To produce box-end heads on bolts, etc., by cold heading tubes or bars, a process has been used to date in which the upset is effected in one, two or three strokes, executed at using stationary and / or axially movable punches, fixed in a movable punch clamp, while the blank kept the same position in a die composed of one or more 'parts (mandrel or jaws) with this that, in order to imprint a polygonal shape on the head, the punched blank was subjected to a so-called deburring operation, during which the excess material of the head was removed, thus providing for example a round bolt to hexagonal head, the delivery being finally operated using fixed punches and / or axially movable, the blank being moved,
in the intervals between strokes, between fixed and / or moving dies.
According to the present invention, the shaping of the polygonal head is carried out using one or more punches, at least one of which is provided with a device intended to act in a radial direction, this shaping for - can be carried out with or without moving the blank between the different workstations.
The invention will be explained below with reference to an exemplary embodiment of a device according to the invention, shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is an axial section of a blank punch.
Figure 2 is an axial section of a compressor punch.
FIG. 3 is an axial section of a finishing punch.
FIG. 4 is a section along IV-IV of FIG. 2.
Figure 5 shows the shape of the workpiece, after it has undergone the action of the various punches.
The blank punch represented by FIG. 1 comprises at its working end a circular recess 1 with a rounded or chamfered bottom, the volume of this recess being generally in accordance with that of the head which is to be executed.
The compressor punch shown in FIG. 2 comprises a punch body 3 provided with a central, cylindrical recess 4, in which a piston 5 is movably mounted. Between the piston 5 and the bottom 6 of the recess 4 is provided a pressure spring 7. The piston 5 rests on a compression member 8 which moves in the recess 4 and which has in the center a hexagonal recess 9 with a chamfered bottom 10. The compression member has a central orifice in which is mounted a stop member 11 with a head 12 contained in the recess 9, the upper end of the stop member 11 being screwed into the punch body 3.
The compression member has at its base a part 13, flared in the manner of a cone, which cooperates, in the manner described below, with a conical surface 14 integral with a ring 15 screwed onto the punch body 13.
The compression member is divided into six segments 16.
The finishing punch shown in FIG. 3 comprises a punch body 21, at the lower end of which is fixed a hollow cylinder 22 which receives a piston 23 mounted to slide longitudinally and provided with a central bore 24 where in turn moves a second piston 25, which actuates a punch 26, the latter having a hexagonal section in its lower part and moving in an extension 27 of corresponding shape, of the bore 24.
The bore 24 has at its upper end an enlarged portion 28 which receives a pressure spring 29, one end of which is applied.

then on the punch body 21, while the other rests on the piston 230
A stop pin is screwed into the cylinder 220
The device works as follows: a bolt blank 30 is inserted into a workpiece holder 35, as is known per se.
The punch holder, which comprises the three punches according to Figures 1, 2 and 3, is brought into a position such that the recess of the blank punch is concentrically above the bolt blank 30, after which the punch executes a blow, so that it forms, on this blank, a head 31, fig. 5. The blank punch moves away and the compressor punch is brought into a concentric position above the head 31, the compression member then occupying the position indicated in phantom.
During the stroke of the punch, the compression member 8 slides upwards relative to the punch body 3, against the action of the spring 7 and, as a result of the wedging effect between the two surfaces 13,14, the sectors 16 are pushed towards each other in the direction of the center, which imprints on the head 31 the shape 32 shown in figure 5.
The compressor punch moves away and the finisher punch is brought into a concentric position above the head. The stroke of the punch is applied and the piston 25 pushes the actual punch 26 against the head 32, which gives the latter the final shape 33 shown in figure 50
