<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
10 désigne l'accoudoir central selon l'invention.
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

SEAT WITH RETRACTABLE ARMREST.
The present invention relates to an improvement in armrests for seats and in particular aims to provide a construction in which the armrest can easily be moved from its normal position without removing it from the seat.
Another object is to provide an armrest which can easily be folded or retracted while in position on the seat.
The accompanying drawings show the invention as applying to a two-seater aircraft chair, but it should be understood that this embodiment is given by way of example only and that the invention may be extended to include: apply to other kinds of seats.
In the aircraft seating industry, it is customary to mount a central armrest on the seat. However, these armrests are not retractable, and they are mounted in such a way that when the armrest is retracted, it is necessary to remove it completely from the seat.This has drawbacks because the armrest may be damaged or damaged. to get lost.
As will be seen below, the present invention is described and shown as applying not only to devion seats, but also to seats with folding backs, that is to say which can be folded over the cushions. seat when not in use. It is understood that this is given only by way of example, and that the invention also applies to seats with non-folding backrests.
The improved seat according to the invention, in addition to the fact that it allows the armrest to be retracted without removing it from the seat, has another
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
advantage in that when folded down, it fits under the top of the seat cushions, allowing a person to lie down on both seats, if desired, and when the backrests are foldable, the armrest retracts and does not interfere with folding.
In the attached drawings:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the invention relating to a pair of seats for airplanes, all of its elements, including the central armrest, being deployed,
Figure 2 is a similar view with the armrest and folded backrests,
Figure 3 is a partial view, partly in section, showing the assembly used for the armrest, the elements being deployed; and
Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 3 but the armrest being retracted.
In the drawings, 2 and 4 indicate a pair of seats mounted on a common frame 6. Each seat is provided with a folding backrest 8, but as stated above, the invention can be applied to seats whose backrests are rigid.
10 denotes the central armrest according to the invention.
With particular reference to Figures 3 and 4, it will be noted that the armrest 10 comprises a U-shaped metal frame 12, provided as usual with suitable padding 14.
Another U-shaped metal element 18, attached to the groin 16 of the frame of the acco @ doir 12, is disposed between the two edges of the U-shaped frame 12. The flanges 20 of element 18 are roughly triangular in elevation and slope downward toward the front or outer end of frame 12.
22 denotes the central bar of the seat frame while 24 and 26 indicate the front and rear side bars respectively of the frame, the seat frame thus forming a rigid structure.
Two consoles 28 and 30 are attached to the central bar 22 or are integrally with it, and two spaced metal tubes 32 and 34 extend upward from these consoles towards the element 18.
The upper end of tube 32 is hinged to flanges 20 of member 18 near the anterior end of the flanges, as indicated at 36, while tube 34 is hinged at 38 to flanges 20 near l rear end of ledges. The lower end of tube 32 is hinged at 40 on bracket 28, and tube 34 is hinged at 42 on bracket 30.
With the armrest in the deployed position, the tubes 32 and 34, which might better be called support rods, are tilted from the horizontal, with the pivots 36 and 38 being offset from the pivots 40 and 42. A locking arm 44 is provided to prevent the armrest from folding and pivots around the same pivot as the upper end of the tube or connecting rod 34. This arm extends beyond the tube or connecting rod 32 and it has a notch 46 @ arranged to engage with a pin 48 protruding from tube 32 to hold arm 44 in the operating or locking position.
The outer end of the locking arm can be provided with a handle 50 within easy reach of the person occupying seat 2 or 4, so that by simply lifting the arm 44 slightly and applying slight pressure to the top of the armrest, the latter retracts from the position shown in Figure 1 to that shown in Figure 2 and shown in more detail in Figure 3.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
In order to keep the locking arm 44 in the locking position, its rear end 52 is extended slightly beyond the pivot 38, and one end of a spring 54 is fixed to this extension 52, the other end of which is attached to the 'one of the flanges 20 of the element 18.
The upper ends of each of the tubes or connecting rods 32 and 34 are notched, as shown at 56, to receive the locking arm and leave the latter the necessary play.
The extent of the upward movement of the armrest, that is to say from its retracted position to its deployed position, is limited by the contact of the lower end of the tube or connecting rod 32 with the bottom of a groove 58 open in the console 28 and which receives the end of the tube or connecting rod.
It can therefore be seen that the invention provides a construction whereby if a single person wishes to stretch out on both seats, or if for any other reason it is necessary to retract the central arm, it is not necessary, as for old arrangements, remove the armrest entirely from the seat, but simply lift the locking arm, then tilt the armrest downwards using the tubes or connecting rods located between the cushions of the two seats, as shown in FIG. 2. It can be seen that if the seats are of a type allowing the backrests to be folded up, the latter can then be folded up onto the cushions forming the seats, as shown in FIG. 2.
It is understood that changes can be made to the details of the construction and the arrangement of the elements described above, without thereby departing from the spirit of the invention.
