Figure 1 est une coupe longitudinale du joint suivant l'inven- tion ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

This invention relates to flexible joints for pipes and in particular to flexible joints subjected to external pressures.
In some cases, part of a pipeline formed of rigid or flexible pipes must be able to move while the remaining part tends to remain stationary.
When a pressurized fluid circulates in a pipe, a conduit or a flexible tube, it often happens that the latter is subjected to bending and torsional forces in the manner of a transmission shaft, which imposes on it in service a very strong constraint. This is further complicated and aggravated in the case where an external pressure, greater than the internal pressure, is exerted on the flexible tube at a place, called the point of inflection, where a part of the pipe is stationary while the immediately adjacent part of the pipe. tube tends to move.
Working under these conditions shortens the life of the pipe due to the production at the inflection point of cracks which allow the external fluid to pass inside the pipe., This creates an undesirable situation, which is remedied. flexible joint according to the present invention.
According to the invention, the flexible joint for pipes comprises a sleeve, a ball, having its seat inside the sleeve at one end thereof, a gasket between the ball and the sleeve, and a part closure at the other end of the sleeve, the sleeve, the ball and the closure piece each having an axial bore.
Reference is made below to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the seal according to the invention;
Figure 2 is an end view at one end, and
Figure 3 an end view of the other end
Figure 1 shows a movable ball joint 1 mounted in a socket 2 which is normally fixed in place. A closure part 3 is screwed into the sleeve 2. A yoke 4 is placed between the parts 1 and 2, while a seal 5 is placed between the sleeve and the ball 1. A seal of seal 6 is provided between the sleeve 2 and the closure part 3.
The ball 1 is pierced with an axial bore 10. The outer end of the ball 1 is suitably threaded as indicated at 11, so that a rubber hose can be attached thereto, for example. The inner end of the ball 1 is constituted by an outer spherical part 12.
The sleeve 2 is cylindrical and hollow. At one of its ends, the cylindrical wall of the sleeve is constricted as indicated at 15, the internal walls of part 15 being rounded to match the external curvature of the spherical part 12 of the ball 1. It will be noted that, except in its necked part 15, the sleeve 2 has an axial bore of sufficient diameter to allow the passage of the spherical part 12 of the ball 1. The internal face of the cylindrical wall which forms the sleeve 2 is threaded at 20 The closure piece 3 comprises an outer part 21 having surfaces ready to be gripped by a suitable tool such as a key.
The part 3 also has an annular rim turned outwards 22, of a diameter equal to that of the timber 2. The part 3 is axially reamed at 25 and is provided with a thread 26 which is screwed into the thread. thread 20 of the internal wall of the valve 2.
As seen in fig 1, the seal 6 is clamped between the end face of the cylindrical wall of the sleeve 2 and the rim

22 when the thread 26 is fully screwed into the thread 20.
The yoke 4 has an axial bore 30 and has an outer diameter approximately equal to the inner diameter of the plug 2. An end face 31 of the yoke 4 has a spherical internal configuration matching the curvature of the spherical part 12 of the yoke. the toggle 1. The opoosée face of the yoke 4 is flat and rests on the inner end face of the closure part 3. The yoke 4 can be made of a material having the property of effectively lubricating the spherical end
12 of the ball joint 1, graphite for example.
The internal face of the cylindrical wall of the sleeve 2 has an annular groove 40 located near the necked end 15.
The groove 40 receives the seal 5.
The axial bore 25 of the closure piece 3 is threaded at 50 to enable a suitable flexible rubber hose to be connected thereto which conducts the fluid from one place to another.
To assemble the elements of the seal according to the invention, the sealing gasket 5 is first inserted into the groove 40. The ball joint 1 is then engaged in the sleeve 2 from right to left, with respect to the position of the joints. parts shown in fig. 1, the threaded end
11 of the ball 1 being introduced first into the sleeve 2 so as to bring the spherical part 12 into contact with the seat formed by the internal wall of the curved part 15. Then, the yoke 4 is introduced into the open end of the sleeve 2, the concave face 31 forward, and it is brought into contact with the spherical part 12 of the ball joint. The seal 6 is then placed on the closure piece 3 and this latter is screwed into the sleeve 2, tightening it strongly against the yoke 4 and the cylindrical wall of the sleeve 2.
The axial bores 10, 30 and 25 are in the continuation of one another and form a duct inside the joint which constitutes part of the pipe formed by the flexible pipes fixed to the ends of the joint. Fluid at atmospheric pressure can circulate in the duct thus formed. The yoke 4 is made of a material, such as graphite, which serves to lubricate the spherical part 12 as it moves in the chamber formed by the sleeve 2 and the end part 15, the sealing gasket. 5 and the face 31 of the yoke 4.
The gasket 5 and the gasket 6 have the effect of preventing the entry into the seal of an external fluid, such as water, which may be under a pressure as high as 350 pounds. (Approx. 25 kg / cm2) for example. As the bore 10 has a considerably smaller diameter than that of the bore 30, the face 31 is in contact with only a part of the surface of the spherical part 12 and therefore, when the ball 1 moves, the axial bore 10 'is at all times in communication with the bore 30.
