The present invention relates to an enlarging device for transparent image carriers, for example films, negatives and the like, of new construction. In magnification instruments of known construction, a capacitor or a double capacitor arranged between the lamp and the object is used to concentrate the light rays into beams. The lenses of this condenser must, for negative formats of 13 x 18 or 18 x 24 cm. for example, to have diameters of corresponding size, so that they become very heavy and expensive.
They also have the disadvantage of an always irregular light distribution, since in essence the light intensity is always greater near the optical axis than in the marginal regions, which has a detrimental effect in case of strong enlargement.
According to the present invention, there is proposed, in an enlarging instrument, in order to concentrate the light coming from the light source into a beam, not a capacitor composed of lenses, but a collecting mirror of non-spherical shape, with respect to which the light source is arranged in such a way that the condensed or concentrated light in a beam, after passing through the object, for example a photographic negative, is projected in such a way on a lens, that it is projected with the desired magnification on a reproduction surface.
In this arrangement the special capacitor composed of lenses must be eliminated.
It is advantageous to give the non-spherical mirror a shape such that the optical axis of the mirror does not coincide with the axis of the instrument, while the light source is moved laterally, so that it does not no longer appears to be arranged above the object. The purpose of this arrangement is to eliminate as far as possible calorific actions by convection on the object, for example a photographic negative, while the light reflected by the mirror is not obstructed in any way by the lamp socket or other elements supporting the lamp. In this case the curvature of the mirror can be chosen in a manner which suits the purpose. The mirror can in particular have in its horizontal section plane as well as in its vertical section plane, several different radii of curvature.
In this embodiment a maximum of the light emitted by the light source is used and reflected in a concentrated beam form.
The illumination of the negative is then completely uniform and much more intense than with a capacitor. Another important advantage of this arrangement lies in the fact that in the event of replacement of the objective by another objective of different focal length, only the light source has to be adjusted. On the other hand, in a magnifying instrument with condenser lenses, changing the objective also involves changing the condenser lenses.
The instrument constructed according to the invention, therefore equipped with a non-spherical mirror condensing the light, can moreover be provided with all the necessary auxiliary instruments. The mirror as well as the lamp can, singly or in conjunction with the lens holder, be mounted by sliding, in an adjustable manner, or by rotation. Likewise, the objective can in a known manner be mounted in an adjustable manner.
The accompanying drawing shows an embodiment given by way of example and schematically of an enlarging instrument constructed according to the invention.
Fig. 1 shows the enlarging instrument, partly in side elevational view, partly in vertical section. / FIG. 2 is a section taken along line A-B of FIG. 1 through the casing of

the instrument.
The reference numeral 1 designates the base plate of the instrument, 2 designates the usual foot with an arm 3 of adjustable height and possibly mounted by rotation or by pivoting, which carries a casing 4. Inside the casing , and according to the embodiment: shown, there is a non-spherical mirror 5, which collects the light emitted by the light source 6 arranged laterally and which reflects this light on the object 7 to be enlarged. The object 7 can be put in place in a known manner, for example introduced from the front into the slot. The image is enlarged by the objective 9, which is arranged at the lower end of the bellows 10, the latter being carried by an arm 11, which is also mounted on the foot 2 in an adjustable manner in height.
In order to place the mirror in the most advantageous position with respect to the lamp 6, it can be mounted by pivoting on the bearing 12 fixed to the casing 4, so that it can be blocked using a handle 13 or the like. The height adjustment of the casing 4 and of the object support 8 connected thereto may have been linked, for example, by means of a lever 14 as well as a toothed wheel actuated by the latter and not shown, which is meshed with a rack 15, which is fixed to the foot 2. The adjustment of the arm 11 with the lens support takes place in a similar manner by means of a lever 16 and a toothed wheel controlled by the latter, which is also engaged with the rack.
The light source must also be mounted by sliding and in an adjustable manner, for example in such a way that its socket 18 is moved telescopically in a lamp holder 19 connected to the casing 4.
It is also possible to provide all the special apparatus usually employed, with instruments of this type, such as, for example, switches, drawers, iris diaphragms, etc.
