<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

VEHICLE ON RAILS.
The present invention relates to vehicles on rails and more particularly to the means for suspending the body of such a vehicle on the bogies.
In the construction of rail vehicles and, in particular, electric and electric diesel locomotives, it is common practice to support the body of the locomotive on a central plate provided on the bogie frame. This arrangement not only serves to support the body of the locomotive, but also allows the bogie to pivot relative to the latter to allow the locomotive to turn without impact shocks. The provision of a central plate on a transverse element disposed between the side frames of the bogie limits the access of traction motors mounted on the axles especially in the case of a three-axle bogie where a traction motor is mounted on each. axle.
In addition, as in the body of the locomotive is mounted a large and heavy equipment, including diesel engines and generators, the resulting weight leads to the need for a large central plate, hence expensive machining and system. complicated lubrication. In addition, it may be desirable to provide limited transverse movement of the bogie relative to the body of the locomotive so that the bogie can follow irregularities in the track without imparting lateral movement to the locomotive. In the usual construction of the bogie, this transverse movement is provided by mounting the center plate on a separate transverse beam which, in turn, is suspended from the bogie frame by suspension bars, thus allowing limited lateral movements.

central and however allows at least one pivotal and transverse movement of the bogie relative to the body of the vehicle. In some recent locomotives, four suspension bars housed at the edges of the body of the vehicle and of the bogies, opposite the front central plates, serve to support the body of the vehicle. These suspension bars not only serve to support the weight of the latter, but must also allow sufficient flexibility to allow the longitudinal deviations of the bogies from the body of the vehicle. This freedom of movement has been achieved by providing for sliding surfaces.
However, since the pressure per unit area of these sliding surfaces must be low, the dimensions and weight of the complete suspension assemblies with the supports and the sliding surfaces must have been extremely large. It has therefore been found necessary to provide a support construction for the body of a vehicle on rails, eliminating center plates, as well as sliding surfaces.
It is therefore an object of the present invention to present a vehicle construction on rails in which the vehicle body is supported on the bogie without a central plate and without the use of sliding surfaces.
According to the invention, the body of the vehicle on rails is supported on a bogie by means of a flexible cable, one end of which is connected to the bogie frame and the other end to the vehicle body, the point of connection of the cable to the body. of the vehicle lying below the point of connection of this cable to the bogie frame in such a way that the cable constitutes a suspension element for the body of the vehicle, the flexibility of the cable allowing limited pivotal and transverse movement of the bogie with respect to the body .
In particular, a downwardly projecting element is formed on each side of the vehicle body and an outwardly projecting element is formed on each side of the bogie, with its outer end above the lower end of the projection. corresponding to the body of the vehicle and with the flexible cables as being respectively these projections, forming suspension elements.
The advantages and new features of the invention will be better understood by referring to the following description and to the accompanying drawings, given simply by way of non-limiting example and in which: FIG. 1 is a side elevational view of an improved arrangement for supporting the body of a vehicle on rails, according to the invention; - fig. 2 is a fragmentary side elevational view, partially in section, illustrating in more detail the improved construction of FIG. 1; - fig. 3 is a section taken along line 3-3 of FIG. 2.
Referring to the drawings, we see a bogie 1 having side frames 2 having two supports 3 directed downwards, formed to guide the usual bearings (not shown) for axles 4 on which are mounted wheels 5. The body 6 of the vehicle is arranged above the bogie 1 and, to support the body 6 on the bogie 1 and to allow limited pivotal and transverse movement of the bogie relative to the body, the arrangement which will now be described is provided .
A pair of protruding elements 7 and 8 are formed on each side of the body 6 of the vehicle, these elements having the lower ends 9 disposed outside and near the side frames 2 of the bogie 1. A counter-key 10 is disposed between each pair of elements 7 and 8, with its end portions 11 placed in slots 12 made in plates 13 respectively fixed to elements 7 and 8. A simple inspection of
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
fig. 3 shows that the slots 12 are made at a small angle so that the counter-key 10 is inclined inwards, as will be described in more detail below. Although not essential, the slots 12 can be closed by suitable plates.
14 fixed to the plates 13 by studs 15.
A transverse element 16 interconnects the upper surfaces of the side frames 2 of the bogie 1 and a hook element 17, extending outwardly, is fixed to each side of the bogie, its outer end 18 being disposed between the elements 7 and 8. Several flexible cables 19 steel are provided, each having one end attached to the end 18 of hook 17.
The ends of the cables 19 which are connected to the hook 17 are fixed in conical pins 20 which, in turn, are inserted into corresponding buckets of the hook 17: The slots 21, sufficiently wide to pass the cables 19, communicate with the conical buckets and, therefore, when it is desired to remove the body 6 of the bogie 1, it suffices to strike lightly on the pins 20 to make them come out of the buckets in the end 18 of the hook 17 and the cable 19 is removed by the slots 21.
Those skilled in the art will easily understand that the cables 19 serve as suspension elements with the hook 17 on the bogie 1 supporting the body 6 by means of the cables 19, the counter-key 10 and the elements 7 and 8, thus completely eliminating the conventional center plate as well as friction or sliding support surfaces.
The flexibility of the cables 19 allows the bogie to pivot and move transversely with respect to the body 6 and since no bearing surface is required, the need for lubrication is completely eliminated.
Although two elements extending downwards have been shown on the body of the vehicle and a hook on the bogie, it is obvious that this arrangement can be reversed with one element extending downwards on the body of the vehicle and two hooks with a counter-connection key on the bogie. In addition, although three cables 19 have been shown, it will be understood that only one cable of larger diameter can be used, or more than three can be provided. It can easily be seen that the point of connection of the cables 19 to the counter-key 10 is externally spaced from the point of connection of the cables with the hook 17. Consequently, the cables 19 are inclined downwards away from the bogie 1 so as to cushion any transverse swing of the body 6 of the vehicle relative to the bogie 1.
The counter-key 10 is inclined towards the inside and the extension 18 of the hook 17 is inclined towards the outside to accommodate the inclination of the cables 19.
Although only one embodiment of the invention has been described, it is obvious that one does not wish to be limited to this particular form given simply by way of example and without any restrictive character and that consequently all the variants having the same principle and the same object as the arrangements indicated above would come within the scope of the invention as they do.
