<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

The present invention relates to two-stroke internal combustion engines with exhaust turbine supercharging and consists in that, in such engines, there first only occurs a sweeping of the engine cylinders by at least one turbo- blower driven by the exhaust gases of the engine, with a relatively low purging air pressure, after which a secondary or additional supercharging takes place, at a higher pressure, of these cylinders, through secondary intake openings provided therein, the exhaust and scavenging air ports then being closed, the secondary charge air being discharged by at least one fan mechanically controlled by the engine or other means, supplied by the pre-compressed air from the turbb-blower,
Preferably, the device supplying the indirect charge air and controlled by the engine is calculated for an effective flow rate such as the latter represents, at least in conjunction with the purging air supplied in less quantity - and which is discharged in this case. effectively to the cylinder cavities using at least one exhaust turbo-blower before compression begins - at least the amount of air theoretically required for the amount of fuel required for start-up and when the engine is accelerated to its operating speed
In addition, the intake ports for the indirect charge air can be formed tangentially in the cylinders of the internal combustion engine, in such a way that, during the indirect charge process, it follows.

the communication between this system and the secondary boost lights in the cylinders remains closed.
It is also possible to adopt an arrangement according to which the air discharged by the secondary supercharging system is sucked by the latter into the collector or intermediate purge air reservoir.
The engine's exhaust gases can flow to the exhaust turbo-blower, in a known manner, through exhaust ducts separated from each other, the purge air and the charge air are separated from each other. - condaire being directed, each by at least one distinct duct, towards the cylinders of the engine, the latter duct possibly being common to a few cylinders.

In fig. -1 1''index 1 designates the engine block in which is mounted a cylinder liner 2, the block and the LINER being closed at the top by a cylinder head 3. The index 4 designates the engine piston; 5 an exhaust gas turbine, which mechanically controls the supercharging blower 6, independently of the engine.
The exhaust gases arrive through the exhaust port and the duct 8 to the turbine 5 and leave the latter through the duct 9o The purging air is sucked in by the blower 6 at 10 and is discharged through the channel 11 to the purging air accumulator 12 of the engine From there, the air enters the displacement 14 through the slits or purging air lights 13. According to the invention, it is further provided in the
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
wall of the cylinder, above, orifices 13 which serve for the introduction of the secondary charge air.
This air is withdrawn from the accumulator 12 and arrives through channel 16 (an inverter member 17 being interposed in the case of reversible motors) into the "Roots" blower 18, the latter driving the air through channel 19. towards the shutter member 20 which allows the secondary charge air to enter through the slots 15 for the required time. In channel 19, there is also a cooler 21 which cools this air before it enters cylinder 14. The cooling water arrives through channel 22 and flows out through pipe 23. The medium control Canique of the Roots blower is provided by the chain 24 driven from the crankshaft 25 by means of the pinion 26. The timing or camshaft of the engine is designated by 30; it is controlled by the chain 31 driven by a pinion 32, also from the crankshaft 25.
The chain 31 also controls, by the pinion 33, the secondary supercharging spool 20, the control of this spool and of the timing shaft 30 is provided by means of a single endless chain 31 passing over two guide pulleys 34 and 35.
The exhaust valve 36 is controlled in a known manner by the camshaft 30 by means of rods and levers 37. In the position shown of the piston 4 and the camshaft 30, the gases escape through the orifice 7 and through the open exhaust valve 76, towards the turbine 5. On the other hand, the purging air, coming from the accumulator tank 12, enters the cylinder through the slots 13. However, at this time of the cycle, the member 20 interrupts communication with the secondary supercharging device 18, and the secondary supercharging air cannot enter the cylinder 14 through the orifices 15.
When the engine continues to rotate in the direction of arrow A, the scanning slits 13 are closed by the piston 4 and the exhaust valve 36 closes, while the passage of the secondary charge air through the orifices 15 towards the cylinder 14 is reestablished as a result of the rotation of the spool 20, so that this air can enter the cylinder without being disturbed either by the exhaust or by the sweeping and can thus fill the cylinder with a more strongly compressed load.
In fig. 2, the index 14 designates the cylinder, 2 the liner thereof, 1 the part of the cylinder block which surrounds the liner; 19 the secondary charge air inlet channel; 15 the secondary charge ports in the cylinder, and 20 a section of the shutter member for the secondary charge air.
In this example, the secondary supercharging ports have a tangential direction of flow with respect to cylinder 14. As this direction of flow furthermore goes obliquely towards the top of the cylinder, as shown in fig 1, the secondary supercharging air which enters the cylinder is imparted a rotational movement, combined with a displacement towards the upper part of the cylinder cavity, this air furthermore in particular licking the walls of the cylinder 17 and ensuring additional cooling of these. The fuel which enters through the valve 40 is better distributed and atomized by this vortex of air.
Figure 3 is a side view of the secondary supercharging device 18 with suction 16 and discharge ducts 19. In this embodiment, the device 18 is operated by means of a speed variator 60. By moving the lever 61 assigned to the secondary supercharging device 18, it is possible to obtain different operating speeds of the latter. The control of this auxiliary machine is ensured by chain 24.

dre; 7 the cylinder exhaust ports or ports; 8 the exhaust duct going to the exhaust turbine 5. The latter drives the blower 6 and delivers the air through the duct 11 to the purge air accumulator 12 and, through the slots 13, in the engine cylinder 140 The index 15 designates the orifices provided in the jacket 2, for the entry of the secondary charge air into the latter. In the delivery duct coming from the exhaust turbo-blower is interposed a cooler 21 'in which the refrigerant arrives at 22' to exit at 23 '.
The secondary supercharging device 18 sucks in the air intended for this supercharging through the duct 16, under the control of the reversing valve 17 and discharges this air through the duct 19 towards the secondary supercharging shutter member 20 and the orifices 15 ° L index 31 designates the chain which controls the shutter members 20 and 36, driven from the pinion 32 of the crankshaft 25. This chain is guided by a return pulley 34. The index 24 designates a chain which controls the surali group. - secondary indication 18 and which is driven by the pinion 26 mounted on the extension of the spool shaft 20. An exhaust valve 77, which opens into the purge air accumulator 12, can be inserted in conduit 19 =
Figo 4 shows the position of the piston shortly after the inner dead center (lower).
At this instant, the cylinder is swept by the air entering through the unmasked scavenging slots 13, the displacement thus scanned going, through the exhaust slots 7 and the exhaust duct 8, towards the turbine 5 which 'it leaves, after having carried out useful work there, through the exhaust duct 9. At the same instant, the secondary supercharging ports are unmasked by the piston. However, with the spool 20 closed, the secondary charge air cannot enter the cylinder. As it emerges from the represented position of this drawer, this entry does not take place until shortly after.
However, at this moment, the spool 36 of the exhaust duct 8 is also closed, and the cylinder fills, that is to say is charged with secondary supercharging air, This is followed by the compression of the displacement in the cylinder, all the ports of which are masked by the piston 4, after which the combustion of the fuel introduced by the valve 40 takes place. carbureted gases, itself followed, in order, by exhaust, purging and secondary overfeeding,
In fig. 5, index 1 designates the engine block; 2 the attached cylinder; 2'-2 "of the external elements mounted around this cylinder; 4 the lower piston and 41 the upper piston. The piston 4 is moved vertically back and forth by the crankshaft 25 by means of the rod of piston 4 'and connecting rod 4 ".
The piston 41, on the other hand, is given a reciprocating vertical movement, still by the crankshaft 25, but by the entry of the cross member 41 'of the tie rods 41 ", of the cross member 41"', of the connecting rod 41 " "and the eccentric 41" "'which turns on this crankshaft. The index 5 designates the exhaust turbine which controls the blower 6. The turbine receives the exhaust gases through the duct 80 These leave the turbine through the duct 9. The purging air enters the turbo-blower. outlet at 10 and leaves it through duct 11, to enter the purge air accumulator 12.
From there it enters the cavity 14 of the cylinder through the openings 13, of which we see two rows staggered in height 7 denotes the exhaust openings provided in the top of the cylinder, also in two rows. 15 denotes the secondary supercharging orifices through which air enters the cylinder 14 when the spool 20 opens the passage to the ports 15. The ports 13 and 15 may, as shown in FIG. 4, be arranged in such a manner. shifted in the

sense of the periphery of the Cylinder. This gives better passage of the piston rings over the scavenging air inlet orifices.
The secondary supercharging system consists of a two-stage centrifugal blower 18, which sucks air through duct 16 from the scavenging accumulator 12 or from the exhaust turbo-blower 6. The blower Multistage centrifugal 18 comprises two movable wheels 51 and 52, a casing 53, a suction horn 54, a discharge horn 55 and a control shaft 56. The scanning of the cylinder 14 takes place in the position shown of the pistons 4. and 41.
In the following, the secondary boost shutter 20 opens, while the exhaust shutter
36 closes, and the cylinder fills with secondary supercharging air, compressed more strongly than the purging air, this being followed by the compression of the displacement, combustion, expansion, exhaust scanning, and so on.
Figure 6 shows a two-stroke engine fitted with a butt and comprising the engine block 1, the cylinder liner 2, the cylinder head 3 and the engine piston 4. The index 5 designates the turbine of exhaust connected to the cylinder exhaust pipe and which controls a supercharging blower 6 for engine purging air. The turbine receives the burnt gases from the engine through the exhaust ports 7 provided in the cylinder sleeve and through the exhaust duct 8. The gases leave the turbine through the duct 9. The purging air delivered by the blower 6 is discharged through line 11 to scavenging accumulator 12 from where it enters cavity 14 of the working cylinder through scavenging ports provided in the cylinder liner.
Before reaching the ports 13, the purging air is cooled by means of a cooler 21 'in which the circulation of the refrigerant is maintained by means of ducts 22' and 23 '. In this exemplary embodiment, and unlike the other examples shown, no shutter is provided between the exhaust ports 7 and the exhaust turbine 5. On the other hand, the ports 15 for the supercharged air - tation, secondary are placed higher, that is to say closer to the ignition neutral point, than the exhaust ports 7, so that, when the latter are masked by the piston and the spool 20 for the secondary supercharging air opens, no fraction of this air can escape through the ports 7 to the exhaust turbine.
For this reason, the drawer 20 only opens when the exhaust ports 7 are more or less masked by the piston, after which the filling of the cylinder 14 with the secondary charge air begins. The secondary supercharging system here consists of a double-acting piston pump, the piston 70 of which is moved by the butt 73 of the engine via a rod 71 and an arm 72. The index 16 denotes the suction duct which takes the air in the purge accumulator 12 and brings it, through the suction valves 74, to the cylinder 75 of the pump, which delivers this air, through the valves 76 and the delivery duct 19, towards the spool 20 and, through the indirect supercharging ports 15 in the cylinder 14.
Here again, the time represented in the cylinder working cycle corresponds approximately to the end of the sweep period. Shortly thereafter, the secondary supercharging process begins, with drawer 20 then open. The latter is here also controlled by a chain 31 and a pinion 32 mounted on the crankshaft 25.
Fig. 7 shows, by way of example, the shape of the pressure P2 during operation, during one revolution of a two-stroke engine operating in accordance with the object of the invention. Between the crank angles 0 and 105, starting from the top dead center (OTP) of any one of the engines of freezes 1, 4 and 6, there occurs in the cylinder% 'ignition, combustion and relaxation.
At this last crank angle the exhaust lights

pement 7 start to unmask and remain open until 255 after the OTP point, which is indicated by the big black line a below the diagram-. The drawer 36, on the other hand, remains open for the time represented by the hatched b with slanting lines towards the left, so that this drawer closes shortly before the end of the opening of the exhaust ports. The hatched c, with lines slanting to the right, indicates the opening of the scanning lights 13 of the cylinder.
The hatched d with vertical lines indicates the duration of opening of the secondary boost ports on the cylinder wall, while the hatched E, with crossed lines, represents the duration of the opening of the drawer 20 for secondary charge air. It emerges from the pressure and distribution diagram a-e that the exhaust spool 36 closes shortly before 230 with the crank. At this time, but preferably somewhat later, the 13 segment scan lights close. The secondary boost lights 15, segment d, remain open until about 260.
The secondary charge air flows into the cylinder approximately in the interval between the closing of the sweep lights 13 (segment c) and the closing of the charge lights 15 (d) o This input air takes place during the opening of the drawer for the secondary charge air, which opens approximately when the piston scavenging ports are closed and which may still last for a certain period of time up to 'beyond the OTP point of the piston, since the secondary boost ports 15 (segment d) have already been masked by the piston at the crank angle of around 2700
For clarity, the PSP purge pressure and PNL secondary boost pressure have been marked on the pressure diagram,
so as to show the approximate duration of the secondary overeating process.
