<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
positif d'alimentation vient s'appuyer.

FEEDING DEVICE FOR INGOT MOLDS.
In the manufacture of feeders for casting steel or other metals into ingot molds, it is difficult to obtain a structure suitable from all points of view. Feeders must be cheap and efficient to manufacture; the application to the mold must consist of a simple operation; furthermore, it should be easy to peel off the ingot, and defects in the form of cracks or impurities should be avoided. A simple and manufacturing efficient feeder is disclosed in the Swedish patent? 78715 which consists of an inner box made of sheet iron surrounded by sand or other heat insulating material.
Apart from the fact that it is not particularly inexpensive, it has among other things the disadvantage that the dry sand to be removed from the feeder when the wipe is peeled off causes the formation of harmful dust. Another drawback is the risk of sand falling into the mold if the feed device is not carefully laid. Among the drawbacks also exist the risk of formation of fines between the edges of the feed device and the mold, which fines can cause defects in the form of cracks.
Constructions which consist of feeders provided with tamped bricks or which are dammed with sand or the like together with clay or the like, often have the same disadvantages. These feeders are constructed of inexpensive materials but a great deal of work is required before and after casting.
In addition, feeders are known in which the sink tubing of the mold is provided internally with a combustible mass and a binder which sugement the consistency * of the mass, and a known insulating layer between the mass and the molten steel. These feeders have the disadvantage that the tamping is often done in the mold when it is hot.
It can also occur that impurities
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
fall into the mold during tamping.
A better method of operation is used with regard to the kind of feeding device which has in part been used and still is in use and in which fired bricks of suitable dimensions are arranged above the mold or in its upper part. . However, a kind of brick having the quality which fulfills this purpose is very expensive and this, together with the difficulty of maintaining the dimensions of the brick sufficiently precise to avoid the extrusion of the steel into the joints with defects subsequent to ingots, contributed to the fact that this feed device construction was not applied to a greater extent.
The present invention combines the advantages of the ease of application of the brick device with the low cost of the tamped devices. The disadvantage of the brick feeder is eliminated because the pieces produced in accordance with the invention do not need a firing which changes their dimensions. The inexpensive of the rammed feeder is obtained using the same starting material, but the feed device according to the invention is superior in that the work of ramming the mass is entirely eliminated. By the rationalization carried out in the production of the feeding device according to the invention on an industrial scale, the total cost price of a feeding device according to the invention is lower than that of the device. groomed in the mold.
The feed device according to the present invention is characterized in that the parts which come into contact with the ingot consist of loose plates of sand or similar material and of a binder, arranged on a rigid support. The plates thus obtained after having been dried in the air become sufficiently compact so that they can be handled without special care without being broken. Sand of the usual fineness can be used as raw material, which is mixed with an agent. binder, eg, cellulose sulphite waste liquor, and pressed into a mold on a rigid support, eg cardboard, and then allowed to dry.
The rigid support is retained by the binder and contributes to the ease of handling of the plate. The grains of sand adhere strongly enough not to come off during casting.
As the sand material, quartz sand is preferably used, but other like varieties of materials, such as pumice stone, clay and the like can be used.
The binder is preferably organic in nature and may, in addition to the sulphite liquor, consist of molasses. Bituminous products can also be used as a binder.
The rigid support on which the mixture of sand and binder is pressed may consist of a support plate of fibrous organic material such as cardboard, wood pulp, pitch or the like, but the support plate can also be. constructed of plaster, sheet iron or the like.
In the accompanying drawing, three different embodiments of supply devices according to the invention are shown. Figure 1 is a vertical section of a feed device disposed at the top of a mold and Figure 2 shows the feed device seen from above. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of a feeder in which the plates have a shape such that the part consisting of sand material and binder, thickens at the bottom in the direction of the wall of the mold. . Figure 3 is a vertical section through a conical feeder.
In the device shown in Figures 1 and 2, the reference numeral 1 denotes a mold having a rim 2 against which the dis-
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
positive feed comes to support. The feed device consists of four detached plates, of which 3 designates the part constructed of sand and binder, while 4 designates the rigid support onto which the mixture of sand and binder has been pressed. In order to prevent the plates from lifting to the surface when the device is filled with molten metal, they are fixed by means of wedges 5.
In the embodiment shown in Figure 3, the support plate 4 is leveled at its lower part 6 so that the layer of sand and binder is thicker at the edge 2 and the risk of molten metal passing through. is eliminated.
In the embodiment shown in Figure 4, the plates have a trapezoidal shape and are arranged obliquely, so that the device becomes conical. The edge 2 of the feeder is inclined, and 7 cast iron wedges hold the plates in position.
For the manufacture of feeding devices according to the invention, the following method is preferably applied:
Regular sand of appropriate fineness is mixed with 50% sulphite cellulose waste liquor so that the sand acquires a consistency suitable for pressing. The sand must not be too wet so as to stick to the pressing tool, nor too dry so that the bond between the grains becomes insufficient. A suitable quantity of sand is then scattered in the pressing mold, at the bottom of which is placed a level plate of pitch or wood pulp; this plate is impregnated with the binder on its face in contact with the layer of sand, then the pressing is carried out until the desired thickness is reached.
The two layers are then firmly attached to form a plate.
In cases where waste cellulose sulphite liquor is used as a binder, the face of the plate which comes into contact with the molten metal, is preferably covered with a thin layer of neutral material, for example graphite, to prevent sulfur to be reduced in the surface layer of the sink tubing for example during steel casting. In this case, a very thin layer of graphite is blown onto the surface after the plate has come out of the press. You can also apply talc or lime as a protective layer.
