<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

The present invention relates to the sealing of bottles, jars and the like, especially glass containers, of the kind which have an interrupted thread, adjacent to the opening of the vessel, which thread is intended to engage. with lugs or equivalent devices referred to below as lugs, of the cylindrical pan portion of a corresponding cover, allowing the cover to be screwed on and unscrewed without taking care to locate the beginning of the thread and without excessive rotation, disadvantages associated with containers with continuous screw thread.
The term "interlocking screw thread", which is in common use herein denotes a short multi-start thread, the individual threads being generally, but not necessarily, so short that they do not overlap in the axial direction. .
Previously, certain difficulties have been associated with containers of the kind mentioned, especially with regard to obtaining a satisfactory hermetic seal. First, any slight imperfections in the arrangement or formation of the The threads of the container or the lugs of the lid resulted in an uneven distribution of pressure between the various threads and even in a lack of engagement of one or more of the threads with the lid.
Subsequently, it was generally impossible to give rise to a suitable pressure at the seal by screwing on the lid without danger of breaking the container, and the seal pressure obtained was highly indeterminate. To allow even a moderate seam to be achieved by screwing, the covers were made of stiff metal, - usually tinplate. Finally, due to the relatively stiff construction of the lids, they generally did not yield enough during a sterilization operation to allow pressurized air to escape in cases where a tight seal was desired.
According to the present invention, a container of the aforementioned kind is closed by placing over its orifice a cover having a cylindrical side and indenting this side at a number of circumferentially spaced places to form lugs in it. situ, lugs which engage under the interrupted threads while the cover is pressed on the opening of the container.
The invention also consists of a method of sealing a container of the aforementioned species, in which the indentation and pressing of the cover on the orifice of the container is effected by relative vertical movement between the container and a head. obturator with organ? respective indenters, active at a predetermined depth below the level of the orifice of the container, 'and in which this movement is preceded by the orientation of the container by a mechanical device which causes it to assume a correct position with respect to these members indenters.
In a suitable arrangement, the containers are advanced step by step by a conveyor to a point below the shutter head, and have an asymmetry on the parts in contact with the conveyor, resulting in a predetermined orientation of the container as it arrives below. the shutter head, the latter being mounted with a corresponding orientation.
In a variant, a mechanical container orienting device may be actuated to orient the containers advanced by the conveyor, before arrival under the shutter head.
The invention further consists of a container of the aforementioned species, closed by a cover having a flowable gasket and a cylindrical face, the latter having spaced parts, indented in situ, closely engaging under the respective net members. .
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Using a suitable packing, such as a ring of flowable sealant composition, the process according to the present invention provides a hermetic seal suitable, for example, for pickles, without the aid of a vacuum. and despite any slight irregularities in the screw threads of the container. At the same time, when the container is subsequently opened, the lid behaves like an ordinary screw-on lid, and has all the advantages associated with lids of this type. If, however, one wishes to subject the container to some process in order to produce a partial vacuum therein, the lid, which may be made of thinner and softer metal than that of the stiff tinplate lids previously used, yields more readily. to release indoor air.
Preferably, the cover has a reinforced edge (thickened or with a coil) which is indented during the formation of the lugs; reinforced edge is preferably unbroken. The indentation is preferably effected by spaced apart indentor members intended to engage the cover, which are, in use, elastically urged inwardly toward the wall of the container to a predetermined depth within. below the port of the container, so that each lug is formed with substantially the same narrow grip under the respective screw thread, despite any slight oval such as is frequently present in molded glass jars.
For this purpose, sealing heads of the collar type, known under the registered trademark "Omnia", are particularly suitable.
It is understood that the container to be closed must be properly and carefully oriented (i.e. mechanically and not visually) with respect to the sealing head, so that the indentations are made under the respective screw threads where their edge lower is at a depth corresponding to a narrow grip with the lugs which are formed. This can not present any difficulties with polygonal containers because the container advance devices (guide rails of a conveyor, and / or spider advance device) can be arranged so as to present the container to the stopper head. with the required orientation predetermined.
In fact, any deviation from full symmetry present on the parts of the container in contact with the feed device, such as the bottom and side walls, can generally be used to ensure the automatic orientation of the screw thread. by the carrier.
In a preferred arrangement, the indented lugs formed in situ are parallel to the underside of the respective net 'member'. This is easily achieved by one corresponding orientation of the indenter members of the obturator head.
The most suitable metal for the cover is aluminum or a ductile aluminum alloy with an inch thickness (eg 0.008 inch to 0.012 inch). The use of tinplate is however not excluded and may be necessary for packaging vegetables in the event that the pressure produced during sterilization cannot be counterbalanced,

The fi g. 8 is a fragmentary section showing the obturation operation.
Fig. 9 is a fragmentary plan of a cover after the indentation of a lug.
The pot shown in fig. 1 comprises a body part 1, cylindrical, surmounted by an annular coil 2 and an orifice 3.
Around the side of the orifice are spaced triangular protrusions 4 each of which has a vertex 5 at its upper end and an opposite base 6 constituting a net element, the elements together forming a multiple-starting net.
In subsequent filling and sealing operations, the filled pot usually moves between guide rails in a bucket of an intermittent conveyor belt, or is held by a clip or spring clips carried by a spider. advances, or is otherwise advanced step by step with a predetermined spacing, through a series of stop positions. Above one of these, preferably immediately before that above which the obturator head is arranged, is suspended a crown member 7 (fig. 2 to 4) comprising a crown part 8 housed to slide. in a part of a concentric crown 9.
A guide bell 10 is fixed relative to the crown part 9 and hangs from the latter, the bell 10 serves to locate a pot, such as 1, on which the crown member 7 is lowered in operation. The bell 10 is screwed onto part 9 by threads 11. A compression spring 12 is coaxial with parts 8 and 9 and is housed between the latter; the spring 12 surrounds a central guide rod 13.
Spaced guide members 14 hang from the crown portion 9; their lower ends are forked so as to form inverted V-shaped recesses having an apex 15. Spaced guide members 16 hang from the crown portion 9 and their lower ends are V-shaped and terminate in a point 17. members 14 and 16 alternate and together define a cylindrical sleeve.
The crown portion 9 hangs from the end of a shaft 18 on which is slidably mounted a boss 19 located at the end of an arm 20 extending from a neighboring shutter head (not fully shown) as shown. a fig. 5. A compression spring 21 rests on the boss 19 and the crown portion 9.
In operation, when the shutter head moves downward, on a pot provided with its cover, to seal the latter, the arm 20 moves downwards and elastically depresses the crown member 7 so that the bell 10 envelops the opening of a pot not yet provided with a lid, such as bare 1, located below. As the ends 17 of the members 16 collide with the strand 2, the downward movement of the members 16 ceases and the spring 12 compresses, while the movement of the crown part 9 and the members 14 continues with the sides of the protrusions 4 sliding along. from the lower edge of the members 14 until the vertices 6 are housed in the respective vertices 15. At this point, for the small remainder of the downward movement of the arm 20, the spring 21 compresses.
