<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

The present invention relates to improvements to the insulating coating of pipes or similar devices.
The object of the invention is in particular to provide insulating elements of simple manufacture and allowing rapid and easy placement even by non-specialized personnel.
According to the invention, such an insulating element consists of two separable metal half-cylinders or shells, each shell being lined internally with a suitable insulator which is integral with it, for example by gluing and has a recessed imprint of dimensions. corresponding substantially to those of a half-pipe to be coated at least one of the two shells having in the vicinity of its free longitudinal edges of? means enabling it to be secured to the other shell, so that the assembly of the two insulating-coated shells can provide the insulating coating of a portion of pipe,
while presenting in addition on the outside a resistant metal surface
For fitting two shells with an insulating interior coating around a pipe to be insulated, various means can be provided.
According to one embodiment, one of the two shells has a folding of its free longitudinal edges to form a housing in which the corresponding free longitudinal edge of the other shell is placed.
According to another embodiment of nesting one of the two shells present internally or externally along its free longitudinal edges ,,
an added element forming with the corresponding wall portion of the shell a housing in which is placed the corresponding free longitudinal edge of the other shell According to yet another embodiment of the interlocking one of the shells presents along its free longitudinal edges an element reported, the base of which is folded towards the shell and which forms with the corresponding wall portion of this shell a housing in which the corresponding free longitudinal edge of the other shell is housed.
this latter edge having a projection intended to be anchored in said housing by virtue of the folded base of the attached element
According to one method of assembling such an element formed of two shells with the following element, the two shells of the male element are corrugated at least along the length portion which will be covered by the female element which is not corrugated.
According to a particular embodiment of the assembly of two successive elements, the two shells of the male part of the fitting are stuffed with insulation up to their end,
while the two shells of the female part of the socket are packed with insulation only up to a point spaced from their end by a distance less than the length of overlap of the parting part by the female part so as to ensure compression of the insulation in the vicinity of the assembly point.
Finally, in yet another particular embodiment, the insulating inner lining of each shell, or at. less than one of the two shells, extends at least slightly beyond the diametral assembly plane of the two shells, so as to ensure compression of the insulation at the location of the joints during the assembly of the two shells.
Other details and features of the invention will emerge from the description given below by way of non-limiting example and with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a cross-sectional view of two assembled shells.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Figures 2 and 3 show assembly variants of the two shells.
Figure 4 shows the assembly of two successive insulating elements
Figure 5 shows further details of the shells.
Metal shells 1 and 2 are used internally lined with a usual insulation 3, the latter being for example glued in the shells 1 and 2 with a water repellent. In the insulating part 3 thus secured to the shells, there is provided an indentation 4 (figures 1 and 5) whose dimensions correspond to those of a half-pipe 5 to be covered. The assembly of two shells can be carried out in various ways. In FIG. 1, the shell 1 has a longitudinal edge 6 folded back on itself to form a housing in which the longitudinal edge 7 of the shell 2 is inserted.
In FIG. 2, there is provided on the shell 1, an attached element 8, the base of which is folded back towards the shell. In the housing thus formed, can be inserted the longitudinal edge 7 of the shell 2, which has a projection 10 for hooking
In Figure 3, there is provided an insert 11 on the shell 1, the longitudinal edge 7 of the shell 2 being inserted into the housing formed by this insert 11 and the shell 1.
So that the joint between the insulators 3 of the two shells 1 and 2 does not present any irregularity in the insulation of the pipe, after assembly of the shells, said insulators 3 will be shaped as in FIG. 5 at the height of the longitudinal edges of the shells. In this way, during assembly, there will be compression between the two surfaces 12, thus eliminating any insulation defect at this point.
For the assembly of an insulating element 13 (FIG. 4) formed of two shells, with the following insulating element 14, also formed of two shells, there will be a fitting one inside the other of these two elements 13 and 14, the element 13 constituting the male element, while the element 14 constitutes the female element.
This last element 14 will be cylindrical up to its end 15, while the portion of the element 13 which is to be covered by the element 14 will be provided with corrugations 16. These will allow free expansion at the end. 'place of the joint and, moreover, will also form a drip.
So that at the location of the junction between such elements 13 and 14, there is no insulation fault, the male element 13 will be internally coated with insulation up to its end 17 while the female element 14 is only internally lined with insulation up to a point away from its outer edge 15 by a distance less than the length of the covering of the male element 13 by the female element 14. In other words, if this last element 14 covers element 13 by 5 cm, for example, it will be lined with insulation from a point located approximately 3 cm from its free edge 15. In this way, during assembly , there will be compression at the joint.
Each insulating element, formed of two shells 1 and 2 will therefore have a corrugated end and a smooth end, the first constituting the male element of an assembly, while the second constitutes the female element of the following assembly.
As shown in Figure 1, the shells may also have protuberances or depressions 18 forming drip traps, which may be especially advantageous when the insulating elements are arranged with one of the longitudinal joints of the shells, at the top.
From time to time, especially around the junction between two elements 13 and 14, metal straps 19 will be provided for tightening the shells 1 and 2 against each other.
