended, which may be desired in some cases.
It is moreover possible to give said handle 15 any shape and any conformation, generally any independent of the mode of attachment, respectively of articulation which is the subject of the present invention.
