The present invention relates to new chemical compounds of therapeutic interest.
In its Belgian Patents Nos. 524,653, 525,696, 525,695, 532,805 and 532,806, the Applicant has described certain alpha: omega-diphenoxyalkanes in which secondary and tertiary amino groups are substituted in the para position of the benzene rings. These compounds, when administered orally to mice infected with Schistosoma mansoni, exert an activity highlighted by the disappearance of worms from the mesenteric and portal vein, their accumulation in the liver and their final destruction by phagocytosis.
It has now been found that 1: 4-diphenoxy-pentanes having primary, secondary and tertiary amino groups in position, para to benzene rings, and corresponding to the general formula (I), exert great activity against schistosoma.

1 2 In these formulas and the following: R and R may be the same or different and may be hydrogen or alkyl groups having one to four carbon atoms or alkyl groups having two to four carbon atoms and bearing at least one hydroxyl group on a carbon atom or on carbon atoms other than the atom adjacent to the nitrogen atom.
The compounds of formula (I) can be presented as being acid addition salts, for example the hydrochloride.
In one of its aspects, the present invention therefore comprises new compounds, active against Schistosoma mansoni, of the general formula (I) and acid addition salts of these compounds.
Processes for preparing analogous compounds have already been described in the aforementioned patents and the same processes can be used for the preparation of the compounds of the present invention.
In general these methods comprise the condensation of a 1: 4-disubstituted pentane of formula (II) with a disubstituted benzene of formula (III) o
EMI1.2
In these formulas, X and Y are groups capable of reacting together to form an ether bond. Group 1 can be a hydroxy group and group X can be a halogen (eg bromine), or an alkanesulfonyl (eg methanesulfonyl), arenesulfonyl (eg toluene-p-sulfonyl) or aralkanesulfonyl group (eg. benzylsulfonyl) The group Z can be the desired group -NR R when the latter is a tertiary amino group, or a group convertible by known methods into a primary secondary amino group, or a tertiary -NR -R group.
According to the present invention, and in another of its aspects, a process for preparing the compounds of the general formula (I) consists in reacting a compound of the general formula (II) with a compound -; - of the formula general (III) and if necessary, to transform group Z

When -NR -R is to be a secondary amino group, these methods may include removing a protecting group, mentioned below, from a -NR W group. This protecting group can also be a nitroso group which is removed by reduction.
When -NR1-R2 is to be a tertiary amino group, a corresponding primary amine can be alkylated or a corresponding quaternary amino compound can be subjected to pyrolysis or hydrolysis by an alkali hydroxide or alkoxide.
The invention will be described below with reference to the following examples, in which all temperatures are indicated in degrees Centigrade.
