<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

Improvements to multiple drills.
The object of the invention is a multiple drilling machine making it possible to simultaneously drill two or more holes in the same part at desired heights.
This new drilling machine is characterized in that the drills are each carried and driven by an individual motor moving radially and horizontally above a suitable frame, preferably circular in shape, in order to drill holes in a clamped part. adjustable height in the center of the frame. Under this frame are mounted so
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Easily accessible the various controls ensuring the clamping of the part to be drilled, its heightening and the operation of the drilling members.
The drill forming the subject of the present invention is shown, by way of example, in the drawing where:
Fig.l is a side elevational view; Fig. 2 a plan view, and
Fig.3 a section 3-3 of Fig.2, on a larger scale.
On the cylindrical-shaped frame 1 of the machine is fixed a table 2 on which are disposed radially movably four electric motors 3 connected to a socket. Each of these motors turns a drill 4 directed horizontally towards the vertical axis of the machine.
The table 2 is pierced in its center with an opening in which is fixed a tubular support 31 in one or more parts projecting above and below the table 2 centrally receiving the part to be drilled, namely the tube 5, Inside the support 31 can slide a tube 8 in which rest in a conical bearing 14 the jaws 13 of a concentric clamping mandrel 6, 'extended by a tube 7 threaded at its lower part to receive beyond the base of the tube 8 a 7 'collar.
On this collar 7 'is articulated a caliper 9 provided with cams 10 capable of exerting pressure on a washer 12 terminating the tube 8. Consequently, by the operation of a lever 11 connected to the caliper 9, in at the same time as the cams 10 bear on the immobilized tube 8, the tube 7 is forced to lower and as a result the conical jaws 13 close in the corresponding bearing 14 of the tube 8 on the tube 5, which thus lies perfectly tight.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
By means of an operation in the opposite direction of the lever 11, the tube 7 and the mandrel 6 are released, so that under the action of a spring 15 inserted between these members and the tube 8, the mandrel 6 is lifted out of the latter and the tube to be drilled is loosened
As shown in Fig. 3, the sliding tube 8 has superimposed notches 16 on the outside, the spacing of which depends on the desired distance between the drilling levels of the tube 5.
To switch from one level to another, a lever 19 is used as a control member, articulated at 20 on a support 21 fixed under the table 2. This lever is extended beyond its articulation by an arm 18. terminated by a projection in the form of a nose 17, capable of penetrating into one or the other notch 16. By acting on the lever 19, the nose is introduced into one of the notches force on the walls of the latter to raise the tube 'sliding 8 of one or more notches ,,. Advantageously for this purpose is used a "locking device consisting of a ring 22 em, - stirring the sliding tube 8 against the wall of which are provided two cavities opposite to each other.
In the notch 16 surmounting the lifting nose 17 is housed under the action of a suitable spring an additional nose 23 integral with a lug 23 'capable of moving in a buttonhole 23' 'of the ring 22. This lug is in contact externally to the latter with a pawl 38 pivoting at '22' on the aforesaid ring and resting by its free end against a lug 18 'carried by the arm 18. Thus the arm 18, and consequently the nose 17 are kept in the blocking position in the oran considered 16. When to unhook the lever 19 is operated, the pawl 38 is acted at the same time, which forces the lug 23 'and consequently the nose 23 to get out of its lockstep.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
On the other hand, in the opposite cavity of the ring 22 is housed a cleat 24 which, under the action of a spring 25, penetrates into a longitudinal groove 26 made in the sliding tube 8. When the trigger is triggered. lever 19, after the tube 5 having undergone the desired perforations (see Fig. 3) is loosened, as explained previously. and withdrawn from the machine, the slide automatically drops back to its starting position, then retained by a suitable stop.
It has been said that each drill bit 4, is carried by a separate motor 3. These motors are each mounted on a base forming a carriage 27 guided in a known manner by a V-groove plate fixed to the table 2. Under each carriage 27 is fixed a nozzle 36 capable of sliding radially with respect to the table 2 on a shaft 38 carried by the latter. This nozzle 36 is integral with an arm 361 plunging under the table 2 through a groove 37 formed in the latter.
This arm is controlled by a pinion 34 with an axis. -excentric 35 engaged with a section of, rack 33 carried by a plate 29 mounted with ball bearings 30 on the central tube support 31. The plate 29 thus carries. four \ rack elements 33,. corresponding to each of the drilling stations 3, so that by acting on an operating lever 28, with which the plate 29 is provided, one causes the displacement towards the center of the machine '' or towards the outside of the various arms 36 'and consequently carriages 27 carrying the drilling motors.
The cylindrical body 1 constituting the frame of the machine has an opening 39 of sufficient dimensions to allow the seated driller worker to introduce his legs under the body 1 while having the various operating levers 11, 19 within reach. 28.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
Under these conditions, to drill holes in a tube such as 5, the worker having using his lever 11 to release the jaws 13 of the mandrel 6, introduce the base of the tube to be drilled into these jaws, then maneuver its lever 11 in the opposite direction to lower the mandrel and tighten the tube. Then he unlocks the nose 17 of the lever 19 by folding the pawl 38 which makes it possible to act on the lever 19 to lower the sliding tube 8 and therefore bring the tube 5 to the upper drilling level. to actuate the control lever 28 to cause the movement towards the center of the four carriages 27, so that the drills 4 carried by the motors 3, in rotation under individual control by switch or other device, drill the desired holes in the tube 5.
In the present case, the four drills 4 work at different heights, which is obtained by inserting the thicknesses chosen into the various carriages. - On the other hand, in the event that it is not desired to drill four holes at the same time, it will suffice to interrupt the current in the unused motor (s).
The holes being 'drilled in a first plane, one acts on the lever 28 to bring back the carriages 27, then the lever 19 is operated to raise the sliding tube 8 by a notch. The latter will therefore rise in the central support. of the desired height and the tube 5 will reach the level of the second drilling plane, and so on.
It is understood that it would not be departing from the scope of the invention to use, for carrying out the various operations of clamping, leveling and drilling of the part to be drilled, other construction forms than those described. above. Thus, for example, one could provide in the tube a helical groove which
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
should run through one or more lugs carried by the corresponding operating lever.
