The invention relates to an air-cooled cylinder head, more particularly for injection engines with compression ignition and in which the combustion chamber is provided in the cylinder head.
The stresses to which such a cylinder head is subjected are partially in contradiction with the fact that, on the one hand, a minimum of heat must be transmitted to the cylinder head and, from the latter, to the cooling air, and that , on the other hand, the heat transmitted to the cylinder head must be evacuated as quickly as possible in order to avoid its accumulation and, consequently, the tensions which may result. '' Therefore, the part of the head The cylinder in contact with the highly compressed combustion gases should preferably be made of a heat-resistant material, while the other part of said head should be made of a material of high thermal conductivity.
According to the invention, the cylinder head is made in two parts so that the part in contact with the highly compressed combustion gases and comprising the combustion chamber and the seats, valves, is made of a material resistant to pressure. heat, while the part which is in contact only with the decompressed combustion gases is made of light metal with high thermal conductivity; the two parts being clamped firmly against each other by flat faces and by suitable means, for example screws.
One embodiment, given by way of non-limiting example, is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 shows an axial section of a cylinder head comprising an exhaust valve and two intake valves; said section being made in a plane passing through the axis of a section of the intake valves and the axis of the exhaust valve and emerging in the axis of the cylinder bore.
Fig. 2 shows an exemplary embodiment of the connection by means of socket screws between the two parts of the cylinder head.
Part 1 of the cylinder head, made of a heat-resistant material and comprising the combustion chamber and the valve seats, can be made either as a forged part or as a cast from a suitable alloy cast iron. In the first case, the combustion chamber 2 and part 3 of the intake channel in part 1 of the cylinder head can be executed with sufficient accuracy by means of precision forging so that no more be machined later. The part 1 of the cylinder head is advantageously executed in the form of a cylindrical disc so that the cooling ribs 4 can be produced by turning with maximum simplicity.
The seat 5 of the exhaust valve is provided in the wall 6 of the combustion chamber 2, the wall opposite the cylinder chamber and the borehole 7 of the valve seat is drilled up to the side of the part 1 of the head cylinder opposite to the cylinder chamber. The holes 8 of the seats 9 of the intake valves are drilled up to the forged part 3 of the intake channel common to the two intake valves.
A bore 10 is provided in part 1, at the side facing the chamber of the cylinder, in order to ensure that said part 1 of the cylinder head is coaxial with the bore of the cylinder; the body of the cylinder engaging in said bore 10, while the entire cross section of combustion chamber 2 opens into the cylinder chamber at the bottom of bore 10, said bottom also carrying the valve seats of 'admission.
When part 1 of the cylinder head is made of an alloy cast iron, the structure corresponds in all its details to that of the execution in a forged steel part described above and the combustion chamber 2 as well as the part. 3 of the intake duct can be

cut with sufficient accuracy when casting by means of a precision casting process. In addition, in order to save on machine tool machining, it is possible to first cast the holes 7 and 8 for the valve seats.
Part 11, cast in light metal, of the cylinder head comprises only the exhaust channel 12 guided to the side of part 11 of the cylinder head, part 13 of the intake channel common to the two valves of admission and opening to the side of part 11 opposite to the channbre of the cylinder and the holes 14 and 15 serving to receive the guide bushes of the valves. On the side of the part 11 opposite the cylinder chamber are provided recesses 16 and 17 with the grooves 18, coaxial with the bores 14 and 15 and serving as a starting surface for the valve springs Part 11 of the cylinder head is provided with known manner of cooling ribs on the side of the exhaust channel 12 and between the latter and the part 13 of the intake channel.
The connection between parts 1 and 11 of the cylinder head is made by means of socket screws 19 provided with a head 20 and slots 21 serving to receive a wrench and passing through holes 22 of part 11 of the cylinder head and which are screwed into the threads 23 of part 1 of the cylinder head. The socket screws 19 have holes 24 for receiving screws for fixing the cylinder on the crank boot. However, it is also possible to use any other connection between the two parts 1 and 11 of the cylinder head.
For example, the socket screws 19 can be neglected and the screws used to fix the cylinder on the crank box, can be used in m @ m3 time to tighten against each other the two parts 1 and 11 of the cylinder head. In addition, it is also possible to screw together the two parts 1 and 11 of the cylinder head by means of solid bolts so as to be able to remove the two parts in a single block forming the cylinder head and not in the form of spare parts.
