<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

SHOCKING PAD FOR THE FEET.
The present invention relates to shock absorbing pads for the feet, and other devices used for example for the protection of injuries to the extremities of the body such as the joints of the foot.
01 is already familiar with shock absorbing foot pads which are not designed to fit equally to right and left feet (or hands), and which are held in place by elastic bands or by adhesive surfaces or layers or tapes .
The invention proposes in particular to produce shock absorbing pads for the feet, which adjust themselves in position and which are held in place, for example under the eminence at the base of the big toe, or against a onion, without the use of tapes or adhesives while being simple and inexpensive to manufacture, and which are not so thick as to interfere with the wearer.
According to the invention, such a device comprises a tampon having a loop integral with it in order to introduce therein a finger or a toe such as the big toe, so that the tampon is held in place on a diseased part such as a bunion. . The loop is formed by a lobe of the plug in the same plane as this plug and having an opening.
The lobe and the pad can be cut from the same piece of sheet material such as rubber which may have a thin sheet of latex molded into or glued to this material.
The opening of the lobe can be given any suitable shape which provides a satisfactory grip or retention of the tampon and which allows
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
to the latter to apply naturally against the diseased part.
The invention will be better understood on reading the following description with reference to the appended drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a tampon according to the invention for the left foot; the figure is a plan view similar to figure 1, but showing a buffer for the right foot and provided with ventilation holes; Figure 3 is a cross section taken along line III-III of Figure 2, and viewed in the direction of the arrows, for an embodiment provided with additional layers of material, and Figure 4 is a section similar to that of Figure 3 , but on a smaller scale, showing an alternative embodiment.
The pad 10 shown in Figure 1 is intended for the eminence at the base of the big toe, it is cut from a single sheet of elastic material and has a lobe 12 in the form of a loop integral with the pad and cut from the same sheet of material.
A suitable material is a foamed rubber sheet 14, i.e., a latex cellular structure the cells of which communicate with each other and with the cells on the outer surface, so that ventilation is provided at the outer surface. through the buffer. A surface of the sheet 16, usually that which faces outward when the tampon is in place, may have a cover consisting of a relatively thin sheet 18 of normally impermeable latex with a smooth exterior surface; the latex used for rubber sheets that dentists apply to teeth to keep them dry during an operation is suitable for this purpose. The covering is fixed to the sheet 14 in which the pad is cut, by vulcanization or by gluing.
Over or in place of this cover, a layer of fabric 20, such as a piece of tightly woven cotton fabric, can be attached to the sheet from which the pad is cut. When using these latex or fabric covers, and also foam rubber if desired, these covers may have a number of spaced holes 22 to allow ventilation of the device.
In a pad for the protection of the eminence at the base of the big toe of the right foot, as shown in Figure 2, the pad consists of a sheet of elastic material of approximately oval shape showing on the left side, on its perimeter 26 of larger radius, a lobe 12 of approximately semicircular ring with a central opening 28 smaller than the lobe but of a similar shape. The opening may be provided with a "V" shaped notch 24 in the region where the lobe connects to the tampon to facilitate proper placement of the tampon with respect to the eminence or protrusion at the bottom. base of the big toe.
A tampon for the left foot (as in Figure 1) is similar to that for the right foot, except that the disposition-like lobe is located on the right side of the tampon.
When these tampons are intended to protect other parts of the body, such as bunions for example, the lobes 12 are arranged on the tampons in places such as these tampons, when, for example, a user's toe has passed through. through the opening of the lobe adjust themselves properly in position to protect the diseased part, such as a bunion. The openings 28 may have any shape suitable for facilitating the desired correct positioning of the buffer.
When it is desired to provide additional protection to a bunion, for example, or to raise the eminence at the base of the big toe, a soft tampon 30, preferably of a concavo-convex shape, can be glued onto the tampon.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
for example, foam rubber, as shown in Figure 4. If desired, the pad with or without a soft pad, may have a smooth rubber surface on one side, the other side having a gripping surface 32 to help it stay in place against the foot; o @ can mold this outer rubber surface with the pad or glue it to it later. The central portion of the soft pad may be reduced in thickness, or cut away, to help cushion a bunion or callus on the protrusion at the base of the big toe, for example.
The edges of the pad may be serrated, as indicated at 34, and / or bevelled, as at 36, or be terminated in any other way desired.
