<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

METHOD OF MANUFACTURING POROUS LEAVES IN ORGANOSYNTHETIC MATERIAL.
There are many processes for making porous products from natural or synthetic rubber or from various synthetic products.
It is known, in particular, that in order to prepare porous sheets in a thermoplastic synthetic product such as a polyvinyl substance, in the state of grains, one starts with a powdered substance and the grains are made to weld by their softening. under the action of solvents, swelling agents, plasticizers or others. Usually heat or pressure is involved.
It is difficult, by this process, to obtain a degree of porosity of variable but well-determined value, because, due to the softening of the grains and their welding, this porosity risks suddenly disappearing if the proportions of the constituents, the conditions temperature, pressure and duration of treatment are not exactly observed.
It is also known that porous rubber articles have already been manufactured from a mixture of granular rubber and an emulsion, the welding of the rubber grains being obtained by gelation of the emulsion followed by vulcanization; this manufacture can only be carried out under well-defined conditions as to the composition and the proportions of the various components of the mixture.
The object of the present invention is to allow the use of a similar process in the case of thermoplastic synthetic products.
It relates to a process for preparing porous objects, such as accumulator separators, from a mixture of an emul-

Zion with a material in the pulverulent state the welding of the grains of the pulverulent alteration, being obtained by gelation of the emulsion, characterized in that the pulverulent material is a polymer or a mixture of polymers, in particular of the family of vinyl derivatives , and the emulsion is a latex of a substance or of a group of substances of the polymer type which may belong to the family of vinyl derivatives.
The pulverulent material and the substance of the emulsion must be compatible with each other, that is to say that the particles of the emulsion must be able to attach themselves to the grains of the pulverulent material so as to establish a bond between the different grains. It is the interstices which remain between the particles and the grains which give porosity to the assembly obtained.
It follows that the substance in emulsion may be the same as the pulverulent material, or else it may simply be one of the constituents of this material if the latter is a mixture, it is not excluded however that the substance in emulsion and the powder material are of different composition.
It is obvious that the porosity will depend on the size of the grains and the number of interstices which will remain between the grains; it can therefore be adjusted on the one hand, by the size of the grains and, on the other hand, by the average distance between two grains, that is to say that this porosity can be modified by the pressure exerted on the 'together during its manufacture; given the large number of particles which provide the bond between two neighboring grains, it will be much easier, in the process according to the invention, to control the porosity by pressure than in the known processes.
The gelation of the emulsion will be produced by any means known in the art, that is to say either by thermal evaporation of water, or by the action of a drying agent, or by the action of a coagulating or thermo-coagulating agent, or by any other means, if necessary, the action of several of these means can be combined together.
As a pulverulent material which can be used, there will be mentioned and this simply by way of example, grains of a pure vinyl material such as ppalyyinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride or their copolymers, but this material may be combined with a substance compatible with it, like nitrile rubber. As emulsion, it is possible to adopt a latex of a substance or of a group of substances, belonging to the same group as the grains to be bound.
It may be advantageous, when using thermoplastic products, to incorporate one or more plasticizers to give a certain flexibility to the thermoplastic substance obtained from the latex, which gives greater flexibility to the assembly obtained and may, in to some extent, facilitate the shaping of this set. This or these plasticizers will be introduced into the emulsion before it is mixed with the pulverulent material.
The emulsion can moreover contain still other substances, that is to say mineral or organic fillers. They may be colloidal fillers added to the emulsion with a view to acting on the viscosity by absorbing part of its water; these fillers can also be provided to modify the mechanical resistance of the organosynthetic substance originating from the emulsion.
The invention will be particularly advantageous in its application to the manufacture of separators for accumulators; for lead-acid batteries, the corresponding porous material having to resist the action of sulfuric acid, the grains and the binding substance resulting from the latex will have to meet requirements. Thermo-plastic derivatives
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
ques polyvinyliques are to be retained in this case.
The manufacture of porous sheets for accumulators can be carried out in various ways; for example by scraping a paste, or else by dusting and compacting a wet powder on an endless ribbon; depending on whether it is desired to prepare smooth or ribbed separators, the endless tape will itself be smooth or ribbed. It is also grazed, after partial drying, proceed with calendering the sheets which allows glazing of the surfaces and obtaining low thicknesses, the calender will be smooth or profiled depending on whether the separators must be smooth or ribbed. Finally, in the case of large thicknesses, the pressure can be brought into play.
Some details will be given on the manufacture of porous sheets for separators in polyvinyl derivatives, after dusting and tamping with a wet powder, that is to say a mixture of powdery polyvinyl and vinyl latex, on a tape. endlessly smooth, the sheet thus produced was dried at 80, peeled off the tape and subjected to a temperature of about 1400 for about two minutes, which produced gelation of the latex and improved the mechanical qualities of the sheets.
If the porous sheet is to be ribbed, the smooth tape of wet powder is partially dried at 80, then is subjected to the action of a profiled calender; the sheet is then dried completely, still at 80, and finally undergoes gelation at 140.
To get a clearer idea, but of course not limiting the compositions which can be used by the process according to the invention, reference will be made to the following two production examples: EXAMPLE I. The following compound latex is prepared in a mixer:
