<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
1 partie supérieure du carter extérieur en fonte ; 1* partie inférieure de ce carter bride au refoulement de la partie inférieure, enveloppe d'usure en forme de volute, sans soudure de préféren- ce en acier moulé électrique au manganèse;

<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

GRAVEL AND SAND PUMP.
In suction dredging, use is made of centrifugal pumps. Sand and gravel, mixed with water, are sucked axially through a suction line in the pump impeller and driven radially outwards between its vanes o The pressure in the pump's compression chamber delivers the product conveyed, on the one hand, into the discharge pipe and, on the other hand, returns a part of it into the suction chamber through the interstices existing between the wheel and the casing. This results in particularly rapid and significant erosion of the walls of the casing and of the wheel at the interstices, due to the friction exerted at these points by the sand rotated by the paddles.
In order to eliminate the interstitial flow, it has already been proposed to close the rotor on both sides and to have a seal between the walls of the latter and the casing. This construction is not satisfactory. In fact, during the change of direction from the axial direction to the radial direction imparted to the product conveyed by the rotor, the latter is more or less offset axially due to the pressure differences, which causes the width of the gaps to vary. and makes the seals ineffective.
Centrifugal pumps with an axially sealed paddle wheel on the drive and suction side, without cleaning with clean water, are also known, as are other pumps which include cleaning with clear water between the rotor and the housing, but no impeller seal.
The subject of the invention is a centrifugal pump without interstitial circulation, which comprises a seamless wear casing, inserted into the cast iron casing, and preferably made of electric manganese cast steel. According to the invention, the interstitial flow is eliminated thanks to the fact that the impeller has an axial sealing device on the side of the drive and the suction and that clear water is sent through the interstices existing between the rotor and the envelope, under a pressure greater than that prevailing in the pressure chamber of the pump.
The axial sealing of the wheel produced in accordance with the invention on the end of
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
the drive shaft and the wheel hub on the suction side do not change under the inaction of axial thrusts and cleaning with clean water effectively prevents the penetration of sand and gravel into the interstices existing between the rotating members and the housing.
Figures 1 to 5 of the accompanying drawing show, in section, an exemplary embodiment of the object of the invention. The meanings of the reference numbers are as follows
1 upper part of the cast iron outer casing; 1 * lower part of this housing flange to the discharge of the lower part, wear casing in the form of a volute, seamless, preferably in electrically molded manganese steel;
2 'spout provided on the wear casing by which the glue rests on the flange 1 ";
2 "flanges through which the wear jacket rests in the 1-1 'housing; rotor or paddle wheel;
4 fast-pitch nut,
5 threaded shaft with rapid pitch,
6 cast iron box :,
7 wear box fixed,
8 flanged cover on the suction side,
8 'drive side flanged cover hard chrome wear ring mounted on the shaft end, suction side, of the rotor,
10 cuffs mounted around the ring 9
11 grease rings 12. grease nipple, 12 pressurized water connection, 14 control port
15 wear washers on the flanged covers.
FIG. 1 represents, on a larger scale, the pump part, denoted by A in FIG. 2, of known centrifugal pumps. The gap between the wheel 3 and the wear washer 15 is not closed. As a result, the sand-laden water enters from the discharge chamber to the suction chamber, which naturally causes rapid wear of the wear washer and the paddle wheel.
Figures 2 to 5 show the centrifugal pump according to the invention.
Figures 3 and 5 are views, on a larger scale, of portions A and B of Figure 2. It can be seen that on the side of the drive and the suction, the paddle wheel comprises an axial sealing device consisting of: by the sleeves 10. On the suction side, the cylindrical sealing surface is represented by a hard chrome wear ring 4 threaded onto the hub of the wheel forming the end of the shaft. Between the two sealing sleeves 10 is a grease ring 11, of a type known per se which receives the lubricant through the conduit 12. Through the connection 13, clear cleaning water is brought under a higher pressure. to that of the pump delivery chamber.
The sabe can therefore no longer penetrate into the interstices between the rotor and the wall of the casing and exert its abrasive action there.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The axial sealing device according to the invention retains all its effectiveness in the case of axial thrust.
This arrangement also enables the housing to be established in a much more robust form than hitherto. For this purpose, the one-piece wear casing 2 is inserted into the two-piece cast iron housing.
1.1 'and the walls of the last pe located opposite the rotor are provided with wear washers 15.
These and the wear casing 2¯ are preferably made of a material whose wear resistance is greater than that of the outer casing, for example electric manganese cast steel, The wear casing 2 is clamped by its flanges 2 "between the upper or lower part of the cast iron casing and the side flange covers 8,8 'on which the wear washers are located. The wear envelope preferably corresponds to uniform wear thereof. For this this thickness is greater on the narrowed side than on the widened side of the volute, as shown in section in FIG. 4. A nozzle 2 ' provided at the discharge port of the wear casing 2 comes to rest against the flange 1 ".
An opening 14 is provided on the bottom of the outer cast iron casing, through which water escapes when the wear casing is deteriorated and must be replaced.
CLAIMS. l.- Centrifugal pump, particularly intended for conveying sand and gravel, characterized by a casing (2) in the form of a volute, in one piece, which is housed in a two-piece cast iron casing (l, l ') and is completed by wear washers (15) arranged between the walls of the paddle wheel and the flanged covers of the housing.
