sont décrits et représentés dans des brevets antérieurs.; Jusqu'ici, le train d'engrenages secondaire a été ajouté dans le but d'obtenir une multiplication à rapport étroit en accou- plant ensemble les parties des deux trains d'engrenages de manière à ce que le support planétaire du train d'engrenages primaire soit accouplé à des organes appropriés du train d'en- grenages secondaire, et ainsi par un accouplement de sortie alternant, :;

centrale,un anneau, et des roues planétaires supportées par un support de planétaires, un second moyen d'accouplement de sortie unidirectionnel pour connecter le support de plané- taires du train d'engrenages secondaire à l'organe de sortie lorsque le premier organe d'accouplement de sortie est rendu inopérant;

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

are described and shown in prior patents .; Heretofore, the secondary gear train has been added for the purpose of achieving close ratio multiplication by coupling the parts of the two gear trains together so that the planetary support of the gear train primary is coupled to appropriate components of the secondary gear train, and thus by an alternating output coupling,:;
The planetary support of the secondary gear train can produce a narrower ratio between the normal reduction ratio of the primary gear train and a direct drive, with the possibility in certain cases of also being able to obtain the said ratio. normal reduction of the primary gear train: @
The object of the present invention is a combination and arrangement of parts, so as to produce a gearbox of the aforementioned kind, having a new range of gear ratios.
According to the present invention, an epicyclic gearshift box for the wheel hub of a bicycle of the kind having primary and secondary epicyclic gear trains coupled together, the primary gear train comprising a fixed central wheel, a ring and planetary wheels supported by a planetary support and together forming a primary epicyclic gear train, an input member, an input coupling means for selectively coupling the input member to said planetary carrier or ring, an output member, a first unidirectional output coupling means for coupling the ring to the output member,

center, a ring, and planetary wheels supported by a planetary support, a second unidirectional output coupling means for connecting the planetary support of the secondary gear train to the output member when the first member is the output coupling is made inoperative;
is characterized in that the planetary carrier of the primary gear train is coupled to the ring of the secondary gear train, and is further characterized by a selector coupling means for the adapted secondary gear train either to lock the central pinion of the secondary gear train to a stationary part of the gear or to release said central pinion and simultaneously lock together two of the aforementioned elements of the secondary gear train and thus, while the first One-way output coupling is kept inoperative, the secondary gear train selector coupling means may be operated to produce further reduction ratios.
The aforesaid epicyclic gearshift boot can also be characterized in that the stationary member to which the secondary center gear can be coupled is the primary center gear.

As shown in Figures 1 and 2, a variable hub transmission according to one form of the invention comprises a fixed axis 1 on which is formed a central pinion 1a of a primary epicyclic gear train. With this central pinion mesh 2 planetary pinions carried on

dowels 3 in a sun gear holder 4. The sun gear holder 4 is provided with pawls 4a at one end and it extends into 4b at the other end in an annular shape in which there are gear teeth. 4c forming 1. ' ring of a second secondary epicyclic gear train.
The primary epicyclic train is completed by a ring 5 in which there are gear teeth 5a. An extension of this ring carries flanges 5b between which are mounted main output pawls 6 on pegs 7, pawls 6 being formed with shank extensions 6a.
Surrounding the ring flanges 5b, there is an output member in the form of a wheel hub shell 9 threaded at 9a to hold an end cap 8. This cap terminates! minale 8 is formed internally with licking teeth 8a which act in concert with the pawls 6. The end cap 8 is mounted on a ball bearing 10 on an input member 11 which in turn is mounted on ball bearing 12 on a bearing cone 13 which is screwed onto the axle
1. The input member carries a control ring 14 fixed at this location in any suitable known manner.
Forks 11a extending from the input member 11 engage a sliding clutch member 15 which is mounted on a sleeve 16, the clutch member 15 being retained on the sleeve by a ring 17 and a transverse peg 18.
The peg 18 is slidably housed in a slot 1b of the axle and is capable of performing an axial movement therein.
To the central pinion 1a is contiguous a sleeve 19 slidably mounted on the axis 1 and on which is mounted so as to be able to turn another central pinion 20 for the second secondary epicyclic gear train. A ring
21 and a transverse pin 22 retain the central pinion 20 on the sleeve, the pin 22 resting in a slot
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
le of axis 1 and being able to effect axial movement therein
Completing this secondary gear train by meshing with the central pinion 20 and the ring 4c, there are planetary pinions 23 carried on pegs 24 in a .support 25.
Between the flanges 25a of the support 25 are alternating output clicks 26 mounted on dowels 26a. The carrier 25 is also formed with internal teeth 25b designed to be meshed by the central pinion 20. Surrounding the support flanges 25a is an end cap 27 which is screwed into the other end of the hub shell 9 in 9b. This end cap is mounted on a ball bearing 28 on a bearing cone 29 which is screwed onto the axis 1.
This end cap is internally formed with ratchet teeth 27a which act in concert with the pawls 26. Located between the planetary gears 2 and 23 of the two gear trains, there is an internally toothed ring 30 which meshes. with the central pinion 1a, lateral movement being prevented by the pinions 2 and 23.
Inside the hole 1d of the axis 1, there is a rod 31 provided with a shoulder 31a, the reduced portion of the rod passing through holes in the transverse pins 22 and 18. Another shoulder 31b on the rod 31 abuts against a collar 32, and the rod 31 is screwed into another rod 33 at 33a. Surrounding the reduced portion of the rod 31 and located between the transverse pins 22 and 18, there is a spring 34 and, between the collar 32 and a collar 35 screwed in the axis 1, there is another spring 36, which is stronger than spring 34.
The operation of the gear is established as follows: increased gear ratio: since the spring 36 is stronger than the spring 34, the transverse pins 22 and 18 are normally biased in their most position.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
to the left. The central pinion 20 is therefore engaged with the internal teeth 25b of the planetary support 25 as well as with the planetary gears 23, thus rendering this secondary gear train inoperative while allowing it to turn en bloc with the support 4. of the pr @ mayor gear train.
The clutch member 15, being in engagement with the pawls
4a of the support 4, transmits the input torque from the prongs 11a of the member 11 via the pinions 2 to the ring 5 and by. through the main output pawls 6 and the ratchet teeth 8a of the end cap 8 at the end. hub casing 9. Since the ring 5 turns faster than the support 4, an increased multiplication is obtained and the ratchet teeth 27a of the end cap 27 rotating at the same speed as the ring 5 pass over it the pawls 26.
Direct drive: by moving the rod 33 to the right so as to take the position shown in the figure
1 the spring 34 retains the pin 22 on the left of the slot 1c as before, but the pin 18 assumes the position shown by moving the clutch member 15 with it to engage the internal grooves 5c of the ring 5. The torque coming from the prongs 11a of the input member 11 is thus transmitted directly to the ring 5 and via the main output pawls 6 to the end cap 8 and to the hub shell 9. The ratchet teeth 27a will pass over the pawls 26 as before.
First reduction: A further movement of the rod 33 to the right brings the shoulder 31a into contact with the transverse pin 22, but does not move it. The transverse pin 18 carries the clutch member
15 further along the internal grooves 5c of the ring 5 until it is in line with the main exit pawls 6 and, by engagement with the tail extensions
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
6a clicks, disconnects them from the ratchet teeth. 8a. The torque from organ 11 is so. transmitted! via ring 5 and pinions 2 to support 4.
Since the central pinion 20 is still engaged with the support 26 via the internal teeth 25b, the secondary gear train turns as a unit with the support 4 and the clicks 26 in the support 25 transmit the torque via the ratchet teeth 27a to the end cap 27 and hence to the hub shell 9. These three gear ratios are those normally produced by the primary epicyclic gear train alone.
Second demultiDlication a further movement of the rod 33 to the right causes the shoulder 31a of the rod 31 to move the transverse pin 23 to the right and with it the central pinion 20, so as to disconnect it from the teeth 25b support 25 and engage it with the internal teeth of sleeve 30, thereby locking secondary center gear 20 to center gear. primary la and thus to axis 1.
No movement of the transverse ankle 18 occurs as it has already reached with the previous movement of the rod 21 the extreme right end of the slot 1b. The torque coming from the prongs 11a of the input member 11 is always transmitted via the ring 5 via the pinions 2 to the support 4 but, since now the secondary central pinion 20 is fixed to the axis 1 against a rotation, the torque is transferred. puts via the ring 4b via the pinions 23 to the support 25 = thus giving a new reduction in gear in addition to that provided by the first train. The final control to the hub shell 9 is via the clicks 26, the ratchet teeth 27a and the end cap 27 as for the first reduction gear ratio.
This multiplication is therefore provided by the combined action of two epicyclic gear trains
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
acting in series, the single reduction ratio output of the primary gear train being further reduced by the single reduction ratio of the secondary epicyclic gear train.
As an example of the gear ratios obtained, if both the primary and secondary epicyalic gear trains have a ratio of ring teeth to center wheel teeth of 3 to 1, which is a common value for hub gears of the type described, then the increased gear ratio will be 4 to 3, the direct drive will be 1 to 1, the first gear will be 3 to 4 and the second gear will be 9 to 16. On can obviously vary these ratios as required in any known manner, for example by varying the size and number of. teeth in the gears or using. staggered gears, without departing from the invention.
A variant of the control mechanism is shown in Figure 3 ,. Here the two transverse pins 22 and 18 are urged by the spring 34 towards the outer ends of the slots 1c and 1b of the axis 1. This gives the first reduction position. The rod 31 is the same as in the previous case, but another rod 37 is screwed to the rod 31 so as to produce the shoulder 37a. Pushing or pulling the combined rods 31, 37 to the left or to the right as needed then gives the other required engagement positions. Other variants of the spring systems are obviously possible or, if desired, an independent control means can be provided for the two transverse anchors.
