<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
Ainsi que représenté,les surfaces de la pièced'insertion et du manchon peuvent,comme c'est ordinairement'le cas,être pourvues de gorges annulaires 8,9 respectivement,procurant des ancrages pour le caoutchouc refoulé dans ces gorges pendant la contraction.;
La réduction progressive du manchon 1 est d'ordinaire commencée à l'extrémité du manchon qui est éloignée du rebord et se poursuit vers l'extrémité pourvue d'un rebord,mais elle peut être commencée à partir du milieu environ du manchon et se poursuivre progressivement de part et d'autre de cette zone centrale;
Les gorµes ou rainures 8 de la pièce d'insertion 3 peuvent être inclinées d un coté afin de permettre au caoutchouc de s'écouler faci- lement par dessus ces rainures ou gorges pendant l'opération de con- traction mais de façon à"mordre" le caoutchouc s'il tendait à se dépla- cer dans l'autre direction;

Improvements to couplings for flexible pipes.
The present invention relates to couplings for flexible hoses $, the invention more specifically relating to the assembly of a coupling with the end of the hose when the latter is made of rubber or a rubber-like material *
Such couplings include two mating members which are pressed together to form a tight seal, at least one of the coupling members being arranged so that one end of a pipe can be fitted. be assembled to this element, which is why said element comprises a part intended to be inserted, called a hollow im- ment part, to be fitted into the end of the hollow of the pipe,
and a ferrule or sleeve member which fits over the outer surface of the end of the pipe.
The invention consists in providing a deformable metal element, which is interposed between the outer sleeve and the insert, and disposed opposite the end of the pipe, and in fixing the coupling member to the pipe. by the method of gradually reducing the diameter of the sleeve towards the end of the pipe and consequently towards the element, which is itself held at. against an axial displacement in the direction of progressive reduction.
As we know that rubber is substantially incompressible, it follows that during the progressive contraction of the sleeve, the cauut- chouc is made to flow at the end, and this flow results in a deformation of the element, (usually a washer) which, due to its deformation and the reduced diameter of the sleeve, is pressed firmly against the inner wall of the sleeve thereby providing a tight seal.
The deformable element not only allows the rubber to flow, but controls this flow, so that during the progressive contraction of the sleeve, the rubber is pressed against the outer surface of the insert and the inner surface. of the sleeve with pressure depending on the force of the element, so that close contact is made at the surfaces.
In order to further increase the efficiency of the coupling, the insert may be provided with a bearing surface which produces a bulge in the pipe and comes opposite a bearing which. presents the sleeve, the assembly being thereby additionally assured ,, or fixed.
Usually, the insert is established with an enlargement which constitutes the support and which, when the insert is depressed

of diameter of the sleeve obliges it to 8 procure> a7DPtil / OPPOR6, 3 tr8, - towards the bulge, the support formed on the insert.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which

properly speaking, and being intended to be pressed in en7aemr.t in a corresponding recess formed in the other member of the coupling proper, in the usual manner, by a nut (not shown) which presses against 1 'shouldered formed by the head.
The pipe is indicated in 4, and receives the part inserted in its hollow,
EMI2.6
and the sleeve 1 over its end xter1P.4valt, that the insert 2 is put in place, a washer mhta, 7liauo have been inserted on it up to a shoulder '3 provided by a reduction in the clinmeter of the insert, this shoulder limiting the axial displacement of the washer on the insert in the direction of the head 3 The sleeve is provided with a re-entrant rim 7 having an opening suitable for allowing passage over the head .
The parts having been assembled as shown in fig. 1,
EMI2.7
noticing that the washer is in the sleeve 1 and is o-opor-6e at the end of the pipe, 7 sleeve is prorA88iv9ment reduced in diameter from the 7 'end on the left in the nR8is, that is to say from the far end of the washer and in direct-ion thereof.
During this contraction, the rubber hose flows in the direction
EMI2.8
of the end, which results in the deformation of the washer 5 because the washer is held by the shoulder, causing axial displacement. Due to the resistance to deformation of the washer, control of the rubber flow is established and in the resulting system the rubber is pressed firmly against the outer surface of the insert 2 and the inner surface of the sleeve 1.
The outer diameter of the washer is as it is. leaves a clearance with respect to the internal surface of the sleeve 1 before the reduction operation begins, this clearance being absorbed during the operation
EMI2.9
The reduction was continued until a bare point the pipe came into firm contact with both the insert and the sleeve, at which time the washer also came firmly into place with the sleeve.
EMI2.10
As during its contraction the sleeve 1 itself is al1or.:é (ln !! p9t! AtZBtxaBXBa !! KZXBiatî in the same direction as the discharge of the rubber during the flow of the latter, it follows that there is little or no relative displacement between the inner surface of the sleeve 1 and the outer rubber layer, thus avoiding any abrasive action between the two during the gradual reduction of the sleeve.
The diameter of the opening in the rim @ is preferably such
EMI2.11
that, due to the reduction caused by the contraction of the sleeve 1., the wall of the opening is firmly dropped against the outer face of the insert, thus providing additional closure. This rim is curved to its junction with the wall of the sleeve, and the outer periphery of the washer is correspondingly curved.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The inner surface of the sleeve 1 may be provided with a peripheral recess which, due to the elongation of the sleeve during the reduction operations, comes into correspondence with the outer periphery of the washer, the recess being brought back onto the periphery of the washer due to the reduction in diameter of the sleeve; this provides a particularly valuable positive lock when the hose is used to conduct fluids at very high pressure.
As shown, the surfaces of the insert and the sleeve may, as is ordinarily the case, be provided with annular grooves 8,9 respectively, providing anchors for the rubber forced into these grooves during contraction.
The end of the sleeve which is remote from the end provided with a rim is open, that is to say that the sleeve has no rim at this end. ,
The gradual reduction of sleeve 1 is usually started at the end of the sleeve which is away from the flange and continues towards the flanged end, but it can be started from about the middle of the sleeve and continue. gradually on either side of this central zone;
the flow from the pipe to the washer is regulated, as described, by the washer, while the flow in the other direction is allowed by the open end of the sleeve; in this case the elongation of the sleeve during the contraction operation (which can be carried out by hammering) will occur in two directions, each in the same direction, as the two directions of flow of the rubber.
It may be noted here that due to the permitted (although controlled) flow of the pipe, the pressure exerted over the entire length of the sleeve is substantially uniform, so that the pressure gauge is not subjected to high localized stresses and therefore the metal of the manohon is more efficiently used for a given thickness than if the reduction in diameter were localized.
The grooves or grooves 8 of the insert 3 can be inclined to one side in order to allow the rubber to flow easily over these grooves or grooves during the contraction operation but so as to "bite. "the rubber if it tended to move in the other direction;
when the contraction is performed in opposite directions from a central area, the grooves or grooves on either side of the middle of the insert, will be tilted in opposite directions, as shown in the drawing . - '
The washer 5 which, if desired, may be cup-shaped and which is held against axial displacement along the insert in the direction of its engaging face by forming on the insert the small shoulder 6, up to which the washer is threaded, allows the usual clamping nut to be threaded on the insert before the washer is fitted. it is not necessary to thread the nut from the tail end of the insert,
the washer can be made integral with the insert, for example by extending it in a recess formed in the insert.
Although the invention is of general application to rubber hose couplings, it is of especially important value in its application to large-dimension hoses intended to work at high pressures, the invention ensuring easy accommodation, eg. flow (as described), large amounts of rubber for these large pipes. Also, when pipes are intended for high pressures, a metal frame 10 is embedded in the rubber of the pipe, and it is visible that with the connection according to the invention, as the frame lengthens during operation. contraction, the rubber which is in intimate contact with the frame flows with the latter.

EMI4.1
Referring to Figs. 3 and 4, the insert is made with an enlargement 11 of its external diameter 8, the end which, Qin! '1i as shown, is introduced into the end of the pipe 4.
EMI4.2
It emerges from fig.3, that the engagement of the inqartion part proqoqàe the bulge of the pipe as indicated in 1 ?, The outer sleeve 1 is Q'1p. as shown over the edge of the pipe and towards the bulge 12. When, then, the sleeve is reduced in diameter in order to engage the portion of the pipe between the bulge 12 and the end of the pipe, the end of the pipe sleeve come
EMI4.3
dra, as shown in fig. 9, in a position p, ropro to provide a support 13 to the widening II or more exactly to the bulge 12 formed in the pipe by the widening, because it will be observed that the internal diameter of the sleeve is less than the outside diameter of the bulge.
Although, as shown, it will generally be preferred to arrange the end face of the sleeve 1 so as to constitute the support, the support of the sleeve could be formed at a point intermediate its length; the length of the sleeve being such that when engaged it extends sufficiently towards the bulge 12 to ensure that the bulge will be firmly engaged at the end of the operation in which the manohon is contracted. Usually and as shown, the widening 11 on the insert 1 is set inclined or tapered, with the minimum dimension directed towards the coupling or front end of the insert, and the bearing surface of the insert. mnnchan is tilted correspondingly.
EMI4.4
The reduction dat sleeve 1 can, though. we start, CO'11start from a central region, and continue first towards the washer 5 and then towards the bulge]. 2. However, it suffices that the sleeve is gradually reduced from one end, that is, the far end of the washer, with reduction in the direction of the washer.
It will be observed that the greater the pressure tending to expel the insertion part 2 from the pipe 4, the greater the setting or sealing pressure which is exerted on the rubber entering the enlargement 11 of the insertion part and support. 13 of the sleeve; any tendency of the insert to come out will cause the grip face of the enlargement II to move towards the narrated face of the support.
EMI4.5
As it is best represented in the fis. <5, May? also shown in 'fligs, 1-4, the insert may be established with peripheral grooves or recesses i.4, 15, located such that the flange 7 and the washer 5 (which may at the 'nssembla4e # be threaded over the insert until the shoulder 6) are. caused by the reduction of the sleeve 1 to enter these grooves or recesses, so that the sleeve and the washer are positively locked with the insert as a consequence of the operation which results in the attachment of the end of the pipe between the sleeve and the insert.
EMI4.6
As depicted in the fie :. , 1 "\, and also da, nrx 7 in figure, the end of the pipe can be prepared by removing the outer reC01nr'3'I1'lt 19 rubber up to the frame 10 where a.n1re expose the ar- mature; thus, when the sleeve is reduced, it forms a firm mechanical link with the frame 10 of metal or other material; in addition to providing a mechanical bond, this arrangement also allows the
EMI4.7
establishment of electro-continuous continuity through the metal reinforcement, from the terminal fitting at one end of a section of pipe to the terminal fitting at the other end, a necessity frequently emphasized for pipe installations on locomotive vehicles Aerial.
In order to avoid any difficulty that may arise (in intro
EMI4.8
With the prepared end of the pipe in the sleeve l) due to the opening of the ends of the metal wires in the joint, a thin layer 16 of rubber can be kept at the end as shown in fig. 7 .
