<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

The present invention relates to a medical device intended to be used more especially but not exclusively in orthopedics and physiotherapy, in particular for the straightening of bone parts, the blocking of the functioning or the support of a part of the c-orps, etc.
According to the invention, such an apparatus essentially comprises at least one adjustable inflatable element, intended to be maintained by an appropriate support on the body with a view to local action on the part of the body with which this element. - inflatable ment is brought into contact.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The support intended to hold at least one inflatable element on a part of the body may be made of a flexible material, or else of a rigid material conforming to an area of the body of appropriate extent.
In a particular embodiment, the inflatable member is held by the support by being contained in an elastic fabric pocket capable of responding to expansion of the member.
In yet another particular embodiment, the support comprising at least one inflatable element is made at least partially of transparent material with a view to enabling the effect obtained to be monitored while the element is being inflated.
The principle of the inflatable element can obviously be used in many different cases and in various ways depending on the desired effect.
In a particular case of use, a medical apparatus according to the invention comprises at least two inflatable elements arranged in a determined manner relative to a part of the body to be straightened, the simultaneous effect of the inflation of the elements being intended to create remedial action.
In another use case, when it comes to straightening a limb, the support comprises at least one rigid element, such as a bar, intended to be connected to the limb by appropriate attachment means, said support supporting at least one inflatable element on the part of the limb where the straightening action is to take place.
Other details and features of the invention will emerge from the description given below by way of non-limiting example and with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Figures 1 to 4 show some particular types of use of the inflatable elements according to the invention.
.It figure 1 shows inflatable elements
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
1 and 2 maintained on the body by a support corset 3, for the straightening of the shoulder blades. The inflatable elements are formed by pockets of rubber or other suitable material, which can be inflated to the desired degree by means of pipettes or valves 4. These elements 1 and 2 can be wrapped in an elastic fabric pocket which can respond to the expansion of the tubes. elements during inflation.
The corset 3 is suitably held on the body by a belt 5 and various straps 6 and 7 (Figures 2 and 3).
As can be seen in Figure 3, the inflatable elements
1 and 2 are arranged in the corset 3 to be applied to the precise desired location of the back. When the corset is attached to the body, it is therefore sufficient to inflate elements 1 and 2 to the desired degree to obtain the 'straightening action' sought on the shoulder blades.
Such a corset 3 can be made of leather, for example, but it is possible to provide transparent parts, such. than 8, to allow monitoring of the effect obtained during inflation, with a view in particular to limiting the extent of this effect to the necessary degree.
Instead of a leather corset, we can provide a corset. in one or more parts in hard material conforming to the shape of the body, for example in a hard, transparent material, the inflatable element or elements 1 being fixed internally to this hard material,
It will be understood that inflatable elements of the above type can be used in many particular treatment cases. In the case of straightening a spine, for example, one or more inflatable elements may be disposed along the. column, to bring about a recovery, the progress of which can, moreover, be easily controlled during inflation by monitoring the movement of the processes, so that the elements can be inflated to the desired degree.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
Such inflatable elements can also be used in hip belts, to support the kidneys, for straightening a limb (figure 4), etc.
In Figure 4; a support is provided comprising a rigid rod 9 supporting an inflatable element 1 and held along the limb by appropriate straps 10 and 11. This apparatus of FIG. 4 is suitable, for example, for straightening the knees.
11 is fixed along the leg by the straps 10 and 11 so that the inflatable element 1 is applied to the chosen part of the knee.
This element can then be inflated to the desired degree, the progress of the recovery being easily monitored.
In physiotherapy, when a muscle must be developed while the symmetrical muscle (s) must not be worked, these can be blocked during gymnastics of the atrophied muscle using belts or corsets comprising one or more inflatable elements such as than above.
The principle of inflatable elements can also be used in medical fields other than orthopedics and physiotherapy. In the case, for example, of the removal of a diseased lung, the remaining lung normally experiences difficulty in functioning after the operation. An inflatable element according to the invention can ,. in this case, to be applied usefully on the diseased lung, for some time before the operation, progressively blocking the functioning of this diseased lung, and in per-. thus allowing the healthy lung to get used to functioning on its own.
The inflatable elements therefore have the great advantage of being adjustable in effect, for example with a view to progressive action or simply to limit the desired degree of action.
In the case of straightening, they also have the advantage 'of not having to be worn' continuously, but although a few hours a day alone are sufficient to obtain
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
little by little the desired effect.
Finally, it should be understood that the invention is not limited to the given embodiments but that many variations can be provided without departing from the scope of the present patent.
The same is true of the fields of use.
