The present invention relates to a connecting rod composed of several parts, the elements of which can be screwed relative to one another in order to adjust the length. When presses are driven by means of a connecting rod, this length adjustment makes it possible to compensate for the different heights of the tools. When a tool has an insufficient height, the person who takes care of the adjustment of the tools tends to lengthen the connecting rod, possibly beyond its range of adjustment.
The invention resides in the fact of providing a safety arrangement on the connecting rod, which prevents the elongation of the connecting rod beyond an allowable adjustment range. As a result, damage is avoided, which is caused by inadmissible buckling and upsetting forces of the screw thread connecting the elements of the connecting rod, in the event of excessive elongation.
In one embodiment of the invention, the safety arrangement has a stop preventing the screwing of the elements of the connecting rod beyond the allowable adjustment range. The connecting rod elements can, after the continuation of the screwing operation has been prevented by the stopper, be screwed in the opposite direction, with a view to shortening the connecting rod.
In one embodiment of the invention, the safety arrangement has a bolt entering a notch in the screw thread connecting the connecting rod members.
According to the invention, this embodiment can be modified in such a way that the side of the notch disposed in the direction of rotation of elongation of the screw is at a steep slope. * While the opposite side is flattened, so that After penetrating the bolt into the notch, the connecting rod members can be rotated in the direction of rotation which shortens the connecting rod which drives the bolt out of the notch.
Other characteristics are indicated in the description which follows of an exemplary embodiment of the invention, in combination with the claims and the drawing.
FIG. 1 shows a connecting rod partly in elevation view, partly in longitudinal section.
Figure 2 is a section taken along line A-B of Figure 1.
Figure 3 shows a detail.
A connecting rod half 2, attached to the connecting rod big end 1, of a connecting rod having two elements which can be screwed with respect to each other in order to modify the length, has a threaded axial bore 3, in which it is possible screw a connecting rod pivot 4. flats a radial bore 5 leading to the bore 3 is fixed a guide member 6, in the axial bore of which is guided a ratchet bolt 8. The bolt 8 has a narrowing and ends by an annular front surface 9. Between a shoulder 10 of the inner wall of the guide member 6 and the front surface 9 of the ratchet bolt is clamped a compression spring 11, which surrounds the narrowed rod 12 of the bolt and which apply the ratchet bolt against the connecting rod pivot threads.
In the connecting rod pivot 4 is formed a notch 13, which has a flattened side 14 and a steeply sloping side 15. The notch 13 in the pivot 4 and the bore 5 in the wall of the threaded bore 3 are arranged. in such a way that the locking bolt penetrates under the action of the spring 12 into the notch, when the pivot 4 has been screwed out of the connecting rod half 2 by the distance 16 which represents the admissible elongation. The steeply sloping flank 15 of the notch against the ratchet bolt prevents further rotation of the pivot 4

in the direction of elongation.
As the side 14 of the notch 13 is flattened, the pivot 4 can be turned in the direction of the shortening of the connecting rod, after the bolt 4 has entered the notch 13. In this case the side 14 drives out the bolt d. 'snap 8 of notch 14.
At its lower end the ratchet bolt may have a shape such that it can be removed in order to separate the two connecting rod members 2 and 4, and that there is a safety device which prevents it from slipping. escapes when the connecting rod pivot 4 is completely unscrewed from the bore 7.
