<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
EXEMPLE I.
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

IMPROVEMENTS MADE TO GAS HEATING.
The present invention relates to improvements made to gas heating. It relates in particular to the heating of the wind used in blast furnaces.
The inventor has found that when a combustible material is introduced into a wind which has already been heated to a relatively high temperature, the combustion of this additive material further raises the temperature o
The specification of English patent N 27.142 / 49, as submitted for public inspection, deals with the combustion of blast furnace gas in the blast of a blast furnace, a wind which had already been previously heated by compressions or both compression and internal combustion, using blast furnace gas.
The present invention relates to a method for superheating the wind employed in a blast furnace, this method comprising burning a fuel substantially free of ash in the wind which has been previously heated to a temperature of the order of that commonly used for the blast of a blast furnace.
It goes without saying that the proportion of combustible material burnt in the wind is calculated so as to leave in this wind a sufficient quantity of oxygen for the operation to be carried out in the blast furnace, for which the hot blast is required. .
Combustible material can be burned in a portion of the wind, with the hot products of combustion being introduced into the main mass of the wind.
According to a variant of the process ,,, when the wind is at a temperature sufficient to make the combustible material self-igniting
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
this material can be introduced, in controlled quantities, directly into the wind.
The combustible material, essentially free of ash, can advantageously consist of a gas developed during the operation of the blast furnace. According to a variant, the combustible material consists of a combustible liquid such as fuel oil, this fuel being able to be burned either in the main mass of the wind, to which it will in this case be added with a controlled flow, or in a chamber. combustion maintained at the required temperature and supplied with a wind stream drawn from the main stream.
It goes without saying that when the temperature of the wind is not sufficient to cause the spontaneous combustion of the combustible material. fuel oil, for example, when the latter is introduced into the wind, means can be provided for igniting the combustible material or for maintaining combustion.
The invention can be applied with particular advantage to the control of the temperature of the wind employed in a blast furnace; it has the advantage that the wind temperature can be quickly raised and be maintained at any desired point.
Thus, the invention comprises a method for controlling the temperature of the wind employed in a blast furnace., This method comprising burning a portion of the blast furnace gas in a portion of the blast which has been previously heated to a temperature of the order of that commonly applied in the blast of a blast furnace, and to bring the hot products of combustion to the main current of the wind. According to a variant, the temperature of the wind employed in a blast furnace can be controlled by the introduction and the combustion ,. in the wind which has been previously heated to a temperature of the order of that commonly applied to the blast of a blast furnace. a controlled amount of a combustible material, substantially free of ash.
When use is made of a liquid combustible material such as fuel oil, it can be introduced advantageously dropwise or in the form of a jet, either by gravity or under mechanical pressure. Fuel oil is self-igniting under normal blast furnace operating conditions.
It will be appreciated that when the temperature of a blast furnace wind is raised in accordance with the present invention, a part of the oxygen contained in this blast is consumed, so that it may be necessary to introduce a gas. new quantity of air or oxygen, in order to restore the required oxygen content. Despite the reduction in the oxygen content of the venta the sensible heat of the vent has increased and if more oxygen is introduced into the wind, a higher production capacity will result. in the blast furnace.
The following will be described by way of example. two operating modes relating to the application of the method according to the present invention to the control of the temperature of the wind of a blast furnace.
It goes without saying that by modifying the proportions of fuel oil or blast furnace gas in these examples, the temperature to which the wind can be brought can be modified.
EXAMPLE I.
In the case of a blast furnace consuming 400,000 cubic feet (cuba ft) of air per minute at a temperature of 600 C, the temperature was raised to 700 C by introducing into the dropper sale, a fuel oil substantially free of ash, with a flow rate of about 10 English pounds (1bs.) per minute. The fuel oil was self-igniting at the
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
temperature of the wind and its introduction into the latter took place at a sufficient distance from the nozzles, -to allow combustion 'to take place completely.
When it is desired to obtain a rise in temperature from 700 C to 800 C., it is necessary to introduce the fuel oil in a slightly larger proportion.
EXAMPLE II
In a blast furnace having the same air consumption as the furnace of Example 1, the temperature of the blast was raised from 600 C to 700 C by diverting part of the hot blast to a combustion chamber. by producing the combustion of this wind with about 2000 cubic feet of blast furnace gas per minute and by bringing the hot products of the combustion to the main mass of the vento In this case, we may be faced with the need to start the ignition of the blast furnace wind / gas mixture, which can be achieved by adding a few drops of fuel oil to this mixture.
If it is desired to raise the temperature from 700 C to 800 C. it is necessary to use a slightly higher proportion of blast furnace gas.
