<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Ingots introduced into basement or pit furnaces do not require rapid reheating, owing to the high temperature of their core and the still relatively high temperature which results therefrom at their surface , high use of the heat supplied. It is however essential. to obtain uniform heating, \) to achieve a uniform supply of heat over the entire surface of the loaded material. in order to prevent local overheating and waste to the water as well as to avoid the formation of slag.
In accordance with the Invention. a uniform atmosphere is achieved in the basement ovens. by the fact that a part of the burnt gases released from the furnace chamber during its heating. is constantly or intermittently aspirated. in an adjustable manner, from said furnace chamber, by means of one or more burners in the form of injectors which are used for heating, and are circulated with the burnt gases produced by the burners.
Thanks to such a heating process. a large part of the burnt gases still at a high temperature is introduced again into the furnace chamber, directly after leaving said furnace chamber., therefore before entering the heat exchanger and without yielding any other heat, so that during this circulation of the burnt gases only the heat requirement corresponding to the temperature difference existing between the temperature of the surface of the charged material and the heating temperature needs to be supplemented by the supply of fuel cool through the burners o Another advantage lies in the fact that the furnace charge is surrounded by a fairly large volume of gas of a uniform temperature,
This excludes the risk of local overheating for the load.
The quantity of the burnt gases to be supplied as well as that of the fresh burnt gases to be mixed with them and formed during combustion with the aid of the burners can be regulated by means of adjustment arranged in the channel for circulation of the burnt gases. as well as by the speed of supply of fuel through the burners. The adjustment takes place in this case. by automatic temperature control devices which act either on a throttle valve arranged in the flue gas circulation channel. or on a throttle member arranged on the burner manifold.
The invention also aims at an installation for implementing the method, in which the burner opens out in the manner of an injector in the upper part of the oven chamber and in which the diffuser is connected with the channel. for the burnt gases leaving from the lower part of the aforementioned furnace chamber.
The invention has the advantage. vis-à-vis a return of the burnt gases to the furnace chamber using a fan, after leaving a heat exchanger, that the heat of the hot burnt gases is used directly, without these pass through refractory recuperators which. Firstly. take up a lot of space and are expensive, and difficult, on the other hand. to keep waterproof. Another essential advantage resides in the elimination of the fan for hot gases, a member which is also expensive and seldom operates without being disturbed.
Inventionsara. described in more detail below with reference to the appended drawing showing in vertical section a preferred embodiment of the installation according to the invention.
Pans the chamber 1. of the furnace opens, above the load, a burner 2. disposed in the masonry 7. This burner 2 is fed, by a nozzle 3. the combustible gas ,. preferably mixed with air The nozzle of the grinder 2 is made of a highly refractory material.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The burnt gases from the flame of the burner 2 burning in the chamber 1 of the furnace are withdrawn from the lower part by a channel and arrive, passing through a slag pit, into the burnt gas channel. The flue gas channel, connected to the lower part of the furnace chamber 1, is connected with a vertical cireulation channel 8 arranged in the masonry 7. The nozzle ± of the burner 2 opens out like an injector , in said burner 2 so that, as a result of the depression originating in the diffuser, part of the burnt gases sucked into the burnt gas channel is sent to the burner 2.
The resulting mixture of gas, air and flue gas burns with a long flame over the charge in the furnace chamber. The hot burnt gases from the flame encode their high heat at the surface of the charge and are for the most part re-circulated through the burner forming the injector.
The temperature of the oven chamber 1 is adjusted using a thermal adjustment device not shown in the drawing and protruding into the oven chamber. In the flue gas circulation channel is arranged an adjusting member which, in the drawing. a- the form of a register, but can also be constituted by a throttle valve or the like.
The burnt gases escaping from the burnt gas channel are still directed, before entering the chimney, through a steel recuperator in which they yield mainly to the air admitted into the burner 2. or into the the case of heating with lean gas, also with this gas, their heat having a relatively low temperature.
CLAIMS. la) Process for circulating the burnt gases in the furnaces in the basement. characterized in that a part of the burnt gases is sucked constantly or intermittently. in an adjustable manner, from the oven chamber by one or more burners serving to heat said oven.
